The Russos explain who will be getting the spotlight in Infinity War

01.12.2016

There's going to have to be some changes on the horizon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, don't you think? After all, Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man can't always be at the forefront of the action as the MCU heads on into the future. The same can be said for Chris Evans' Captain America. At some point along the way, those who built the foundation for the MCU to exist are going to have to step aside and let new, fresher, less explored characters have their moments in the spotlight if the Marvel brand is going to keep expanding and flourishing.

The Russo brothers seem fully aware of that as they start building the groundwork for the two-part INFINITY WAR. In fact, they said as much during a Q&A over the weekend at Wizard World New Orleans when they were asked which smaller pieces in the MCU will become bigger pieces through Phase Three.

Everything is finite, right? Nothing can last forever. It's cyclical. Some New Avengers in Phase Four are going to become prominent and then maybe some Avengers might not be around anymore. So, we'll see how all this plays out but you have to treat every character with respect. I think it's interesting that if you've seen four or five movies with the lead character having an arc, I want to see some story telling from some of the secondary characters. We're focusing on that right now with INFINITY WAR while we're breaking into those movies, is which characters can we pull to the forefront who potentially haven't had their own 'A' story arc to this point. I think you'll see that the supporting Avengers are going to become primary Avengers.

Who's getting promoted as Thanos comes to town with the Infinity Gauntlet? Place your bets on the superhero being groomed for more responsibility. I'm guessing the Falcon. Your pick...

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART 1 arrives in theaters on May 4, 2018, while PART 2 will conclude that particular battle on May 3, 2019.

Right now, officially, the Avengers are Captain America, War Machine, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Falcon, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow and Hawkeye. Phase 4 could introduce Ms. Marvel, She Hulk, Quasar and Nova. Or not. They could also introduce some characters from TV such as Mockingbird and Quake or Hellcat, Power Man and Iron Fist. Eventually characters will have to be replaced because the actors will get too old and that's when we might see Stature or White Tiger or Miss America or Kate Bishop.

The problem, of course, is that the new characters that Marvel have been introducing lately have a tendency to be female, which is okay but Marvel might want to introduce different characters for the movies because too many actresses in spandex and you have what looks like an Avengers porn parody. One thing they could do is reveal that Tony Stark has an illegitimate son who then takes on the mantle of Iron Man. Corny, yes, but not as bad as Iron Man II.

Sif could be recast as another actress and take Thor's place in the Avengers so that Chris Hemsworth can take on the role of Thor, king of Asgard. And the Vision can always be destroyed, rebuilt and played by a different actor. I doubt if we will ever get a Miles Morales Spider-Man but we might get a Miles Morales Scarlet Spider, say for example a Miles Morales wearing the Iron Spider costume from the Civil War series.

Spider Woman and Moon Knight could also be introduced on TV (either on ABC or Netflix) and then make the move to the movies. Oh and don't forget that someone like Sharon Carter could conceivably pick up the hammer of Thor and call herself Valkyrie. Have I forgotten any major characters they could introduce or promote to Avenger status?

I'd argue the core of the current Avengers are Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. Say what you will about each of those characters, but they're the only characters with 2 or more solo outings. And in said solo outings, they've spent more time building out the rest of the MCU and moving the plot towards The Infinity Wars story.

I know a lot of people are fans of Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Hulk. But since there storylines really only exist within the above 3's solo movies or the Avengers

I know a lot of people are fans of Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Hulk. But since there storylines really only exist within the above 3's solo movies or the Avengers movies, I don't really count them as the core of the MCU. They're more the staples of the MCU. If the above 3 are the heart of the MCU, then these characters are the lungs.

So after Infinity War, I'd imagine Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Hulk to still be around. But in terms of the core characters, my guess is Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel will be built up as the core of the MCU. Since all three characters are wildly different in what they would deal with, my guess is Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk and Falcon will serve as the glue that ties it all together.

You'll notice I left out Ant-Man, I just don't think he'll become a core character. He'll remain in MCU and part of the Avengers. But he'll always be that character on the outskirts - involved when they need them, but otherwise doing his own thing on a smaller scale.

