The Scarface remake is fine with Al Pacino, "It's what we do" he says

03.19.2015

While I hardly consider SCARFACE to be my favourite gangster film (that would be GOODFELLAS) I can appreciate its place in film history and its impact on the genre. So when news broke yesterday of the proposed SCARFACE remake taking a step closer to reality, I was left wondering…why?

One person who actually seems to be on board with the idea of a remake is Al Pacino himself. At the New York premiere of his new film, DANNY COLLINS, The Hollywood Reporter asked Pacino what he thought of this potential remake of one of his biggest films:

Oh, it’s fine. It's part of what we do. We remake things.

Not that he needed to give his approval but I’m sure screenwriter Jonathan Herman will breathe a little easier as he moves forward with the remake’s script. Pacino is right of course, the remake is an undeniable part of human culture whether we like it or not. In fact Pacino is about to join the remake crowd himself as he followed up THR's question by saying that "I may remake a movie I saw recently, I can't say what it is. It's about 50 years old.” That would place the original film somewhere in the mid-60’s. Any guesses what it could be?

Seeing as how SCARFACE isn’t quite as dear to me as it is to others, I’m fairly ambivalent about this remake. I hope that it’s at least different enough to justify remaking it. When a remake ends up being almost identical to its predecessor aside from a modern setting I find myself getting bored. I’ve already seen this movie, why would I want to see it again? If you’re going to remake something please try to do something different and give me a reason to see it. Len Wiseman’s TOTAL RECALL may not have been totally successful but I can at least give it a bit of respect for not just retreading what was done before (and better) in Paul Verhoeven’s original.

The SCARFACE remake is slated to be directed by Pablo Larrain.

In your opinion, what are some of the best remakes out there?

The new Scarface should be Canadian and therefore very, very polite and friendly to everyone he does business with.

You do realize Scarface is also a remake? Do a little research before you post.

Scarface is not a gangster film.. Drug dealers aren't gangsters. Gangbangers are not real gangsters.

How is Scarface not a gangster movie? How are drug kingpins not gangsters? Gangbangers call themselves gangsters. I think you should tell them that's wrong.

My biggest concern is that due to the iconic nature of the '83 movie, the new one will (fairly or not) get lambasted for treading the same territory. I think the drug-of-choice should definitely be changed. Cocaine can feature, but there's no way they can outdo what the original remake did with it, so pick something else. I'm betting the new Tony will be Mexican or otherwise from Central America. Stone got some mileage out of placing the events after the Mariel boatlift. With Mexican-American

With Mexican-American issues like they are, I think that's the smartest angle to play. Or he could be from the Orient.

I'd say do the same thing Stone's Scarface did with the original. Just make it different. Keep the same elements and themes but make it new again. It doesn't have to be the same exact story with the same exact plot. It needn't even be an homage. I'm on board with what a lot of other Schmoes have said. It can be a Russian immigrant, Korean, Chinese, Samoan. Who cares. But I can get behind the idea. It sounds fun if taken seriously and not just shat out for the soul purpose of profiting or

People forget this was a remake itself, and the original film was based on a book, and the book was based on Al Capone... I really think if there's any movie that I'm fine with being remade, it's Scarface, as it's really about the rise and fall of a gangster in search of the American Dream, which are themes that aren't gonna go out of style anytime soon. New vices, new settings, same themes...I'm totally okay with this.

To be fair, Tony Montana himself would be all about a remake as well...as long as he got his cut. :P

I get that its a remake of a remake, and people have mixed feelings on Pacino's portrayal, but f**k, who wants to tackle such an iconic role
