The Tale of the Body Thief brings Lestat back to cinemas

Feb. 8, 2012by:

Body Thief coverINTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE is a sexy movie that drips with Southern Gothic. And that's all I remember about it really, though I'd say that it's better than most vampire movies. The cinematic sequel QUEEN OF THE DAMNED was awful though, which is perhaps why none of Anne Rice's novels involving vampires have been adapted since.

But that all may be about to change, as Imagine Entertainment (run by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard) has optioned the rights to the fourth novel in Anne Rice's series about Lestat, with further producing duties to be handled by Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman (STAR TREK, TRANSFORMERS). The adaptation will be done by a newer writer named Lee Paterson, who is behind an unproduced script called SNATCHED that is relatively well-regarded.

Here's a basic plot summation for you according to The Hollywood Reporter: "The hook of the Body Thief is that the story concerns body-switching. Lestat, depressed and lonely after centuries as a vampire, decides to transfer souls for a day with a psychic, who after the transfer reveals that he has no intention of switching back. Lestat, now in a human body and with the help of some friends, must track down the man and get his body back."

I must be missing something here, because I was never under the impression that body-switching has ever been much more than a passably engaging plot device.  Anybody out there read the book and have an insight as to what makes it so engrossing? Or is the studio just trying to cash in on the (not at all) smashing success of THE CHANGE-UP?

Extra Tidbit: Anne Rice has gone on record saying she favors Robert Downey Jr. to play Lestat - who would be your pick and why?

Now you're talking

I read every book of the Vampire Chronicles. Loved Interview movie, thought Queen was semi-gay and so was Townsend. You now have an opportunity to redeem yourself w Body Thief. DON'T F..K IT UP! Memnoch might be a good one too.

About Time!

It is about time they try to redeem themselves with putting a good follow up to Interview. I hope they do not mess this one up because Interview was great and these tales must be told with the same passion as Interview was. Also I do agree as well they should start off with Vampire Lestat. **SPOILER ALERT** It will be nice to see Brad Pitt as Louie in a cameo at the end when he saves Lestat by driving a porsch to his rescue with Lestat's mother. It will be like Brad handing it off to a worthy

As to this : "I must be missing something here, because I was never under the impression that body-switching has ever been much more than a passably engaging plot device. "

Minor Spoiler below...

The big draw is that Lestat, removed from his effectively indestructable body (even the Sun only "tans" him after Queen of the Damned) has to hunt himself down in an effectively powerless human body. It's really a very good twist on the body switching theme.

Okay, fair play - that does indeed sound more interesting. Also a nice little twist on the story element of "vampire hunting," as the hunter is not seeking to kill that which he is hunting.

You know, they're rebooting everything these days, so why not just reboot the whole series and do the books in order with one cast?

I like this idea too. I was skeptical about Cruise and Pitt when first cast (I'd have switched their roles), but it turned out to be pretty good. But I'm not sure what A-list actors, of the right age and looks, exist to take these roles on.

Well, they've all been done so happenstance and it's just stupid. Just do them all in order one a year.

I pretty much agree with this but I feel that they ought to start with The Vampire Lestat which is a prequel anyway.

Without Neil Jordan, there's no way to have any subsequent sequels feel like they're part of the same franchise, so they're better off just starting over.

I agree that they should do The Vampire Lestat as a prequel/backdoor reboot.

a few thinsg

Where did you get that crappy, adult novel looking cover from and why did you use it, haah. Second, in the right hands, any of the Anne Rice novels, good and bad, would be amazing movies. They just cannot be tamed down and played safe for audiences.

Stuart Townsend played Lestat the last time around. He was a descent Lestat in a horrible movie. I agree with Aviticus, they should make the Vampire Lestat film instead.

Love Anne Rice

but Tale of the Body Thief is a pretty weak novel, I would prefer if they did The Vampire Lestat, because his story was pretty badly butchered in Queen of the Damned
