The trailer for I, Frankenstein starring Aaron Eckhart beats its way online

Oct. 4, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The first trailer for I, FRANKENSTEIN starring Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski, Jai Courtney, Miranda Otto, and Kevin Grevioux has smashed its way online. Directed by Stuart Beattie in his first major studio release as director (he wrote COLLATERAL, AUSTRALIA, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, etc.), the film is an adaptation of the comic book from Darkstorm studios, which features Frankenstein's monster as a sort of modern day supernatural superhero.

Take a look:

Here's the synopsis:

Frankenstein's creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.

It looks like a hybrid between VAN HELSING and MAX PAYNE, two films that had style and starpower, but neither of which delivered beyond that. I'm a big fan of Eckhart's and feel that he's perfectly suited for this type of material, although I'd like to see him tackle something in the mainstream realm of comics (coughDareDevilcough). I won't knock it outright, but the odds are this will be a pretty cheesy CGI monster mash (pun most definitely intended), but if it proves to be more, I'm totally game.

I, FRANKENSTEIN hits theaters on January 24, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: What comic book character do you think Eckhart would fit best after this?

Im game for this. I had previously thought this was just another boring usage of the same tired Frankenstein formula until I saw this trailer. This time it seems to be a sort of different with Frankenstein being the loner caught in the war between two sides. Its too early to tell if this will be a bomb or sleeper but at least there will be something interesting to see during the dry month of January after the hobbit has run its course.

Considering Hollywood hasn't made a great, faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel, maybe they shouldn't waste their money on projects like this. Aaron would make a wonderful creature in a legit adaption...just give him long black hair and the see through skin and we could finally see the monster Mary envisioned that apparently Hollywood is too stupid to show us.

Strahovski could sit still on a couch for 2 hours, with the camera pointed at her, and i would still consider it a great movie....

I think the explanation in this film is that the monster saw himself as Victor Frankenstein's son, and took on the name "Adam Frankenstein".

It looks Priest-y and Legion-y and Underworld-y and January-y. It also looks like, just as with the Total Recall remake, they probably won't be making the best use of the talented Bill Nighy. But I do like the idea of the wings transforming into the cape just like Deej does.

Beattie also directed the Australian movie "Tomorrow, When the War Began", based on the book series. It's actually a much better Red Dawn remake than the actual Red Dawn remake.

Still think its a really cool premise but this doesn't look anywhere near as good as it could have been. Had the potential to be the next underworld but it will most likely suck (oh and a monster Frankenstein would be 10 times more badass than the stereotypical action hero In this version).

Either way, I want to movie to make a billion dollars just so Aaron Eckhart can better movies to headline and show the world.

Staying neutral...

The response this time last year to Hansel and Gretel seemed almost the same as this and that film turned out to be a success as well as a fun ride. This is definitely taking itself a tad too seriously which is where things feel off but you never know. It could be cool. Would love to see Eckhart get a project that really propels him to major A list status where he belongs.

This looks pretty dumb

I don't know how else to say it? There's just too much cliche' in that trailer to give it a fair shake. Not to mention but it just seems too busy. I think a great Frankenstein's CREATURE as immortal superhero could have been a great movie with a more focused, and simple plot. But all this [link] clans business just feels off and forced - it doesn't fit or work! Yeah, I'll pass.

If it didn't take itself so seriously it could've been quite entertaining in the vein of Solomon Kane.

Also, except for the multitude of scars he looks nothing like the monster of Frankenstein.

Yeah, I had a bad feeling about this one. Really too bad, since I do like Aaron Eckhart (and wouldn't have been opposed to him playing the monster in a straight adaptation). Overly-stylized supernatural action movies are the forte of January releases. Anyway, I prefer Eckhart a little lighter (even Harvey Dent had a sense of humor).

As a guy in visual effects, I'm loving the shit out of that wins-to-cape animation. Just my random two-cents.

EDIT: wait, why am I being downvoted? I'm not saying anything in regards to the movie- just simply the visual effects of that one animation, lol...

How do movies like this get the greenlight?

This looks literally like Underworld and Van Helsing (as many others have said), but I was expecting something more serious in tone--especially given Eckahrd is starring. Oh well.

Looks like a mix between Underworld and Van Helsing, with Yvonne Strahovski and Aaron Eckahrdt instead of Kate Beckinsale and Hugh Jackman. I don't know, I expected it to be more different.
