The Winners and Losers of Summer 2010!

08.31.2010

Stop me if you've heard this one before but wow, what a weird summer season. Movies that we loved, didn't do so well (SCOTT PILGRIM). Movies that we didn't love, did very well (GROWN UPS). But then there were the films that everyone seemed to enjoy (TOY STORY 3, INCEPTION). Now that the summer season has all but wrapped itself up, we decided to take a look back at the past few months to see who came out on top and who sank to the bottom...

WINNERS

DESPICABLE ME - Sure TOY STORY 3 made it rain dolla dolla bills (see below) but everyone mostly expected that. What fewer people expected was the success of DESPICABLE ME, an animated film by an unproven outlet (Universal-based Illumination Entertainment) based on an original concept. The movie wound up just $5 million shy of DreamWorks' vaunted SHREK franchise and looks set to spawn its own franchise (while SHREK peters out).

Will Smith's Family - Few remakes have seen as much derision as THE KARATE KID. Almost immediately after it was announced, fans of the original (and/or fans of just good movies) were somewhat disgusted with the idea of Will Smith's son starring in a remake. But then the film, which Smith also produced, turned out to not suck and top $175 million.

Pixar - It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Pixar, they of constant success, would wind up on a list of "winners" but even the harshest observer of the animation studio would admit that Summer 2010 was a landmark for Pixar. TOY STORY 3 became the highest grossing animated movie of all-time, the second highest grossing Disney film of all-time (after only PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST) and one of the 10 highest grossing movies of all-time. It's got a 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and will very likely be nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards. So...yeah, even by their own lofty standards, Pixar filled up with win this summer.

Manly Men - We were all looking forward to THE EXPENDALBES but I think few people realized how well the film would actually do. In a summer that saw Adrien Brody, Michael Cera and Jake Gyllenhaal all play the role of action hero, Sylvester Stallone brought out his crew of old school action heroes and audiences responded in a big way. At the rate THE EXPENDABLES is going, it will likely be Stallone's first starring role in a $100MM+ movie since 1985's ROCKY IV. That, plus MACHETE and an EXPENDABLES sequels proves the manly men are making a comeback.

PIRANHA 3D / SCOTT PILGRIM - It may seem odd to include these films in the list of winners when both of them underperformed at the box-office. But when did we start loving movies because of how much money giant corporations are making? Last I checked Viacom, Time Warner, News Corp, NBC Universal and Disney aren't sending me any checks in the mail. I love movies and started writing about movies because of the movies themselves. Both PIRANHA and PILGRIM won over audiences almost immediately with their charm (albeit drastically different charm) and will surely be pleasing cult audiences for years and years to come.

INCEPTION - It's rare that a summer action film that grosses over $250 million could also be one of the best reviewed films of the year and a frontrunner for the Oscars, but that's exactly what happened with Christopher Nolan's follow-up. A unique critical and commercial smash, INCEPTION wowed audiences and reminded Hollywood that original ideas can still attract audiences.

LOSERS

Jerry Bruckheimer - it's not many times in his career that Jerry Bruckheimer has been listed in the loser column but this summer has been the rare exception. His two summer films, PRINCE OF PERSIA and THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE, were two high-profile duds, despite the amount of cash Disney spent making and marketing them. Bruckheimer has overcome worse flops (see: KANGAROO JACK) so don't count him out for long. After all, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 is on the way...

3D - For the best two years we've been led to believe that the future was arriving and the future was 3D cinema. The hype reached its nadir with AVATAR, arguably 3D at its peak. A whopping 73% of its total box-office came from 3D revenues. But after subpar conversions on CLASH OF THE TITANS and ALICE IN WONDERLAND there was a clear backlash amongst audiences and 3D revenue decreased steadily as the year went on with DESPICABLE ME bringing in only 45% of its revenue from 3D and CATS AND DOGS 2 being the lowest grossing 3D movie to date in the modern RealD/IMAX era.

MACGRUBER - Plenty of movies underperformed this summer. JONAH HEX, SCOTT PILGRIM, PIRANHA 3D... but when you're one of the first movies of the summer to really underperform, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Notice I didn't say the film bombed. I'd only say that if a movie was both a critical and commercial disaster. But while audiences never really found MACGRUBER, a very large chunk of the people who did, wound up loving it. Sadly the stigma of the "SNL movie" kept some people away from a movie they may have otherwise enjoyed. While it fizzled out fairly quickly in theaters, it may very well find new life on DVD.

