The X-Men: First Class cast grows and grows -- how about January Jones, Zoe Kravitz and more?

08.17.2010

If X-MEN 3 and WOLVERINE just didn't have enough extra mutant characters for you, then you're just gonna love X-MEN: FIRST CLASS -- at this point it would almost be easier to list who's not in it.

But what the hell, now "Mad Men" woman January Jones is in the thing, apparently playing telepath Emma Frost (aka the White Queen). This was a role previously linked to curvaceous Alice Eve (SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE), who was seemingly mutated right off the project. But director Matthew Vaughn is also obviously jettisoning the character as she was established in WOLVERINE (see below), so whatever.

Zoe Kravitz (the fine product of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet) is also now among the lengthy list of mutant students, playing Angel. This is obviously the movie variation of Grant Morrison's buglike character rather than the traditional handsome flyer Warren Worthington III. (Original comic team members Cyclops and Jean Grey are also nowhere to be found, as yet.)

Also newly added to the Fox movie are Bill Milner as a young Magneto and Morgan Lily as young Mystique. The cast already includes Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Xavier), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Caleb Landry Jones (Banshee), Lucas Till (Havok), Edi Gathegi (Darwin), Jason Flemyng (Azazel), Rose Byrne (Moira McTaggert), Oliver Platt (Man in Black) and Kevin Bacon (undisclosed villain).

They will likely soon be joined by Dexter Fletcher, Rade Serbedzija, Robert Davi, Emily Mortimer, Al Leong, Denis Leary, Holly Hunter, Googy Gress, Thomas Kretschmann, Bob Gunton, Michael Sheen, Clint Howard, Ethan Suplee, MC Gainey, your weird cousin Ned, and a billboard of Claudia Schiffer. Because why not.

There are officially way too many damn mutants in this thing. How does anyone expect this to be good when they haven't shot frame one and it's out next June?

times i've said this before, but let me reiterate...fuck you fox for messin this up, fuck you singer for fucking up a good thing and finally fuck you marvel for not making an offer for the rights, it's your title you would have best known what to do with it. now we have this piece of shit waste of film under the guise of an X-MEN movie.

so theyre having younger versions of the younger version of Mystique and Magneto? sounds like an origin of an origin, maybe flashback scenes? Not sure but I have faith in Vaughn/Singer!

Same mistake as 3 already

This is going to try to do too much and show off too many mutants. So don't expect any character development or a decent story.

Well, I think its pretty obvious now...

...that this film is not a reboot, but indeed, a prequel to the other X-men films, which really REALLY makes me sad. Here they had the perfect opportunity to literally start from scratch and tell the X-men mythos the way it was originally intended, but instead, they're going to try to build on the "franchise" that they already ran into the ground.

Damn shame.

Here's the most important part:

Forget this movie, because now that we know that Mad Men breaks long enough to let its cast shoot movies, somebody lock Jon Hamm up as Superman already!

This is the beginning of the end. The thing that kills comic book movies the most is overcasting and trying to include every mutant they feel people will want to see. Rather than crafting a solid story, they figure a high body count is an acceptable trade off.

First Class without Cyclops?

I just hope I actually live to see a movie when the writers/director figure out that Cyclops is not only the first X-Man, but a bona-fide badass who can carry a movie.

Dude is so recognized as a leader that when the Marvel Universe heroes meet up, Cyclops is de-facto in charge. Bounces blasts like a pinball wizard, and can take out most villains with a single glance. Cyclops is hardcore. Stop treating him like the chew-toy, Hollywood.

The funny thing is that I'd probably be pleased with Emily Mortimer in this, she's a great actress. Anyway, I have no problems with Jones, but it is a little disappointing to have Alice Eve replaced. I was looking forward to seeing her in this.

My weird cousin Ned would make an excellent Blob. But seriously, this movie is shaping up to be a lot like my wedding. I saw a bunch of people I like for two seconds and didn't remember shit the next morning.

FX DEPARTMENT

If the bulk of the budge goes into the FX dep then this could work!! With so many characters involved, their powers need to be shown! I still hold my breath! Unless your name is JC, Fox tense to do things in a cheap way! (BTW Avatar cost 400million to make)

I have no faith in this. I want it to work but this just sounds like a mess. I hope Fox loses the rights to this somehow so that Marvel can finally put out some great X-men movies.

Sounds like a lot of mutantes, but Vaughn has made films with loads of characters before. And he makes it work perfectly. Can't wait to see a smart Xmen film.

Wonder how much of the budget is in Actors Paychecks?

I can't believe how big the cast has gotten. Isn't it usually a bad idea to have to many people involved in anything. For example when you see more than 3 names in writing credits 99 times out of 100 the film is going to suck. It sounds like they are just throwing people in to see which characters people like or identify best so they can spin it off. Actually sounds like a smart idea, whether it makes a good film or not we will see. Can't beat the cast. Just imagine how many less degrees

Mad Men tears

Jesus, that happened on the show like a year ago -- way past the spoiler statute of limitations, as far as I'm concerned (and Deadline, who also mentioned it). Catching up on shows is your own responsibility, people.

Did you also know that Leia is Luke's sister and Bruce Willis was a ghost the whole time? Oops, sorry.

Seriously?

I am about to launch my first internet rant ever.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that a so called entertainment 'journalist', if that what the writers here at joblo consider themselves to be, could go so far as to describe January Jones as "Draper-Divorcee".

As if just putting in her name is not enough for us to figure it out, you go right ahead and blow a major plot point in a show, much more important than this film will ever be, that some of us I.E. this pissed off writer,

This reminds me of the time I was browsing through the channels and I happened to come across a piece about the show Dexter on E! When they where interviewing a major character in the show, I won't say who because I'm not an idiot, the interviewer goes so far as to ask said character "What will you do know that they have killed off your character" I mean seriously...What the f**k? Keep in mind this was on the day after the shows season finally.

I think as writers in a forum such as this you could try and use just a tad bit of discretion and some god-damn common sense.

Thanks for assuming all of us had seen past season 2 of Mad Men. Is it too much to ask that people think before they write two words that could potentialy ruin over 12 hours of television viewing for someone.

Great choice for Emma Frost but i'm giving it a negative border cause that spoiler REALLY pissed me off.

Angel is a girl now?

If they are changing any races or genders in this movie, I'm not seeing it. I can't stand that shit, it doesn't improve the story whatsoever. Nick Fury is acceptable because in the Ultimate Universe, because he looks like Sam Jackson. Angel, in both universes, is a blond guy. Fuck this movie.

Are people forgetting something?

They keep saying this movie is crowded with characters when only 12 characters have been cast, 5 of which have already made an appearance in the previous X-Men films. And to say the least, all the characters that have been casted aren't completely random or off the wall. Also, this is being directed by Vaughn and produced by Singer.

So this is a reboot, not a prequel? Does it even matter any more? Does anyone care? I feel like they are just making things up as they go along. And I'd actually prefer Alice Eve as Frost, shame that didn't work out. I'll watch this, but I really can't get excited about an X-men movie without most of my favorite x-men in it (nighcrawler, gambit, wolverine, rouge, etc).
