The Wolverine will be bloodier and unrated for Blu-ray and DVD

2 years agoby:

The Wolverine

Do you know what's been missing from films featuring Wolverine? Violence. Oh, there's scenes of Wolverine using his claws or kicking and punching, but never to the degree that fans have been dying to see. THE WOLVERINE might be grittier, however it probably still isn't at the level that most fans want. After all it is PG-13.

In an interview with Digital Spy, director James Mangold made this fanboy very happy by announcing that when THE WOLVERINE hits Blu-ray there will be an unrated director's cut. This part of the interview is when Mangold was asked if there were any scenes he had to cut from his upcoming film that might make it to Blu-ray and DVD:

I'm very happy with the cut, and the studio was very generous in terms of letting me finish the movie as I wanted, but I do think we will have a slightly more violent version... let's say an unrated, a bloodier version. There's about ten or 12 minutes of scenes that I'd love people to see, that we'll produce some kind of longer version of the movie at some point on Blu-ray or whatever. There's another great scene with Hiro Sanada and a much more elaborate battle with ninjas from the third act that is a pretty huge battle sequence that you'll see.

This doesn't mean that Logan will be decapitating people left and right, but we could see a bit more blood on his claws by the time the film has a home release. If THE WOLVERINE sucks, a bit of red isn't going to help much but if the movie turns out as good as early reviews claim it is, an unrated version of THE WOLVERINE could be phenomenal.

THE WOLVERINE is in theaters Friday!

Extra Tidbit: Remember when Christian Bale was talking about wanting to do an "adult" Batman movie? Can you imagine how Nolan's series would have turned out if the films were rated R?

I don't feel like going to the theater to see this.

I'll wait for the blu-ray. Still hope this movie does well.

That is awesome. The first goal should always be to make a good movie, no matter what the rating ends up being. The fact that we get a few extra scenes of R-rated Wolverine is just icing on the cake. I don't NEED this movie to be r-rated, but it's cool to have that option on blu-ray. Honestly if a PG-13 or R rating is what you base your decision on for seeing this film in theaters, you're not much of a fan.

Maybe he should've saved this revelation til a couple of weeks after the movie was out - some folks will be convinced to wait for the extended release instead of watching the 'tamer' version in cinemas.

I just saw the movie!

Hey guys, I just saw the movie here in Brazil in a movie session just for the press. Let me say that this latest movie is a HUGE improvement from that shit "Origins". Finally we have blood on Wolvie's claws, Mariko looks hot, and we even get a few "shits" and 1 "fuck off" on that movie! Finally the mother**** goes beserk!

And yeah, he kills a LOT of people!

Is it really too much to ask just to see Wolverine make a mess out of people, blood and all? I suppose so..

It's a "have your cake and eat it too" type deal. Fox would likely never take a risk with an R-rated movie for a character as popular as Wolverine and yes, while Wolverine is violent, I honestly think a PG-13 is alright. Maybe not ideal, but alright. I'm glad we will get to see slightly rawer footage for the video release, I wouldn't want the theatrical one to be rated R as it would exclude a lot of younger fans who love this character.

Two scenes in the trailer looked like Wolvie has blood on his hands, but I'm happy we'll get more of what us fans want on the dvd.

I shall see both the theatrical and Blu-Ray versions of The Wolverine. I have not seen the movie yet, but I am already a huge fan of the film. However, slimbo's post raises a concern. How many moviefans will skip The Wolverine knowing that an unrated "better" version arrives with its DVD release? Perhaps, a few. Perhaps, many.
If a good superhero film, I just want The Wolverine to be successful so that we fans get Savage Wolverine or Wolverine and the X-Men films in the future.

Was it the shitty special effects that made you a huge fan without seeing it?

R-rated movies don't make money. Sure, some will argue that the R-rated Conjuring opened higher than the PG-13 RIPD and RED 2 combined. But you can use facts and reality to back-up any argument.

I was really wanting this one to be rated R. I know they kicked around the idea, but ultimately went with the typical summer blockbuster formula. There is the idea that they didnt want to isolate the audience and leave a certain group of fans out, but I say there's 4 other PG-13 Wolverine movies that group can go watch. This news just makes me want to wait for the DVD release than go watch a watered down chopped up version