Tom Cruise - I would never count out Tom Cruise. But that's not stopping people from trying to count out Tom Cruise. KNIGHT & DAY, his summer action film with Cameron Diaz, was Fox's big summer tentpole movie. Except it didn't perform like a Tom Cruise summer action film should. Immediately the nay sayers began crowing that Cruise was finished and Paramount wanted to hedge their bets on the upcoming fourth MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film. So he might be a loser in the court of public opinion but I wouldn't be surprised at all to have him listed next year among the winners.

M. Night Shyamalan - Sadly it feels like you've could've put M. Night Shyamalan on this list for his past few movies. LADY IN THE WATER, THE HAPPENING and now THE LAST AIRBENDER were all critical disappointments with critics and audiences perhaps agreeing that the latter was the final straw. When the trailer for the upcoming Universal horror film DEVIL, which Shyamalan produced, began screening this summer audiences began howling with laughter and cat-calling when Night's name appeared on screen.

Megan Fox - One of the biggest flops of the summer was the Warner Bros. adaptation of DC Comics' JONAH HEX. It was the first foray into the superhero genre for Josh Brolin but while the Oscar nominee may escape unscathed, his co-star Megan Fox is already suffering the fallout. With JENNIFER'S BODY also disappointing, Fox's last two films have hurt her clout as audience surveys have revealed women don't like her and men aren't interested in her acting. To add insult to injury, Michael Bay wrote her character out of TRANSFORMERS 3 and replaced her with a Victoria's Secret model.

This summer was a bit blah for me personally. In 2008, I saw Dark Knight three times in theaters, and had a blast with Tropic Thunder, stupid as it was. Then last year around this time, I became instantly enamoured with Inglourious Basterds. This year, I found myself completely underwhelmed by stuff like Toy Story 3 and Scott Pilgrim (I know, I know..."How DARE she.") Well, there's always the holiday season...

so every single movie other than Piranha and Scott Pilgrim are judged a winner or loser primarily on Box Office performance (except for Last Airbender, but it's disastrous quality is understandably a loser for for M. Knight), and then you claim that you don't get a check so you are judging these movies as winners and loser based on performance? do you not even understand the what you wrote for every other movie? for crying out loud.

did you actually not see the hypocrisy in your own

At first I thought I was going to hate this summer and didn't think I was going to enjoy it. I was surprised at all the films I liked and all the ones I loved. I liked the A Team, Knight and Day,Expendables and Iron Man. I loved Predators, Toy Story, Inception, Piranha, and Scott Pilgrim. All in all worthy summer. Not as good as last years though!

This was a pretty shitty and underwhelming summer for movies in my opinion. I absolutely loved Inception and really enjoyed Toy Story 3 but that was.. it. There were a bunch of other solid movies but compared to the summer movies of years past they weren't anything special. Maybe it's because last year spoiled me with so many fantastic movies like Star Trek, Up, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, Harry Potter, Inglorious Basterds, and District 9. Compared to last year's crop.. this year fell

Again.. I'm not saying that any of those other films were bad, and I enjoyed them.. but I just wasn't as into the summer movie season this year as I was in years past.

Nice list. I can agree on most of those items. As for megan fox, she needs to swallow her pride, call playboy or penthouse, and do a pictorial that shows why people should keep an interest in her. If not than I think her career is gonna end up like plenty of other chicks out there in hollywood that fade away over time.

Great list! Scott Pilgrim will hopefully get the respect it deserves when it comes out on bluray. It just got lost in the summer shuffle. If it came out last weekend, Takers wouldn't be number 1 right now.

It was a great summer for movies. My high points include Iron Man 2, Toy Story 3, Inception, Despicable Me, Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Splice, Dinner For Smucks, and The Kids Are Alright. Low points include Grown Ups.

Next summer should be great with all the comic book movies coming out.

Nadir vs. Zenith

Yes, I'm going to be one of "those" people. Not to be an ass, just to help out because I appreciate it when people point such things out to me.

I believe you meant to say "The hype reached its zenith with AVATAR." Zenith being the highest point, nadir being the lowest.

A team??

The movie was expected to be a hit and a new saga for FOX. Two big names Neeson & Cooper, a PG-13 rating, +100 million budget, hype... and EXPENDABLES kick the A TEAM asssss!!! With this and KNIGHT & DAY FOX had two flops this summer. A TEAM was one of the summer's losers.

Sorry to be in the minority, but...

"Inception" was one of the worst movies of the summer.

