The UnPopular Opinion: Top 5 Underrated Movies of 2013

Dec. 18, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Well Schmoes, as 2013 draws to a close we reflect on a year of ups and downs at the movies, both critically and financially. There were some surprises in regards to which highly anticipated movies lived up to their trailers and marketing as well as some dark horses that came out of nowhere to really steal the show. But, if there is one thing for certain, there are always movies that are highly overrated and underrated by critics and fans alike.

As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I felt it was only fitting to issue my list of the movies I felt that the masses got wrong. Some of these may shock you and some may just piss you off, but these are my honest to goodness perspective of the movies of 2013. If you disagree with any of the choices, please voice your own opinion in the talkback below. After all, the only opinion that really matters is yours, I am just here to share mine.

#5 - THE GREAT GATSBY

Baz Luhrmann has always been one of those directors whose style could easily overwhelm the subject matter.  But, with THE GREAT GATSBY, Luhrmann is able to convey the excess of the Roaring Twenties using his hyperkinetic visual style and contemporary music to translate a novel that many have considered unfilmable.  Critics said that the movie lacked the emotional soul of the book while I would argue that the entire focus of the novel is the lack of feeling exhibited by these characters.  The stunning visuals alone make THE GREAT GATSBY an achievement in film.

#4 - PACIFIC RIM

If you think back to the best Summer movies you have ever seen, the majority of them were likely popcorn flicks that let you turn off your brain and just take a rollercoaster ride without leaving the theater.  Guillermo Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM is exactly the type of movie that has been missing since superheroes took over the multiplex.  It has a convoluted backstory that you forget about ten minutes in because you are too busy enjoying huge robots kicking gigantic monster ass.  Idris Elba delivers the best movie speech since Bill Pullman in INDEPENDENCE DAY and for that alone this is one of the best Summer movies of the decade.

#3 - JACK THE GIANT SLAYER

When people heard that Bryan Singer was making a fantasy adventure movie, I think they were expecting something on par with LORD OF THE RINGS or HARRY POTTER.  But, JACK THE GIANT SLAYER is neither of those nor does it want to be.  The movie is a family friendly fairy tale that is a hell of a lot more entertaining than the sterile CHRONICLES OF NARNIA movies.  With a great cast hamming it up including Stanley Tucci and Ewan McGregor, Singer's movie is a light-hearted fun time that got mis-marketed as something completely different.

#2 - GANGSTER SQUAD

After getting bumped from 2012, GANGSTER SQUAD opened up 2013 with a bang.  There is not much beyond the flashy violence and big name stars here, but they sure as hell have a lot of fun with it.  Ryan Gosling, who usually avoids studio fare like this, does his typical brooding bad boy schtick while Emma Stone looks hot as hell in slinky evening wear.  Overall, this feels like YOUNG GUNS crossed with THE UNTOUCHABLES which is not such a bad thing as long as you aren't expecting this to be more than a shoot em up action movie with a noir feel.

#1 - THE LONE RANGER

I guarantee the people you know who criticize THE LONE RANGER are doing so based on word of mouth from critics.  If you have watched the movie, you know it is a fun, oversized western with some funny moments and one of the best action sequences put to film in the last twenty years.  The climactic train scene is a literal roller coaster ride.  Armie Hammer does a good job as a new take on the classic character and Johnny Depp is not nearly as slapstick as the trailers made him out to be.  While it is hard to see where the inflated budget went as the movie doesn't look like it cost $200 million, but it is definitely a movie that deserves to be enjoyed.  It may not be the best movie of 2013 but it is far from the worst.

Lone Ranger

Lone Ranger Sucked because The Lone Ranger himself sucked... What a big wimp. When Tonto slapped him and called him a white Coward I cheered.... The only fucking time I cheered. When the William Tell Overture finally kicked in I was busy wondering how the lone Ranger became the Gay ranger. The Last action scene was so fucking stupid and CGI heavy that I felt no sense of Danger.... But it did not matter by that time I wanted the Ranger and his flailing arms Dead...... A shame because the first

A shame because the first 40 min is pretty good with a far better action scene in the beginning with more real stunts.

Not with you all the way on this

Pacific Rim was Okay but I never felt invested with the cast. I did enjoy Jack the Giant Slayer in 3D. I have yet to see The Great Gatsby or The Lone Ranger but The Gangster Squad was only ok, the action scenes were good (not great) but everything else was so so. Josh Brolin has proven he is not a lead actor who can carry a film.