My thoughts exactly... Marvel needs to hang their hat on a franchise and if Iron Man or Caps is out, they need star power. Not only that, but potential sequels to broaden the Universe for years to come.

I'll go way out on a limb with my guess and say that it'll be Spider-man that takes over as the focal character...cause, no one expects it!

All depends what Marvel and Disney wants to do. I feel they'll break off the Avengers into two separate groups. I doubt they'll kill off RDJ, since he'll be instrumental in the Infinity War. I can see either Cap or Falcon dying, but who knows, they've only killed off one character so far.

I would have loved a Netflix miniseries with the current Avengers.

Cap Widow Falcon Warmachine Vision Witch + throw in Ant-Man, sure. Even just four episodes to prepare us for Civil War. What are these guys up to? How do they get along?

I'm guessing Marvel doesn't want to re-negotiate Robert Downey, Jr. and possibly the entire Avengers gang so they want to kill off the entire team? Could be.

It'll be interesting to see who makes it out alive leading up to Infinity Wars and during Infinity Wars. If and when Cap dies, I do hope it's Bucky who dons the Reds, white, and blue and not Falcon considering the bond between Steve and Bucky is more personal and historic than the bond Steve and Sam Wilson have.

I am very intrigued and excited in when the Guardians of the Galaxy will arrive and what their overall role will be in the two films; obviously there will be an Adam Warlock

Well Adam Warlock is infinity gauntlet (which is really the story they are doing since Magus was the villain in infinity war and thanos was on the heroes side) so he should be in the spotlight.

I'm not sure how this will all play out. Reminds me of a tv show that goes on too long, with a lot of the cast from the earlier seasons that people like getting replaced with characters people don't care about as much, just to keep the show going. I look forward to phase 3, but not sure about phase 4. The way the MCU is set up, you can't really just reboot one character without doing all of them since the stories are connected.

If Cap doesn't die in Civil War, which I expect, then he'll die early on in Part1 of Infinity. Either Bucky or Falcon will pick up the mantle for a short time, only for cap to return via the gems in Part 2. It should be Bucky to pick up the mantle of Cap, but due to the diversity pc movement his time as cap will probably be ignored so they can skip right to falcon so they can have a black Cap. Iron Man and Downey still have gas in the can. I mean he is basically a guy in a robotic suit that does everything for him. As long as his mind is still 100%, Stark is a force not to be underestimated. The problem in my mind is going to be Thor. The guy isn't supposed to noticeably age in a human's lifetime. So in 10-15 years he's gonna be looking a lot older and not be able to be in earth based stories. They could have him do solely Asgard based stories centuries in the future.

I dunno about your Thor theory. I think Hemsworth knows he's not the greatest actor on the planet and his physique is hugely important to his success, and will do everything he can to maintain it. I mean, Hugh Jackman has been Wolverine for nearly two decades, and he's not technically supposed to age either.

Falcon

... what a boring character. The only thing I can tell you about Falcon is that he has metal wings and I think Captain America probably knows him.

There is nothing at all interesting about Falcon... except his wings I guess would be fun to have in real life.

Could not agree more. There is literally nothing special about him other than Mackie being so great in the role. They should take a cue from South Park and rename him Token.

Wild stab in the dark here but I predict the two parter will end with everyone alive and well with the villain vanquished...

I like these films but the threat level is akin to a Power Rangers episode.

Yeah because nobody died in the last Avengers movie and Cap America isn't dying in Civil War... Your assessment is invalid.

Yeah, a new character who was introduced an hour and a half earlier was killed, but Cap is definitely not dying in Civil War. Yes, I've read the comics and know what happens. But Chris Evans has already blocked off 9 months of his schedule to shoot Infinity War back to back. I still disagree with JCLuthor though, at least one or two people are done after Infinity War, quite possibly Cap

Marvel killed off Coulson in The Avengers... and then didn't.

But then they killed off Nick Fury, Bucky, and Captain America in Winter Soldier... and then didn't.

At least they committed to killing off Quicksilver. A character that they have rights to from some strange loophole and was done better in another movie.

If they had the balls, they would kill off Spiderman. Now THAT would be an impressive move.
