The Rock returns to the WWE for WrestleMania (and to promote Fast Five)

Feb. 15, 2011by: Mike Sampson

After a seven year absence, Dwayne Johnson will return to the WWE as The Rock this April as the host of WrestleMania 27. Johnson announced the move live last night at "WWE Raw" in Anaheim, California and, as you might expect, the crowd went ape shit.

The WWE has been trying to convince Johnson to make a return to the ring for years but it hasn't been easy as he makes the transition from The Rock to Dwayne Johnson. But the stars aligned for both parties as Johnson is looking to promote his next film, FAST FIVE, which opens a few weeks after WrestleMania on April 3. It also helps that FAST FIVE is released by Universal who has a stake in WWE as last night's "Raw" runs on USA Network and "Friday Night Smackdown" airs on Syfy, both NBC Universal networks.

Said Johnson The Rock in a statement, "I'm absolutely thrilled and fired up to be the host of WrestleMania...As an actor, entertainer and someone who both loves and has grown up in the sports entertainment business, the opportunity to host 75,000 passionate fans in a live venue, not to mention the millions that will be watching worldwide, is not only thrilling but quite honestly the opportunity of a lifetime. It's going to be one helluva an epic night."

A prepared statement is one thing but seeing the man in action is another. What you think of his movie aside, Johnson brings a swagger, attitude and respect that no other host could possibly bring to WrestleMania. Just take a look at the crowd reaction when they hear The Rock's classic catchphrase. As Mean Gene Okerlund might've said, "It's pandemonium!"

The Rock is great. Both the actor and wrestler, but I fear he will only do a few promos and that'll be all she wrote. His film career is his life now I think. He should be salesmen though as he almost sold me that retarded tooth fairy movie - almost.

Its an obvious shell game that vince mcmahon is pulling on us by bringing in the rock. All he will do is do a couple backstage scenes and maybe do a promo or two but thats about it. He isnt back to a long term contract and more than likely this will be no different than the dozens of other celebrities that appear on raw.

Shawn Michaels, The Rock & Trish Stratus always got me to tune in. I stopped watching after HBK's retirement last year, but now with him back for the Hall of Fame and The Rock as well, I guess I'll have to start watching until WrestleMania.

The Great One's return was VERY EPIC. Someone who even has the slightest idea of the passion of wrestling understands how awesome the video above is. After fifteen years of watching wrestling, the video above explains a great deal of why I put up with boring characters and shitty stories. The Rock's return was a LONG time coming.

Truly a happy fan again!

Me and my mother went ape shit when he came out! Too bad my brother had to work the night shift at his job but I had him on speakerphone while watching it! I can't wait till he tells John Cena to drink A NICE TALL GLASS OF MONKEY PISS!

I've been a fan of the WWF since Bob Backlund was champ. Wrestling has and always will be a soap opera for guys. And if The Rock still makes the occasional appearance, I'll definitely be watching.

This is why I watch WWE!

I have avidly watched WWE since 1999, that's eleven effin' years, and these are the moments that keep the fan in me coming back for more. Call it scripted, call it oily men fighting in trunks, call it repetitive, call it fake, call it whatever the hell you want, but I call it complete and 100% Awesomeness! Just when you thought WWE's PG youth movement devoured the best of the company, in steps The Rock and man, oh man, am I pumped like I haven't been in ages. Finally, baby, The Rock has come

That's some awesome shit right there.

I haven't watched wrestling for about 10 years but I'm 90% sure he just took a dump on every asshole that tried to replace him in that time. The WWE is full of bland, characterless douchebags now.

This is hilarious!

Horrendous acting, cheesy lines, some bullshit about "kicking ass". I mean, it was fun when I was about 9, but come on... tanned, oiled men, pretending to fight really don't get me excited... Get back on a movie set Dwayne, cause Faster wasn't that bad and Fast Five looks pretty decent

Well this is different. You're talking about a movie (I think), which is supposed to sink you into a different world with it's story arc, cinematography that focuses only on that particular world and compelling characters, which, believe me, seem more real than these wrestling personas. Wrestling is more like hammy theatre, with mentally handicapped children as actors and a ten year old writing the dialogue.

I've been on the fence about whether to quit watching WWE for a while. I'm just not into the youth movement and the PG era that's going on right now. And I've said that I'm done when certain guys like Triple H and Undertaker hang up the boots for good. But last night Vince McMahon did the right choice by bringing in The Rock as WrestleMania Host. For my money, no other man (including Hulk Hogan) can get the crowd amped like only the Great One can! Congrats Vince! You just got another

I haven't watched wrestling in years....

...but for the numerous years that I WAS a wrasslin' fan, I ALWAYS hated The Rock. From the Nation of Domination to the Corporation to him just being a fucking annoying schmuck, he always pissed me off.

Now, as an actor, he has a lot of potential, but he keeps picking shitty projects and unless he starts actually committing to trying as an actor, I'm gonna hate him in this field as well.

Step ya game up, Rocky!