Lone ranger

I don't know if Long Ranger was a movie that is underrated, just one that flopped because no one saw it. And for me, I didn't go see it because critics said it sucked, I didn't go see it because I did not care in the least bit of this type of western movie or the remake of the characters/story.

Wait. where the hell is Rush. That movie was awesome. Daniel Bruhl slayed in that and Chris Hensworth worked perfectly as his foil. That was some of the best movie watching I had all year. Any other Rush fans out there?

About Jack the Giant Slayer...

It has the best adventure score in years, so I highly recommend to check it out.
If the movie was more likened, John Ottman would be nominated for this! Amazing music!

We were all getting along well until.....

Agreed, surprisingly with all of them. Until number 1. The Lone Ranger is a massive fail. It didn't know what it wanted to be and Bruckheimers grubby little trade marks were all over it. Abysmal. Depp needs some quality work soon so we don't start to think of him in Eddie Murphy's circle.

Almost perfect.....

I was right with you until #1. Lone Ranger was an abomination. Watching the horse climb a tree, Johnny Depp jump 100 feet from a moving train only to land on another moving train, and any of 100 other instances of ridiculous ignoring of all laws of physics (not to mention logic) made the movie mediocre. Turning the Ranger into a punchline while making Tonto the brains (and courage) of the operation made it a steaming pile of crap.

But I loved every other movie on your list. They were all

I agree that Lone Ranger was the most underrated movie of the year. Pacific Rim was good, Gatsby and Jack were ok. Gangster Squad didn't do anything for me. I would say that Rush and Snitch were some other underrated films this year. Most people who saw them liked the films, but I think they slipped under the radar for most people.

90% Agree

'Pacific Rim' being on here is slightly confusing, since even though it wasn't as smash hit those that saw it really enjoyed it. So is it really 'underrated' or simply 'underseen'? Which I would argue are two different things.

More importantly, I agree with numbers 5 through 2; especially 'Gangster Squad'. I thought it was brilliant. 'Gatsby' was well acted and lots of fun. 'PR' was excellent, if a bit convoluted. 'Jack' has odd pacing in the beginning but the ending is awesome.

However, I saw 'The Lone Ranger' opening weekend and genuinely loathed and despised everything about it! The CGI/ SFX looked fake; rubbery, too sheen, had no weight. Armie Hammer is miscast entirely. He's not believable as a buffoon. Depp is just plain boring as hell. I feel like he's done this same performance a million and a half times by this point. The action was uninspired and what the fuck was up with that damned horse? Most importantly, the movie is tonally challenge- one minute it's adventure romp for the family, the next the main bad guy is eating a dead guy's heart. Then we have the buddy comedy stuff of the leads. None of the tones gel or make sense. The less said about the almost nonexistent female characters or the terrible way the movie treats them the better. The racism has been discussed elsewhere, and is everywhere.

If you seriously believe that I hate this goddamn movie because I read a review, please go stick on a red poker and spin until you bleed out of your eyes. Somehow, you enjoyed this massive shit pile; more power to you, I won't begrudge you your opinion. But to state that someone only bad talked this movie because they read a review is insulting to everyone everywhere. You should feel shame for even thinking, much less suggesting it.

Does Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump offend you? How about Eddy Murphy as a white guy? What about Robin Willams as a woman, or a gay man?

Tom Hanks as a dim witted individual? No. Eddie Murphy as a white guy? Yes. Also see Eddie Murphy as an asian man or the Wayans as white chicks. Robin Williams as a man in drag? No. As a homosexual? No. You as a total moron? No, because clearly that's what you actually are. Playing someone who is gay or mentally challenged (which I guess is what you were going for with Forrest Gump) isn't offensive because these characters can look like anyone. Race is completely different (obvious to anyone

Ok

The music with Gatsby I thought was just lazy film making. Yeah I get that he used modern music to convey the swinging 20's and the decadence of the time period... but doesn't jazz and other music of the era do the same. And the use of that Beyonce song Crazy in Love or whatever while Gatsby was acting Crazy in Love is just a little too nail on the head. Why not do a singing narration of the scene for us and what Gatsby is thinking? Just lazy...

Pacific Rim shouldn't count. Amongst the types who read this site, it was a highly anticipated movie.

However I concur with the Jack pick. As a parent I fully appreciated that movie as something for everyone in the house and it was much better than I expected it to be.

