The trailer for All Is Lost showcases Robert Redford as the most badass 76 year old on Earth

Aug. 1, 2013by:

You know that Robert Redford is a badass, right? I mean, this is the man who played The Sundance Kid, Jeremiah Johnson, Johnny Hooker, and Jay Gatsby before embarking on one hell of a directorial career. Plus, he invented the damn Sundance Film Festival! Most his age would be content to sit back and reflect on their careers, but not Redford. While still working both in front and behind the camera, Redford is already filming a role in next year's CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. How do you prep for a role that intense? How about taking on a near silent performance that requires you to man a boat lost at sea by yourself?

J.C. Chandor (MARGIN CALL) teamed up with Redford on ALL IS LOST, the thrilling drama of a man lost at sea. But, as you can tell from this new trailer, this is not CAST AWAY. There are no volleyballs or happy endings on display here but rather a gripping story of survival against the elements.

Academy Award winner Robert Redford stars in All Is Lost, an open-water thriller about one man's battle for survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. Written and directed by Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) with a musical score by Alex Ebert (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros), the film is a gripping, visceral and powerfully moving tribute to ingenuity and resilience. Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man (Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner's intuition, and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest.

Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

I can honestly say that this is the type of movie that hinges on your lead actor and having someone at Redford's age do what he does in this film is impressive to say the least. Redford got a standing ovation when the film premiered at Cannes this year and looks poised for major consideration come awards season. Chandor may be recognized as well. Not many directors can impress as much as he has with MARGIN CALL and now this.

ALL IS LOST will open in theaters October 18, 2013.

Showed way too much

I got the point about 40 seconds in. Then it started spoiling itself. But still, -looks wonderful.

Damn, I'm thoroughly impressed by that. What a great fucking trailer. Love the cinematography, and the casting is perfect because Robert Redford is the kind of actor I can easily spend two hours with. Also I won't be seeing this in a movie theater, you know how people (i.e. teenagers) get when there's a lot of silence in a movie.

Trailer gives away A LOT!!

Just warning ya. You'll be fine if you stop at the 1 minute mark.

Also, I hope I look that good when I'm 76.
