The WiiU won't play DVDs or Blu-rays

Jun. 15, 2011by: Paul Tassi

If you're expecting the WiiU to be your new media hub when it's released next year, don't hold your breath.

There is now official word from Nintendo that the system will not play DVDs OR Blu-Rays. This is despite the fact that is uses a 25GB game disc format similar to Sony's Blu-ray games, but Nintendo says the extra functionality isn't necessary.

"Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities. The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies."

You know, I can agree with that. Pretty much everyone who wants one has a DVD player in their house right now, and Blu-ray? That's Sony's deal, and Nintendo doesn't benefit from catering to them.

Now, that being said, I would hope the WiiU has other entertainment capabilities, like the ability to play movies from a USB port, or to stream Netflix and other services. If it can do that, DVD and Blu-Ray really aren't necessary at all.

Extra Tidbit: I still absolutely loathe the name though.

the name of the system is dumb and the look of its is dumb as shit. But not playing dvds or blu rays is a major mistake. You cantr assume that everbody already has those. It should be there regardless it add to the value and prestige of the system. This is going to be a disaster mark my words. If they are assuming people already ahve blu ray and dvd players then they should have assumed everyone has a tablet or iphone so there dumbass new controller is unnecessary as well. Nintendo is going

a Blu ray player will always be necessary if you want to view any of the special features from a movie.

uh? I hope you would be able to get on the internet and use services like netflix, otherwise it doesn't seem very next gen to me.

Every DVD player I have ever owned has been built into my game console. I use my systems as an all in one device and once again Nintendo is behind the times. I'm officially done with Nintendo all together now. The Wii was a waste of money and the Wii U is the last straw for me. Enough with the gimmickes and make a damn good system. They've got a massive head start on the next console generation and a library of first party IPs to put all the others to shame but they continue to disappoint

It can be argued...

Well those of us who bought a ps3 or 360 can argue we already have consoles that will play the games announced for the Wii-U...

With All Due Respect...

... but not having a dvd or Blu-Ray player in a next gen console is just dumb. We can all act like it's "ok" it's missing the basic multimedia requirements of a next gen system because it streams content. Well, it's not "ok." Streaming content limits the choices I like having when viewing films. I like seeing full widescreen pictures when watching a movie. I don't have that option when streaming. Also, when streaming, I apparently need to spend two and a half hours watching a ninety minute

Having the ability to watch a DVD instead of streaming is a necessity till the U.S. infrastructure is brought into the twenty-first century.

But who doesnt have a dvd player of some kind? non gamers have DVD/Blu Ray players, Gamers have a WIi, 360, PS3 or all 3 which all play DVDs and Blu Rays. Nintendo is known for cutting out things to lower cost, and this usually reflects in the pricing of the system. Its a good thing, because if you dont have a dvd player by now of ANY KIND then you must not watch a lot of movies and or tv so it still wouldnt be needed. I really dont see the issue. I can understand if they were cutting out

Wow, if it really takes you nearly twice as long to watch a 90 minute movie due to re-buffering, then you have a pretty shitty internet connection.

Couldn't really care less... I have both DVD and Blu-ray players... So why another in my Wii that will be set up right next the other players?
So as long as this gets some kickass games on release, Nintendo have my money.

So what?

Don't we all have DVD or Blu-Ray players anyway? It's a gaming console, so it shouldn't need to be able to play movies. It's supposed to play games.

Sorry Nintendo, I disagree with your argument here. These features should be standard now for any new console, regardless of the manufacturer. You're behind the ball once again Nintendo, live in the now!

Good for them....

I like this, the fact that it won't play DVD or Blu Ray will really curb the pirates out there who mod their systems and burn games, combined with the fact they can no longer stack games on SD Cards for Softmod at 25 Gigs...While it would be a nice added feature, I do agree that most people already have these players so what's the point.

bad move

Bad move Nintendo. I wasn't paying too close of attention, but it seemed like this system would allow them to have a catch-up device to compete with Xbox and PS3 - with the added benefit of a few years to get some advanced tech in there. Guess not. The blu ray should've definitely been there...but it can't even play a normal DVD? Gamers are expecting that functionality now.

Worst. Name. Ever.
And does anyone really care for that stupid WiiU?? Oh hey how great another Zelda game and another Mario and too many other shitty games. A lot of people keep telling me that Wii is for kids, but I find that insulting for kids. When I was a kid we had the 8-bit NES, now THAT was a great console.

I can't believe you just called Mario and Zelda shitty games. Have you even played Super Mario Galaxy 2?

If you read what I wrote I didn't say Mario and Zelda were shitty. I said "another Zelda and Mario and too many other shitty games". Meaning Nintendo have been putting out A LOT of bad games over the last few years, they seem to be loosing it.
Enjoy Mario and Zelda if there your kind of games. I just wish Nintendo would go and do something new for a change and have more diversity like they did for the NES and SNES.
And no I didn't like Mario Galaxy 2, not at all.

This is one of the areas that Nintendo failed with this machine. The others are the controller and the graphical prowess, which, while it's more powerful than it's competitors, isn't current gen compared with PC graphics.

That's fine. It would have been nice but I have plenty of DVD Players here. And 2 Blu-Ray players (1 being a PS3).
As long as Netflix Streaming comes to Wii U, that's all I need. Considering how Netflix has been cozy with Nintendo, I expect that to happen. It would be really cool to watch movies on the tablet controller, if say, you have people over and they want to watch something different.

This was expected. They did the same with Gamecube, Wii, and now with WiiU. And I'm almost 100% sure it will be able to stream Netflix since Wii already does that.

On the plus side I hear it makes one helluva cup of coffee...

You know, somehow we all made it through the 80's and 90's without our Nintendos and Super Nintendos playing video tapes. Life will go on. The good thing is that it won't drive up the cost of the new Wii. Poor us. We'll only be able to watch our movies on our DVD players, or Blu-Ray players, or PS2s, or PS3s, or X-Box, or X-Box 360, or our computers, or our laptops, or in our cars, or on our iPods...boo-hoo.

While I understand their reasoning, I still think they should add DVD playback. It's nice to have in case the system is in a room without a DVD player.

Just not interested in this system right now...

It just seems like another gimmick from Nintendo. Also, I believe that I read somewhere that the graphics are just going to be on par with 360 and PS3. You'd think a new system coming out in this day of age would have better graphics. I suppose this will allow third party games to be released simultaneously on all three systems though.

Overall, definitely wait and see for me. Right now I think the controller looks dumb and awkward.
