The Road gets posters

Sep. 4, 2009by: Paul Tassi

There are a handful of movies to really look forward to in the few months left in the year, but THE ROAD stands tall on the top of many people's lists, mine included. The film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's apocalyptic road trip seems destined for greatness, even if I am starting hear a tinge of bad buzz flying around about it.

No new trailer (which we really could use), but I do have two posters for you. They show two camera angles of essentially the same scene, and serve to remind us that yes, Guy Pearce is in this movie as well. I think the kid (Kodi Smit-McPhee) got shafted out of having his name somewhere, even if he is pretty unknown right now.

Extra Tidbit: Don't read Variety's review like I did.

The 2nd poster is definately the best, gives joe public more of an idea what the film is about.
Its the director of the Proposition, which was a very sparse, brutal but yet brilliant film. So I think he can pull it off. Also Nick Cave is doing the soundtrack, that gets my arse in a cinema seat alone.

You know what I hate? Those stale taglines that go "Where civilization ends, the fight for survival begins." I mean what the f**k, really. Those things got old and corny and just cheesy years ago. The posters look GOOD but that tagline's a major turn off.

"When darkness falls, evil rises." "When the last angel falls, the war begins." "When the sun dies, we all die as well." I mean come on, Captain Obvious! Cheeesssyyy!

Don't believe the trailer

I know a lot of people were put off by the trailer but remember that the trailer contained action scenes from other films just to spice it up. The film has now been shown at the current Venice filmfestival and it got some very good reviews. "The Road" and not "Avatar" remains the must see film for me.

I dont know how I feel about this movie. I had no idea that it was an adaptation of anything, so when I first watched the trailer it just seemed like another one of those 'I am Legend' premises. The whole post apocalyptic journey idea is a little old school.

However, someone should have to come along and change my opinion on that. Will this movie do so?

It's a way darker and slower and brooding film than I Am Legend. The only real similarites the 2 have is that they are post-apocalyptic films. That's it. If it's been adapted well (And I think it has) than it should be a way better film than I Am Legend.

Can the book be adapted to film?

Looking at the cast list, I already know it will be quite different from the book. The book essentially has two main characters, the father and the son, and a few minor characters but that is about it. Still it would be difficult to have a movie with essentially two characters so I can't blame them. This was perhaps the most nihilistic and hopeless book I've ever read, I can't think of another book where humanity and the world in general take such a merciless pummeling. The thing is the book

The thing is the book wasn't very plot driven, it was driven in large part by McCarthy's unique, vivid prose, so I don't know if it "can" make a good movie adaption per se.

You make me want to pull a Picard and facepalm.

Looks like they copied the poster ROAD TO PERDITION. I wonder what film Esquire saw when it declared it to be one of the most powerful films not yet seen; I bet the Weinsteins fucked around with the cut and are releasing a dumbed down version.

Clips look dead-on

I am so stoked to see this! I recognized all the cips exactly from the book.

I'm actually afraid to see this movie 'cuz the book just saddened me beyond tears. The spit baby and the torso in the basement. I don't know if I can watch that.
From the clips Mortensen seems to be amazing in this role. Good luck at the Oscars to him.

Variety: The bastards probably spoiled the movie or something?

The trailer is great and it comes out the same day as Law Abiding Citizen, both films I am eagerly anticipating. Bring on October 16!

Hopefully...

...there's no baby on a spit. That wouldn't have been okay even before I was a dad.

I prefer the one from the back. (pause for "that's what she said") also I cannot wait to hear Nick Cave's score for this film.
