The trailer for The Secret in Their Eyes proves some movies can be remade

06.30.2015

Back in 2010, director Juan J Campanella won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film for THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES. The Argentinean thriller was a powerful drama about murder and revenge. It was one of the best movies of the year which means an English language remake was practically guaranteed. We are all apprehensive any time we heard the words remake or reboot these days, but there are still some decent films that have been interpreted a second time. THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES looks like one of the ones worth your time.

Starring a stellar cast led by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julia Roberts, and Nicole Kidman, the new THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES comes from writer/director Billy Ray. Ray, best known for scripting THE HUNGER GAMES and CAPTAIN PHILLIPS recently, looks like he is not taking any of the edge or darkness out of the film.

A tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators - Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) - is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess's teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered.

Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he's certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team.  No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.

Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?

It has been a long time since I said a movie starring Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman was a must see, but THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES looks very faithful to the original movie with some damn fine performances from all involved. Chiwetel Ejiofor is turning into one of my favorite actors and it is nice to see him getting lead roles like this. I just hope that the movie lives up to this excellent first trailer.

THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES also stars House of Cards' Michael Kelly and Breaking Bad's Dean Norris. It opens in theaters on October 23rd.

Its actually impressive how unoriginal and dull this trailer make the film look, while the Argentinean original was such a solid and interesting flick.

Looks solid to me. Never even heard of the original. I do, however, want to check it out now. That this is a remake doesn't bother me as the trailer was impressive enough. Of course, as expected, it's been Hollywoodized. But I also thought that Prisoners looked like crap from the trailers, and that ended up being one of my favorite films of the year.

I'm not getting how they are 'faithful to the original movie'. I read the Wikipedia synopsis of the Argentinian film and it doesn't seem to be all that similar to what the remake trailers show. Can anybody explain?

Well let's see an American remake of an award winning foreign film, yep it's gonna suck. Man Julia Roberts is looking pretty old now though, used to have such a crush.

The brief shot of the camera hovering toward a football stadium gives the impression that they might've also copied the (very cool but technically lacking) soccer stadium shot. At least that's something to look forward to. Who knows, maybe they even went one up and actually did it in 1 take, though I doubt it.

The most common pattern in remakes of foreign movies is to copy whatever technical achievement they had, specially shots. OLDBOY is another example,

I appreciate the sentiment, Vits, I really do. When I hear about a beloved (foreign) film getting the (US) remake treatment, I can get pretty pissed off too. But lately I've learned to just let it go. If it's bad, it'll be forgotten in no time, if it's good, all the better for it. The original will always remain just that; original.

And jubei4000, you are officially the only person I know (though I don't know you at all of course) who likes the Oldboy remake. That is, if you weren't being

And jubei4000, you are officially the only person I know (though I don't know you at all of course) who likes the Oldboy remake. That is, if you weren't being sarcastic. I recently rewatched the original and was slightly, and sadly, underwhelmed, then I watched the remake several weeks later and was incredibly surprised. Not only does it match the weirdness and violence, which is super fucking rare in a US remake, but it even exceeds it in places (the footballers beatdown). The only disappointing aspect was that it was generally way too similar and the ending dragged, just like in the original.

This looks melodramatic and over the top where the original was subtle and relatable. Julia Roberts especially looks to be overacting, and the whole thing reeks of Hollywood. Uh-uh.

I've hated this idea from Day 1 and this doesn't change my mind. They've completely missed the point of the fucking amazing original film and made it into some crappy revenge movie.

"THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES looks very faithful to the original movie [...]" Why are you saying that like it's a good thing? That applies to adaptations; remakes have to be different or else they'll be unnecessary. Now, remakes of foreign movies have a better chance of being good than remakes of old movies of the same country because the filmmakers will have to adapt some elements to a new culture. Paradoxically, the reason why foreign movies are remade is usually because they're international hits, and if they're international hits, it's because they have universal stories that aren't tied to the country they were made in. Part of the story of THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES was related to the Argentinian dictatorship, but overall, it had a universal story.

Bottom line: This remake is pointless.
