The women of Star Wars lead the Forces of Destiny animated micro-series

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Now that Star Wars Celebration has officially gotten underway, we can expect to be inundated with a slew of STAR WARS news, as well as, hopefully, our first real look at STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI. Meanwhile, Disney and Lucasfilm have announced a new animated micro-series which will celebrate the women of the STAR WARS franchise. Star Wars: Forces of Destiny will launch in July with a series of animated shorts on Disney YouTube which will explore all-new adventures of characters like Princess Leia, Rey, Ahsoka Tano and more.

Check out a first look at the series below as well as some images!

The animation style isn't doing much to impress me unfortunately, as I can't help but think that this would have been a perfect moment to bring Genndy Tartakovsky back into the STAR WARS family. After all, the man has already shown that he can deliver some kick ass micro-episodes with Star Wars: Clone Wars. Oh well. A two-part TV special will air on the Disney Channel this fall and will be followed by eight additional shorts. The episodes will be around 2-3 minutes in length and will feature the voice talents of Daisy Ridley (Rey), Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso), Tiya Sircar (Sabine Wren), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano) as well as Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), who will also be narrating the series.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had this to say:

Star Wars Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity. We’re thrilled that so many of the original actors are reprising their roles in these shorts which capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are. It is a fun new way for people to experience Star Wars.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny will apparently remain true to the STAR WARS canon, showing how choices both big and small ultimately shape the destinies of beloved characters. The series will also be followed by a new line of STAR WARS products, including figures, books, apparel, bedding and much more. Of course it will.
