The script for Star Wars: The Force Awakens made John Boyega cry

09.23.2015

I'd cry too if I'd just nabbed the lead role in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, which is exactly what happened to John Boyega once he was cast in the role of Finn and received the script for the new film. A preview of John Boyega's upcoming GQ interview has popped up online in which Boyega lays out the exhausting seven-month audition process which felt like "The X Factor but without the TV show around it," but it was all worth it in the end once Boyega won the role and let the waterworks flow:

When I read the script I cried, and I'm not really a big crier... I'm more like a frog-in-the- throat kind of guy, who'll try to hold it in and make sure I don't let it all out.

In just a few short months we'll be introduced to a whole new generation of Star Wars characters, of which John Boyega's Finn and Daisy Ridley's Rey will be at the forefront. As with the original trilogy, everyone will latch onto their favourite characters and although Boyega may be biased, he believes that Finn is the best character in the film.

Finn is dope. His story is so epic. It's a story that's never been seen before, but it also mirrors the stories of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. And he's quirky and charismatic and funny. For me, he was the best character in the script.

Only a special few ever get to wield a lightsaber in a Star Wars film, and we already know that John Boyega can count himself among them thanks to the most recent STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS teaser; however, it did involve some training, but not the kind you're thinking of.

They're heavy, those things, and there's a lot of running involved. I was trained on a high incline treadmill so when it came to it I could sprint around the desert in a leather jacket. They should do a Star Wars weight loss program.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS will hit theaters (finally) on December 18, 2015.

Why? The way the Internet is salivating, Disney doesn't need to release a trailer for this movie. It's STAR WARS, the original leads are back, we have practical effects, there are a few new characters - most people are already saying, "Take my money now!"

Star Wars Rebels premiers on the 14th, the Force Awakens tickets go on sale October 19th. I believe that is our Trailer #3 window. I'm thinking Thursday or Friday that week.

I'd cry too if I got handed a golden ticket to Hollywood's A list

I really like John Boyega as an actor; he blew me away in ATTACK THE BLOCK. If he plays his cards right, I can see him developing a similar career arc as Denzel Washington. They have a very similar vibe, and I'm not just talking about skin colour.

I know nothing about Boyega, but he looks enough the part to me. My concerns lies primarily with the writing.

Between the contributions of Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK) and Michael Arndt (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, TOY STORY 3), I think we're okay there, too.

You make a good point. Lawrence Kasdan has been a good screen writer.

I have a bad feeling about this.

"It's a story that's never been seen before, but it also mirrors the stories of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo."

This is one of the thing that worries me. That Disney is so obsessed with making a politically correct version of Star Wars spectacular, that they're going try to make both Boyega's and Ridley's characters everything to everyone. They're going to be Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo, and Princess Leia, and Ben Kenobi, and Darth Vader, and this, and that, and the other thing too.

Rather than just sticking to mythological based archetypes that have worked so well.

Once again with the negativity - I hate to correct you tho but how is Disney being obsessed with PC when they've done the first Star Wars film with a leading black male and they have a female lead stormtrooper in Gwendaline Christie. You speak so much utter shit your breathe must smell awful. The film can pay homage to its roots without being PC

Life oftentimes has negativity. Everything is not rainbows and unicorn farts. And it's possible to make calm and rational negative comments without blowing midi-chlorian vessels. They need to start teaching the special snowflake generation this reality, and how to deal with negative criticism so they don't fall to pieces every time they read any.

@OptimusPrime Boyega looks the part as far as I'm concerned and is not a primary issue. The film could pay homage to its roots without being PC, but that's not the case when it starts getting involved with tiresome and formulaic "equal representation" issues. That's when PC starts to take precedent over story, and becomes art by committee which is always bad.

If we take a look at the Captain Phasma character, Gwendolyne looks the part as far as a female warrior is concerned. But would an evil empire, or a first order trying to be an evil empire, concern itself over equal representation. Sure the Nazis had women, but they were primarily secretaries in administration.

Daisy's character elicits the most concern in me though. Every image of her we see her gritting her teeth which to me suggests over acting, and trying a bit too hard to show that she can be a man too, even though I don't think we've ever seen Luke or Han grit their teeth this much. She brings a staff to a blaster fight, which I''m guessing she's going to use to trip up stormtroopers and all manner of female empowerment nonsense. Look at her arms, there's more meat on a BW3 chicken wing. What possible damage could she do to anyone with that thing? Give the girl a blaster for gosh sakes so she can defend herself.

Now, let's try to cool it on the unnecessary expletives, kiddies.

'Profanity is the effort of a feeble brain to express itself forcibly.'

I think Moat Man makes valid points. I remember how people were psyched to see the Phantom Menace and we all know how that turned out.

This sounds great, I got to imagine though Luke or Han dies if it made him cry. Damn
