UPDATE: X-Men to appear in a scene during The Amazing Spider-man 2 credits

Apr. 17, 2014by: Alex Maidy

UPDATE: The X-MEN scene is now explained! According to Variety, Sony is featuring the X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST scene due to contractual obligations between the studio's indie banner, Fox Searchlight, and director Marc Webb. Webb was contracted for a second film after (500) DAYS OF SUMMER which he left to helm THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and it's sequels. To allow Webb out of the deal for a second film, Sony was required to advertise Fox's mutant sequel for free. So there goes any hope of a cross-over being teased.

Yes, you read that headline correctly. During the credits for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 there will be a stinger sequence featuring the X-MEN. But, before you get yourself so excited at the prospect of these Marvel characters crossing over into each other's universes you should know that the sequence in question is actually a scene excerpted from Bryan Singer's upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST rather than a tie-in created specifically for Marc Webb's film.

There does not appear to be any explanation why the X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST scene is being attached to international reels of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, but Empire is reporting that the scene in question is teased in the DAYS OF FUTURE PAST trailer where Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique, along with Havok and Toad, battle William Stryker and a squad of soldiers. ScreenCrush has confirmed that the American release of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 will also feature the scene.

This is fairly substantial news in that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST are being released by rival studios. The two films are being released less than three weeks apart from each other, so the rationale may not be to build buzz for one another's films. Maybe 20th Century Fox and Sony have put aside their competitive nature in a combined bid to finally see if they can compete with Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, Spider-man, The X-Men, and The Fantastic Four all crossed over with one another frequently in the pages of Marvel Comics. Maybe this is a sign of big things to come.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014 while X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST hits on May 23, 2014.

It is possible general audiences will be confused by this and praise the scene for combining the 2 comic movie worlds, which then could make Fox and Sony think differently about joining forces. Really it's the only thing they could do to not be in Marvel/Disneys shaddow.

True. You're right, we'll get to see something that no one else will be able to see unless they see the movie. My gripe is that I like it when they allude something to the next installment for the franchise (Spider-Man) and it sounds like there won't be anything for it.

If it were infact a crossover then I'd be poping a chub but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Only reason to see TAS2 now is the X-Men stinger...

Woot, finally a real reason to see TAS2. A chance to see a clip of DoFP on the big screen.

Don't get your hopes up

It's because Marc Webb (director) has a contract with Fox and the only way they would let him do this for Sony is by putting this clip at the end of spider man.

It's not a crossover/tie-in, just a contractual requirement. Stand down rumourmongers!

Sounds like they could have used any teaser scene for any of their upcoming movies then. But because it's X-Men everyone goes nuts speculating.
Really don't see the appeal of a shared universe anyway. Why would their paths cross? Spidey and X-Men are just too different. There were some Wolverine and Spidey team-ups but those were just like any potential movie, a cash grab. The only team-up I'd like to see is Spidey and Daredevil but that's never going to happen.

How is this not a spoiler? If a month ago an article read "Quicksilver and Scarlett witch to appear in Captain America credits" people would have lost their shit. Thanks Maidy, don't quit your day job (which I hope is not writing articles for this site)

what the fuck?!

If people want to know what the end sequence is, then they'll click the damn link to find out! This would have been a fantastic suprise. Why put the spoiler right in the main link? Whats the point of even clicking to read the story if the link already tells you everything?

Can we be adults about this?

If this information isn't part of the marketing for the film, it is a spoiler in my eyes. The gravity of spoiling the scene in your news title isn't as heavy as, the ending of the film, but it still holds weight. Any logical film critic or webmaster would know this. I find it disrespectful that a writer here is making waves against his own readers.

I would've preferred not knowing about this scene, regardless of its content. Coming out of Peter's world into the X-universe would've linked

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble..but..

"The reason, Variety has learned, is that Spider-Man director Marc Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight to helm another film following 2009′s 500 (Days) of Summer. After The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, Webbs negotiations briefly stalled with Sony as he was caught in a tug-of-war with Fox. Eventually, Fox agreed to allow Webb to direct Sonys Spider-Man sequel, but only if Sony would promote its X-Men film for free." [link]

Oh how awesome would it be if it indeed was a crossover scene. That'd be the only way for Fox and Sony to compete with Disney's Marvel cinematic universe.

Thumbs down to the people saying the headline is a spoiler.

So it's a spoiler because it reveals that a movie that has nothing to do with the Spider-Man movie will be shown in the credits???....I wish I didn't know what movie it was. Oh the horror!...rme

You put something that happens at the very end of the movie IN THE TITLE. How is this not a spoiler? I purposely don't read your articles with end credits because I like to be surprised. I love this website and want to keep enjoying it so please don't do this.

Spoiler in the title

Hey guys... not to be a dick, I hate when people troll, but that headline is kind of a huge spoiler for the end credits scene... I mean if I saw the article was just about an end credits scene for the movie I wouldn't have read it, but it gives the big news away in the title... Just saying its something I wouldve stayed away from if I could have avoided it

I completely agree. I'd rather not know this. What's funny is that this is usually the part where someone says "If you didn't want spoilers, you shoulda stayed off the internet!" or something like that. I never seek out spoilers, but they too often show up in headlines when I wasn't even reading about whatever I tried to stay away from.

From the other comments, it seems that the scene doesnt really enter spoiler territory because its kinda unrelated to the Spiderman universe. If it had been some sorta tie in for a cross-studio comic collaboration, then I would have to agree with you.

I have to agree that it is a spoiler. I will no longer be surprised to see the xmen in the end credits of Spider-Man, therefor that makes it a spoiler.

Granted I probably would've read it anyway had it been more subtle but never the less I have to agree that it IS a spoiler.

Saw it last night.

I was expecting the post-credits scene some sites spoiled a while ago. Then, mid-credits.... Bam. A scene inside a military tent, I was like "What the hell?" And them Mystique shows up.
It is not connected at all, it is just a scene from the new movie inserted into the credit roll and although it was an ok scene, it felt so out of place that it left a bad taste in our mouths.
Interesting marketing scheme. They know more Marvel fans are expecting scenes during the credits and they used it for

How about that?!

Imagine if those people sitting at the top of SONY and FOX actually agreed to work together and create a joint Universe that could actually compete with Marvel/Disney and DC/Warner? But remember this is Hollywood. It's about who can make the most money, not what we want! This is as far as it's going to go.

Gotta agree with just about everyone else here...makes no sense unless they plan on merging their "universes". At this point I wouldn't even give them credit for having a "universe" such as Marvel; it's county at best. BUT I'm holing they're lying to us and plan on introducing Spidey into the XMEN world.

Well considering the folks at Sony have just said they would not share with Marvel/Disney unless they had run out of inspiration, it would seem to be a contradiction to then share with Fox. I can't see it somehow.

So they're going to have a clip for Days of Future Past in the end credits for AS2 and these characters and story arcs will have no connection to either universe?

Kind of stupid if you ask me. But like someone said below, what a cocktease to read the headline and have the two franchises not connected to one another.
