The Weinstein Company puts out a statement regarding the NC-17 rating for Blue Valentine

10.14.2010

Not happy with the NC-17 rating that BLUE VALENTINE was given?

Neither was The Weinstein Company.

But why is the rating such a big deal? It might have something to do with the fact that it was given an NC-17 due to a little bit of pleasurable cunnilingus. Is muff diving so bad? I mean, I seriously doubt that they get all close up and give it the porno treatment.

Apparently the word spread fast and people were dumbfounded over the rating, so much so that The Weinstein Company decided to put out a statement regarding the issue.

Here's the official statement:

“We want to express our deepest gratitude to our colleagues in the industry and in the media for their recent outpouring of support for Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine after the film surprisingly received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA. We are taking every possible step to contest the MPAA’s decision. We respect the work of the MPAA and we hope, after having a chance to sit down with them, they will see that our appeal is reasonable, and the film, which is an honest and personal portrait of a relationship, would be significantly harmed by such a rating.” – Harvey Weinstein

Extra Tidbit: My favorite hilarious rating is the PG-13 for TWISTER due to the "intense depiction of very bad weather".

I dont REALLY see what the big deal is. If the movie's good, you see it. R is 17 and older and NC17 is the same. I personally am more appealed to see an NC17 movie cause it's obviously more realistic or nitty gritty.

I think the problem is that The Weinstein Company might have trouble finding theatres to screen it. It's been a problem for NC-17 films in the past. But maybe things have changed.

That said, I think you've got a point about the rating being an appealing factor for audiences.

Maybe they can just overdub and reedit the scene to make it look like he's eating her asshole instead. That should at least be an act the MPAA can relate to.

This needs to be R without any cutting done to it. If they get it contested and the flick's put in a good amount of theaters, those Weinsteins will have my $12 in their pockets for sure.

Ahhh, the good ol' MPAA

You can have a woman get her arms chopped off, then thrown off a tall building, and have her scream every obscenity in the book on the way down until she's shown splatting onto the concrete below. Just make sure she's not naked in the process. You know -- for the kids!

Actually, naked doesn't matter. So long as she's not having an orgasm.
