The Weinstein Co to team with Miramax to produce sequels to their old hits

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE 2? ROUNDERS 2? SWINGERS 2?? CLERKS 3??? Those are just some of the titles being proposed in a new partnership between Miramax and The Weinstein Company that will sequelize some of the classics in the old Weinstein library. The first projects under the deal will be sequels to BAD SANTA, ROUNDERS and SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. Before you ask, there was no talent involvement announced so I have a feeling it will be less like WALL STREET 2 and more like MEAN GIRLS 2.

Other titles mentioned as possibilities include BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, COPLAND, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SWINGERS, CLERKS and THE AMITYVILLE HORROR. I sent a request to Kevin Smith to clarify any involvement he would have in another CLERKS sequel (or whether he's even aware of the proceedings) and will post his response as soon as I hear back.

UPDATE - Kevin Smith has responded to the potential CLERKS sequel and said this: "I sold the movie to them in 1994. But I guess if someone was going to exploit the library for sequels, remakes, tv, I'd rather it be the devil I know. Nice to know there's a home for Clerks III if I ever wanted to make it, but hope it doesn't become a home for a Clerks-anything if I'm not involved. Either way, I doubt my shit is even something they wanna re-do/remake. They own Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jersey Girl and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. But then it's further complicated by the Jay & Silent Bob of it all. They don't own Jay & Silent Bob; I do. They own Strike Back, but they can't make any flick that'd include Jay & Silent Bob (even a Strike Back sequel) without my permission/license."

Some of the films above have already seen sequels (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, BRIDGET JONES and AMITYVILLE HORROR) but others hardly need a sequel at all. Also mentioned as a possibility are television shows and more double-dipping for special edition DVDs and Blu-rays.

I'm sure we'll get more details on these projects soon but it's looking like those direct-to-DVD bins are about to get a few more random copies.

Extra Tidbit: If there's a SWINGERS TV show, I'll dig a hole, climb inside and live there until it's eventual cancellation.