PACIFIC RIM opened second (to an Adam Sandler movie, nonetheless), and while it grossed a lot of money eventually, it didn't gross enough to inmediately greenlight a sequel.

GATSBY - 5/10; P.R. - 7/10; JACK - 4/10; G.S. & T.L.R. - 3/10.

Everything you said about GATSBY is true, but it didn't keep the plot from dragging. I knew what to expect with JACK, but I just didn't care about the characters. GANSTER SQUAD was boring as Hell. I'm always objective, and so I don't hate THE LONE RANGER because it's cool to hate it. It's full of problems.

I did love Pacific Rim and was under the impression that most who saw it did too. It's just too bad not enough people saw it. I did see Gangster Squad as well and thought it was awful. The acting left a lot to be desired and it was terribly written, a cliche ridden mess of a film that could have been great if it weren't treated with such cheese. The others I had no real interest in. Jack was ok and I plan to rent Lone Ranger. I have absolutely zero interest in Gatsby though. I hated that book.

Not a horrible list, although I hated The Great Gatsby and thought Jack the 'Giant Slayer was mediocrity incarnate.
I'm not sure Pac Rim needs to be here, it's a bit of a fanboy darling and it's actually one of the only big blockbusters that did well with critics during the summer. Pac Rim, Iron Man and Star Trek. If The Lone Ranger was 25 minutes shorter it would be really good. As it stands it's just "Better than given credit". I usually don't criticize movie runtime but I felt it in The

I liked the Lone Ranger a lot more than I thought I would after the reviews it got. It was a damn fun time at the movies. Man of Steel, by far. Finally we get a Superman that kicks ass, but it got unfairly nitpicked by the casual moviegoers and the fanboys themselves.

My thoughts

Gatsby- I don't think the novel could really be properly executed as a film. It is one of those novels that just should be read. Baz's film was all style and that is the exact thing Fitzgerald hated and made fun of in the novel.

Pacific Rim- I liked that film. It isn't a masterpiece or anything but has heart and is better directed than "Transformers 2 and 3". The middle battle in that film is worth the price of admission alone.

Jack: The Giant Slayer- Saw this on the plane. I

Jack: The Giant Slayer- Saw this on the plane. I thought it was a solid family adventure even though I wish they had actors portray the giants. This is a trend that is starting to bother me a bit. It just takes me out movies when an all CGI character who could have easily been played by a human is rendered.

Gangster Squad- Had fun with it but it was really dumb and Sean Penn chewed the scenery.

Lone Ranger- Outside of the final train chase scene this film just tried to emulate Pirates and was over-bloated.

Pacific Rim was fine, but lacked depth which just seemed a bit odd from del Toro. Fine for what it was and a fun blast, but not up to his usual standard. If you just want robots punching monsters then it hits the mark. I do think it's something that could be expanded upon and improved with a sequel, though.

I also enjoyed The Lone Ranger a lot. Not my favorite of the year either, but I was hoping for Rango crossed with Pirates OTC and I got it. My second favorite movie of the year was Mud and I'm still shocked how many people haven't even heard of it. Also, while it is far from a great film, I feel Delivery Man deserves a better rap than it is getting.

I agree with all of the unpopular pics on the is list except for the Lone Ranger. Other depictions of the Lone Ranger have him as an intelligent, problem solving hero. 2nd, The Lone Ranger Theme was misplaced and really took away form a great train chase scene. It was distracting and ruined what could have been a classic chase scene. Dumbing down The Lone Ranger really ruined the film.

I completely agree. Specially about the theme song. It didn't fit with the scene. It just highlighted how different the movie was from the show. And I never even saw the show!

Loved Pacific Rim & Jack the Giant Slayer

My kids loved the latter too.

while i can heartily agree on most of your choices, Gangster Squad was just plain bad. i love most every actor in the film but it was cheese in a bad way. bad writing, silly slow mo shoot outs and predictably deaths all around. i mean, kill the newsie? cmon

Yea, I really dug The Lone Ranger. It could have cut some of the fat and took the whole thing a little more serious, but the idea that the ranger who was saved by Tonto was not a real man of action but a clumsy goody two-shoes who stumbled into heroic (as in the action sense) deeds is an interesting take. It was a like a western take on Don Quixote

Can't say I cared a lick for Gangster Squad. Dead Man Down is a movie I thought was a little underrated.

