The Trilogy Meter

02.18.2009
The movie trilogy is an odd thing. So many are near and dear to our hearts, and we get movie boners at the mere mention of THE GODFATHER trilogy or the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy--keep in mind I'm only scratching the surface. The odd part is, that rarely, if at all, do the sequels measure up to the first film in the trilogy. There have been so many stinkers to conclude a trilogy, it pains me to even begin going through the rolodex (damn you Wachowski Bros.) And yet, eventhough the painful memories outnumber the pleasant ones, I'm still a sucker for the trilogy. So is a fellow by the name of Danmeth, who has compiled "The Trilogy Meter"; a simple and accurate barometer of trilogies and their comparative success from film to film. Check it out below and let the debate begin!

Extra Tidbit: What's your favorite trilogy?

According to that chart, there have been an equal number of trilogies where the second is best as there are trilogies where the first is.

If you count LotR's three-way tie into the 'second', because of its anomalous status, then you actually end up with a majority. Which seems to indicate that we as the movie-going public have an unwarranted bias against sequels.

Even Dan Burma up there, who POSTED the damn chart, claims that, "The odd part is, that rarely, if at all, do the sequels

I could be wrong, but doesnít trilogy mean 3. So if they made a part 4 why are they still considered a trilogy? You canít just leave them out because they sucked. Take out Star Trek, Superman, Die Hard, Planet of the Apes Bat Man and Alien. Coming soon Mad Max 4 and Jurassic Park 4.

-Jurassic Park 2 should be a little higher.
-Jurassic Park 3 should be non-existent.

-LOTR are definitely way overrated.
-Die Harder is way too high. Vengeance is better.
-Blade 1 is better than blade 2.
-POTA 3 is better than 2.
-Godfather 1 should be slightly above 2.
-Batman 1 and 2 should be equal.
- Alien 2 is way too high. 1 should be above 2. 3 is underrated.

disagree with a few. especially DIE HARDER that one was a stinker in my opinion. As well as the first STAR WARS will always be the best in the series.

since this "meter" is just some guys opinion we shouldnt be to offended by its total lack of rightness.
how can you have JP1 rated so low? i know JP3 wasnt the greatest, but JP2 was pretty good.
TLOTR2 to me was the best of the 3 movies. they were all great though.
Jaws 3 above 2, come on. neither where very good, but 3 was a disaster.
Diehard 4 is a close second to the first one, but that ruins the whole trilogy thing which means it shouldnt even be on the list. along with Indiana Jones,

I don't agree with all the rankings, but it was a pretty cool idea. I never really realized how many trilogies there are, includind some trilogies left out:

Bourne movies
Pirates of the Caribbean
Mummy trilogy
Mission Impossible
Star Wars prequels
Robocop
Karate Kid
Oceans 11,12,13
Beverly Hills Cop
Underworld
Mighty Ducks
Scream
Austin Powers
Resident Evil

BTTF!

Back to the Future baby!

and to Movie Man2: I want to analyze your statement - Godfather 3 is "one of the most under appreciated movies in the trilogy." Zuh? how many others (parts 1 or 2) are under appreciated? Neither as far as I know. but i'm just breaking balls. as for your Bourne question, it should rank high, considering it's an awesome trilogy. certainly one of the best this decade.

UNDERappreciated

"The Godfather, Part III" is one of the most unnderappreciated movies in the trilogy, but it was also a great one that brought closure to the series.

What do you think the Bourne trilogy reanks on the list

Lord of the Rings, my favorite movies of all-time and the most consistent trilogy. Not the best, but the most consistent.

Is it the only trilogy to get a best picture nom for 3/3?

And the Bourne trilogy isn't on there because it's really just one very long, shakey cam, chase scene around the world.

I'm a little surprised Godfather is less than Godfather Part II.

And this is actually reminding me of where George Lucas' true strength lies. He was great at making trilogies that didn't fizzle out in the end and insult their predecessors (this of course is referring to the actual three-movie system, if you wanna bring in prequels, count them as a separate trilogy and the claim holds true).

what do the following have in common?

matrix 2 and 3, superman 1 and 3, xmen 1 and 3, spiderman 1 and 3, jurassic park 2 and 3, back to the future 3, star trek 1 and 3, rambo 2 and 3, rocky 2 and 3, terminator 3 batman 2 and 3, alien 3, all of blade mad max and planet of the apes

there all indisputabley worse than godfather 3(this is fact not opinion)yet this douchebag has it as the worst film on the board

other gripes:
no pirates?
no prequel star wars?
jaws shouldnt be on here
and finally:
The definition of a movie

The definition of a movie trilogy has to be clarified...a trilogy is one story (e.g. lotr, star wars) told in three parts

that being said any of these with more than 3 movies are dead after 3 it becomes a series only star wars escapes this fateas its two different stoies connected by only one character(mostly)so indy, star trek, superman, x-men, jaws, die hard, planet of the apes, rocky, terminator, rambo, batman, and alien are void and spiderman and lotr will join them unless spidey 4 and the hobbit aren't made

Steviebaby... Fincher himself doesn't even care for Alien3 and hated doing it. Not to mention it's a POS movie that's only remotely watchable because of Fincher's involvement. Furthermore, it seems that this chart's ratings are a compilation of reviews ala Rotten Tomatoes, and not so much this one person's opinion.

I agree with the others in that most of these don't qualify as a trilogy, since there are more in the series whether we like it or not.
In my opinion:
Alien 3 deserves more(especially the intended cut)
Batman 1 should peak the chart
Rambo 2 beats 3
Rocky 3 does not tie with 2
Die Hard 2 should be lower
Back to the Future 2 is equal to 1
Why is Jaws even on here? Might as well include Halloween, Psycho, Nightmare on Elm St!
Lord of the Rings 2 and 3, equal to 1 really?
All the

All the Spider-Man movies should be at the lowest level.
X-Men 3, definitely higher. Singer is a hack too.
Superman 3 shouldn't rate anything, And 2 beats 1?!?! Blasphemy!
Star Trek 2 beats the others with ease by a great margin.
The Matrix oh so high?? Really? Nope.
Lower Temple of Doom half.

I feel bad for the Matrix Sequels. They're good. They're just very different from the first movie. The story of the sequels actually supports the first movie and makes it matter a bit more. There is more layering and depth added due to those movies. I agree, they aren't as mind blowing, but it would've been worse had they tried to blow your mind 2 more times. They're actually quite interesting in a number of ways (nothing to get into in the strike backs)

I find the idea of ranking individual movies in a trilogy a neat idea, but some of these don't even fit into the definition of a trilogy. Star Trek has 10 movies, Rocky has 6, Batman had 4, Planet of the Apes was 5 how is that a trilogy? Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Die Hard, all were trilogies for a long time before more were added, so I understand those, but some of the others don't belong on a trilogy list.