A great cast, but got boggled down by overblown special effects, a confusion story (with extra layers to add to more confusion), and overblown direction by Nolan. I can't believe this movie caught on like wildfire.

I agree, to the most part!

This year jad definately been the year of hype quickly turned to to disappointment. For me anyways i found toy story 3, scott pilgrim and pirahna very disappointing. Toy story i just think my expectations were so high that they couldnt match it and while its not crap and i would see it again its just sad that i dont find pixars recent movies as good as there earlier works. Scott pilgrim for me s justr awful and was everything a film shouldnt be the whole pee bar and things appearing on the

Pirahna was fun and it had its moments but it just wasnt amazing and the 3d has to be one of the worst things ever i managed to miss clash of the titans and alice 3d but if they were as bad as this then thank god i did miss them

Shyamalan No Loser

Thoughtful list. Agreed on everything except Shyamalan. I think he's moving in the right direction, creatively, and the fact that his movie made $130 million shows postive movement on the financial side, too. I'd say with his very entertaining The Last Airbender, and for finally sticking up for himself, M. Night was a winner this year.

I AGREE ...

... tops of the summer: 1. Inception( Nolan just can't dissapoint). 2. Piranha 3D (horror fan's really should appriciate this remake) 3. Toy Story 3 (yey for Pixar). 4. Despicable Me (or How gru Stole The Moon). 5.The Karate Kid (ain't best around, but is still among best around) 6. Iron Man 2 ("just keep 'em comin' ...") 7. Predators (Rodriguez is the man) 8. Centurion (underrated, Neil Marshall is on the way to become John Carpenter of the 21st century) dissapointments: 1. Robin Hood

The Last Airbender (of How Shymalan finally hit rock bottom) 2.Killers (boring as hell, and not funny at all) 3.Marma-puke Didn't watch: Cats And Dogs 2 (and won't), Jonah Hex. So, how many days until Thor premiere? :D

Last Airbender entertaining?

Wow it's incredible how the same film can be viewed differently. For the record I thought it was pants crappingly bad and I'd take Vampires Suck over Shyamalan's shitfest any day.

I still hope 2010 will end on a high note with Social Network, Black Swan and hopefully the new Malick

Night wins

Not fair to claim M Night a loser. If we can say, hey, internet didn't help Scott Pilgrim make money, we can also say it didn't hurt Airbender. A sequel is coming, it made 100k. That smells of win. I love Scott Pilgrim. Its a loser. I loathe Night since after Signs, but he won. Shame on you.

Shamalama-ding-dong rocks

I haven't seen The Last Airbender, and don't plan to. However, I still think M. Night is a great director. His stories are original, and make you think. It's funny how people slam his films as crap, and then complain about all of the remakes, reboots, and retards being released in cinemas today.

Let's salute the original guys (Nolan kicked ass with Inception) and return cinema back to what it should - a place for your imagination to be expanded.

I liked The Happening. It was like an updated The Birds. A friend of mine downloaded Lady in the Water and gave a copy to me on CD but -if I'm not mistaken- it's just another mermaid story, right? I didn't watch it.

I did think Lady in the Water was decent though.

MacGruber was terrible. For some reason I keep quoting the moving, so maybe it'll rub off on me. But it was lacking laughter all around.

And Scott Pilgrim a winner? What a joke.

Huh?

It would have made more sense to tell us which films were profitable as opposed to which films had the highest gross. Piranha 3D would be a winner because it was profitable but Scott Pilgram was a loser because it has yet to make back all the money that was spent on making it.

Why All The Blame

First off, I am a little confused. You start off talking about how much this or that movie made, which made a "winner", but then talk about two films that did just meh, or worse, and declare them winners. Don't get me wrong, I loved both films and would be surprised if they aren't on my year end best of list, but why not just take one route or the other? It sends bizarre and wrong signals trying to do it both ways.

Second, why is most of the failure of "Jonah Hex" being pinned on Megan Fox?

Second, why is most of the failure of "Jonah Hex" being pinned on Megan Fox? She's in the movie for maybe 12 minutes (yes, I saw it, and it wasn't too shabby). Why aren't more people blaming the actual stars, Brolin and Malkovich? They are the only ones in the film with more than 15 minutes of screen time. Or why not blame the studio that scrapped the film the duo of awesome Nevildine/ Taylor planned and went with a guy who's sole directing credit was a family CGI film, then did virtually no marketing for the end product? I honestly don't understand why everyone is blaming someone for the failure of a movie that they are very third-tiered in.