I totally agree with the Lone Ranger. If it came out in 2003, and Pirates came out now people would be hating Pirates and saying it was just Lone Ranger. I though it encompassed everything a summer movie should be. Lighthearted, simple, fun. I don;t think Pacific Rim should be on this list. It's not underrated. It's actually very over rated.(I absolutely hated it. My least favorite movie this year, second only to The Worlds End which could be the worst movie I've ever watch at the movies.)

I only agree with #4 and #2. Gatsby was okay, I didn't see Jack the Giant Slayer, and I personally thought Lone Ranger sucked. Not a bad list, though, all told.

Pacific Rim is one the best movies of the year. The Lone Ranger is also very good, a bit too long though. They should cut Bonham Carter out of that movie and save 15 minutes.. Don't know if Kick-Ass 2 is getting love or not but I enjoyed it, even if it obviously wasn't as cool as the first one.

Of all these films, I must say that the only one that stood up to repeat viewing was Pacific Rim. This film was visually alluring and engaging enough to warrant repeat viewing. I think if we go into these films wanting not what they are selling, then we are never going to give them a fair go. Gatsby was mind-numbing and a victim of it's over-exuberance, much like the characters presented. Maybe that was the point and maybe I'm guilty of the very case I made previously. Maybe...

Great Gatsby had phenomenal filmmaking on show. It is one of the true cinematic achievements of the year. Pacific RIm was underwhelming but it wasn't bad for one watch. I won't discuss Lone Ranger and Jack because I haven't seen them and probably never will - I have zero interest in those movie. But Gangster Squad was a HORRIBLE movie. If anything it was hilariously bad.

If you ask me these are the underrated movies of the year - Mama, Oblivion, Only God Forgives or The Iceman

THERE IS A REASON THEY ARE UNDER-RATED

Sorry but Gangster Squad was the biggest disappointment of the year, I like my gangster flicks, but this was awful for the calibre of cast that were in it. I was expecting another LA Confidential.

All five movies on the list are not as bad as critics made them out to be. My favorite of these five films is Gangster Squad. It likes a good ol' action movie straight out of the 1950s.

I still don't get it...

You see, I'm a man of simple taste. I enjoy dynamite, and gunpower and big dumb action movies. But I just found Pacific Rim to be the most boring movie of the year. Even The Lone Ranger was more entertaining than watching these soulless giant monsters fighting soulless giant robots (the pilots were just bad characters delivering boring lines). I'd say Pacific Rim is easily the most overrated movie of the year amoung the geek community. And to me, it really is this year's Battleship.

Completely agree with Lone Ranger, best last 20 minutes of a movie this year. I also enjoyed the others listed except Gangster Squad which I haven't seen.

The Lone Ranger was this year's Green Lantern (2011) or John Carter (2012). Spending a lot of money on CGI is not going to make people want to see a movie. In fact, too much CGI can make a movie look like a cartoon, which was the biggest complaint people had when Star Wars Episode I came out in 1999. I saw a bit of John Carter on TV recently and the scene where he realizes that he was "telegraphed" to Mars and was only a copy of the John Carter that was still on Earth was interesting and

Trailers should try to intrigue people and get them interested in seeing a movie rather than just dazzling their senses.

ok I can agree with most of these but Gangster Squad was just a giant pile of shit, they were going for Untouchables but this garbage just ended up being unwatchable, the solid cast was totally wasted as was the time of anyone who watched it.

I think Gangster Sqaud worked almost in a silly, cartoony, Dick Tracy-kinda way. The Great Gatsby was filled with dazzling visuals and Baz Luhrmann always tends towards over-stylisation, with the story suffering for it in the end. Leonardo DiCaprio was excellent in it, though. I actually didn't mind The Lone Ranger, it was something like a 5.5 out of 10 for me. Entertaining in parts but generally it really was all over the place and a blatant vanity project for Depp. Pacific Rim was great

Great Top Five!

Great list and the I love the fact that you chose The Lone Ranger and Gangster Squad as your top two picks.

They're both two very entertaining, underrated films that should have done better. Especially the Lone Ranger. That movie is nowhere near the bad quality that most critics would have you believe. Such a fun film with some of the best action of the year and with a couple of knockout performances from Hammer and Depp.

It's a good list except for "Gangster Squad"

"Gangster Squad" was ridiculous. They actually tried to pass the film off as 'based on a true story'. Mickey Cohen was not arrested for murder or in a downtown LA tommy gun shoot out. If it was going to be fun and flashy, then leave out all the 'based on a true story' bs.
I enjoy "The Lone Ranger" and was disappointed by all it's backlash.
