The Walking Dead producers detail more about season 3 (and 4)!

Mar. 21, 2012by: Alex Maidy

With the second season barely three days behind us, heated discussion has popped up regarding the future of THE WALKING DEAD. While the image of a cloaked Michonne and the Danai Gurira casting news has been the big talk so far, the closing image of the prison is what fans should be focused on.

Showrunner Glen Mazzara held a conference call yesterday to discuss the next season and had this to say about the prison.

"Right now, I do see the prison storyline lasting through both Season 3 and 4. I do think that is a major storyline. I know we were on the farm, perhaps, longer than people wanted. There were reasons for that. What we want is for that prison to not feel claustrophobic. I think the farm played a little claustrophobic for some people. Now that the entire landscape has fallen victim to the zombie apocalypse, zombies are literally at the gates of this prison. That prison is a very small safe corner. There is a lot of danger around. It won't feel like we are bottled up, the way we were on the farm. I do think that prison is a significant storyline, but we are also interested in opening up this world. The Governor has the world of Woodbury. There are other factors out there, other groups. I do think that Rick's group is stumbling into a much larger world."

Without spoiling the major events that occur in the comic book at the prison, we are in for some serious drama. Many fans of THE WALKING DEAD comic hail this plot arc as the high water mark for the series, including myself.

Mazzara went on to describe the upcoming season as a "reset" of sorts.

"There is a lot of great material from the comic book. This show would have to go on for twenty years to get to all of it. I think the Tyrese character is someone we are interested in introducing at some point. We still have Morgan and Dwayne, who are out there from the pilot. We are interested in them. There are new characters that will be original too the series. Not coming straight from the comic book. I think the first two seasons have served as a prologue. Now we are hitting the ground running. I see Season 3 resetting the show in terms of what I really hope to convey."

THE WALKING DEAD as a comic had twenty pages a month to convey the storylines, with each arc covering just about six issues. With the comic currently having crossed 100 issues, they have quite a lot of material to mine. A reset is absolutely the word that should be used here, as the entire prison and Governor storylines will need to be drawn out.

Time to get excited.

Extra Tidbit: I want to see if the show has the balls to show everything that happens when the Governor reaches the prison. Something tells me AMC won't have what it takes to show it on television.

"Semi Spoilery Predictions"

Season 3 - Group finds prison, dive into Michonne's awesomeness, learn of dismemberment stopping "infection", End season with introducing governor.

Season 4 - Governor shit goes wild, Lorie gives birth, end season with Rick loosing his hand.

Don't know if any of that will happen in that order, but that's what I'd do... and I'm awesome.

The S2 finale blew me away. The show bounced back to form & then some. S3 can't be anything but sick and wicked.

Spoiler-ish warning!!!

Again, spoiler-ish warning if you haven't seen the last couple of episodes or didn't read the comics...

If they don't have the balls to have Carl shoot Shane they will never have the balls to show any of what happens with the Governor. Hell, even if they would've had Carl kill Shane they would NEVER have the balls to have the whole Governor/Michonne events happen on TV. Never ever.

P.S. If they spend the entire damn season 2 on the farm they better spend more time in the prison!!!

And I thought waiting for a week for a new episode was grueling. Now I have to wait months for a new season. And "This isn't a democracy anymore" & "Ricktatorship" is going to be as famous as Iron Man's line "We have The Hulk" from The Avengers!

Extra tidbit: Issue 48 is BEGGING to be the S4 finale. I also really hope they have the balls. Michonne also has LOTS of stuff to go through in Woodbury...hope they do that too. AMC better not cut corners for what they think the audience can/can't handle.

Tyrese is my favorite character from the book.

I am DYING for him to finally pop up. Even though Darrel is essentially White-Tyrese.

Not even close, my friend. He's not nearly as emotional as Tyrese.

The season finale made me ecstatic and I can't wait for season 3. All of this is really the kind of re-invigoration that the show needs after some of the dull moments of season 2. The prison will be interesting. That was HUGE chunk of the comics, but there was also a lot of downtime. And without several characters there, it will be interesting to see how the show navigates it. Really, I can see that whole arc lasting 2 seasons because of it's size. We're getting The Governor next season, that's

We're getting The Governor next season, that's been confirmed, but the question remains when he makes his appearance, which I estimate could be towards the end of the season. Guess we'll see come October.

Very good to hear they will be finally bringing in Tyrese. For the longest time I was afraid Token-Dog was their version of Tyrese. Whew!.. What a relief.

You know they'll probably kill him off once Tyrese shows up.

haha. Token Dog. He barely gets to speak. When i looked up the comic online i was surprised how many black characters there were because the TV show seems to only feature rednecks and Glenn.

Can't wait. Today I was actually re-reading "Days Gone Bye" and I was thinking to myself I wonder if we'll see Morgan and Dwayne again.

Undead

Damn, I can't wait for the fall. Wait a minute, there's an epic movie summer (and winter!) ahead of us. Let this bitch simmer a bit, I say. Good things come to those who wait.

Fuck that, I want it now!

Good, I was actually hoping they wouldn't cram the entire prison arc into one season. There's just too much of it and since it's all so good, I'm glad they won't throw it all out there in 16 episodes. And I hope Tyrese shows up. I've been wondering where the hell he's been all through season 2.

WTF is this guy talking about? First he says that he wants to expand on the comics world only then to say that there is too much in the comics to put into the show? That makes no fucking sense! This the kind of shit that has cause this show to fall so far away

This the kind of shit that has cause this show to fall so far away from the source material, the idiots have no idea what they want to do. They should just rename this show "AMC presents Zombies" or something cause the only tie ins to the comic now are the title and the names of a few characters.

While I don't agree with everything you said, you're unfortunately kinda right. They do seem to dip out of the material more than in. Hopefully seasons 3&4 will fix that. I love the comic enough to stay with the show and see what happens.

This is amazing news. I don't know where to start. Introducing Tyreese at some point is re-assuring since his character is a high point in the series, the fact that they're not rushing through the prison arc and are giving it two seasons worth is fantastic, and I love the prospect of new characters as well as following the comic more closely. This series so far has been amazing, so I'm psyched to read this news.
