The teaser trailer for The Lone Ranger with Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp is here!

10.03.2012

The wait is over and we can now get a feel for what $250 million looks like onscreen, as the teaser trailer for THE LONE RANGER has arrived.  The Jerry Bruckheimer produced film is a slight reinvention of the classic character, who first appeared in a 1933 radio show.  Since that time, the character has undergone numerous adaptations, including TV, film, and animation.  Now, director Gore Verbinski (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) along stars Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto, are bringing the long-standing character back into the limelight.  The only question is; will people want to see a western fable on the big screen again?

I'm a big fan of Verbinski's aesthetic.  Say what you will about the PIRATES franchise, but it had style, wit, and charm, which kind of encompasses Verbinksi's forte.  This first teaser definitely has those attributes, from the detailed slow-motion shots, massive sets, and colorful characters; he's right at home.  There is very little dialogue or straight-up narrative to the trailer, which is as it should be since it's only a teaser.  But, that's a teaser done right, in my opinion.

Check it out, kemosabe:

I had always planned on checking this out just for the talent involved, but this amps up my anticipation that much more.  I love Verbinski's style, plain and simple, and this looks to be slightly more serious in tone than his last three ventures to the CARIBBEAN.  Summer 2013 is going to be chock full of superheroes and sci-fi, so I think there will be plenty of room at the crowded table for a western fable.

THE LONE RANGER, starring Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Helena Bonham Carter, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper and Ruth Wilson, thunders into theaters on July 3, 2013.

It looks nice! I just hope it doesn't turn into a Wild Wild West piece of crap! ..I mainly get that vibe from the horrible music that doesn't fit this in any way or form!!!

Looks fun and dark...

I just can't believe Depp and Carter are in a movie together that's NOT directed by Tim Burton.

Props for not throwing in any obvious steampunk graphics. Verbinski has proven he knows his way around the western genre, even if The Lone Ranger has traditionally been more clean-cut than the spaghetti westerns homaged on Rango. Johnny Depp does feel too big for his part, though I kind of dig his get-up. Why they feel the need to always include a rock score in westerns (except True Grit) I may never get.

But what I probably like most is the Bruckheimer logo.

Tom Wilkinson really classed that trailer up several notches. Verbinski knows how to make a pretty picture, that's for sure.

jury is still out (for me)

It's piqued my interest, and shows, at least for a few moments of the film, that Depp is not going to be the comic relief of the film. That's my biggest fear - that this was a genre-swapping retread of Depp chewing the scenery as a captivating buffoon (I say that as a compliment to his acting in PotC).

What this trailer can't help assuage is my concern that this is will be a meandering effects-laden train-wreck of a plot (yes, I went there.) I looks good, but I'll want to have enough of a

What this trailer can't help assuage is my concern that this is will be a meandering effects-laden train-wreck of a plot (yes, I went there.) I looks good, but I'll want to have enough of a plot to escape the nonsense gravity-field that so many of these movies have, where the entire story is just a macguffin to move the characters from one action set-piece to the next. By all means, thumbs-down away for my not instantaneously becoming engorged upon watching this.

Meh

This looks kinda "meh". The music on the trailer took me out of the Western setting. Nothing in the trailer made this feel special in any way.

Much better

Wow, that looks much better than I was expecting. I have to wonder if cutting the budget actually helped this film more than it hurt it. I dont know the figures, but Pirates 2 and 3 were just "too much" effects-wise, so maybe that lower budget brought this film back down to earth. Looks like fun

$250mil? hahahaha. This looks interesting enough but it sure as hell won't break even. Looks like another John Carter to me. Of course this is all my opinion and only time will tell if I'm wrong or right. A lot of box office flops are able to recuperate their money from overseas. I don't see this movie being able to do that. No one other than Americans really give a crap about cowboys and Indians. The Lone Ranger is not internationally known. Also, westerns in general don't translate well (box

Also, westerns in general don't translate well (box office wise) in China or Russia, where most of the money outside the US comes from.
