The Weinstein Co to team with Miramax to produce sequels to their old hits

12.16.2010

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE 2? ROUNDERS 2? SWINGERS 2?? CLERKS 3??? Those are just some of the titles being proposed in a new partnership between Miramax and The Weinstein Company that will sequelize some of the classics in the old Weinstein library. The first projects under the deal will be sequels to BAD SANTA, ROUNDERS and SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. Before you ask, there was no talent involvement announced so I have a feeling it will be less like WALL STREET 2 and more like MEAN GIRLS 2.

Other titles mentioned as possibilities include BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, COPLAND, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SWINGERS, CLERKS and THE AMITYVILLE HORROR. I sent a request to Kevin Smith to clarify any involvement he would have in another CLERKS sequel (or whether he's even aware of the proceedings) and will post his response as soon as I hear back.

UPDATE - Kevin Smith has responded to the potential CLERKS sequel and said this: "I sold the movie to them in 1994. But I guess if someone was going to exploit the library for sequels, remakes, tv, I'd rather it be the devil I know. Nice to know there's a home for Clerks III if I ever wanted to make it, but hope it doesn't become a home for a Clerks-anything if I'm not involved. Either way, I doubt my shit is even something they wanna re-do/remake. They own Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jersey Girl and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. But then it's further complicated by the Jay & Silent Bob of it all. They don't own Jay & Silent Bob; I do. They own Strike Back, but they can't make any flick that'd include Jay & Silent Bob (even a Strike Back sequel) without my permission/license."

Some of the films above have already seen sequels (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, BRIDGET JONES and AMITYVILLE HORROR) but others hardly need a sequel at all. Also mentioned as a possibility are television shows and more double-dipping for special edition DVDs and Blu-rays.

I'm sure we'll get more details on these projects soon but it's looking like those direct-to-DVD bins are about to get a few more random copies.

Extra Tidbit: If there's a SWINGERS TV show, I'll dig a hole, climb inside and live there until it's eventual cancellation.

Lame. Go spend the money developing some original scripts instead of making shit direct to DVD sequels.

This will never happen...

And here's why. The Weinsteins make movies then leave the on the shelf so long until everyone no one cares and then the release them. These are the ba$tard$ that gave The Road a limited released and I still hate them for it.

English Patient 2?

I think Miramax should really look into English Patient 2, since they're obviously hard up for cash.

Yeah, those direct-to-DVD sequels

worked so well for Disney. The Weinsteins must be seriously hard up for $$$.

How do you even make a sequel to Shakespeare in Love? Sometimes you wonder why the people in power in Hollywood got there in the first place.

Does anybody actually buy/watch any of those trash direct-to-video sequels. I see them in trailers or in the stores, but I don't anyone who watches them. I've caught small parts of a couple on tv, but they are garbage and certainly nothing I would pay for. Even as a business plan, I have no idea how the studio actually makes money from these crap direct-to-video releases.

I might be ready for new From Dusk till Dawn movie, but only if it was made by Rodriguez, Tarantino and Clooney. And I don't mean just as producers, but as director, writer and a star.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. The Weinsteins are a couple of greedy hacks. No Oscar bait this year so we'd better make a bunch of shiity direct to DVD sequels that stupid people will buy and rent!

Will the Weinstein's please just go out of business already? for a couple of guys who built a business based on making indie movies mainstream, they certainly have been regressing towards typical hollywood bullshit lately. I imagine these guys are calling up Quentin Tarantino every other day just to see if he has another movie ready, since his stuff seems to be about the only thing these days that makes the Weinstein's any money.

Seriously, if you are looking at SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE 2 it is

WTF???

Oh man the Whine-steins are such a pair of cock suckers. They can't find any good original properties and the off chance they do they delay the fuck out of them and change them around.

So now they taking yet another step down douche bag lane and rehashing the bits of success they've had in the past?!? B-R-Utal.

Also there are 2 or 3 shite sequels for Dusk Til Dawn so they've missed the boat on that one.

Fuck the Whine-steins right in the ear!

I've long hoped that

something would compel Smith to return to Clerks, however far in the future, but this certainly isn't the way to do it. I seriously doubt they'll pull him on board as such. I hope not.

This is such a bad idea. There is a reason why these movies are all classics and should not be touched with "watered down" straight to dvd unnecessary sequels.

Wasn't there a rumor that Norton and Damon were considering another "Rounders" movie? Or did I just hear wrong?

Clerks 3. That's hilarious. Clerks 2 was a monstrous shit sandwich, so it wouldn't shock me if Smith copped to a Clerks 3.

Clerks 3 is the only one even remotely a good idea. People asked why do we need Clerks 2 but it worked out good in the end so a 3rd isnt too terrible

Well the Weinsteins and Miramax can officially fuck themselves now. This is just a pathetic cash grab. Hopefully everyone will be smart and avoid all these movies at all costs so no profits will be made from these movies and other studios will see fit not to do this bullshit.
