These 19 films were submitted for Best Animated Feature Oscar

Nov. 5, 2013by:

ANIMATED DEATHMATCH! Nineteen will enter and five will be left to compete for the title of "Best Animated Film" for the 86th Academy Awards.

Basically every big animated movie that came out this year was nominated. Can I nominate DRAGONBALL Z: BATTLE OF THE GODS? No? Fine.

Here are the lucky 19:

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2

THE CROODS

DESPICABLE ME 2

EPIC

ERNEST AND CELESTINE

THE FAKE

FREE BIRDS

FROZEN

KHUMBA

THE LEGEND OF SARILA

A LETTER TO MOMO

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

O APOSTOLO

PLANES

PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA THE MOVIE- REBELLION

RIO: 2096 A STORY OF LOVE AND FURY

THE SMURFS 2

TURBO

THE WIND RISES

Some of the titles I am not as familiar with so it would be unfair for me to pick out a winner. That said, I'm going to predict with that submission omitted. Personally, I see it going to MONSTERS UNIVERSITY. The film picked up like there was no 12-year gap between installments. We were introduced to a new group of characters that were just as enjoyable as the ones from the first. Not to mention it kicks up major nostalgia. Sure there's no Boo running around being adorable, but we got to see Mike Wazowski with braces.

SMURFS 2 doesn't even go here.

Wow. Lot of love for The Croods. I'm officially checking it out now.

If The Smurfs 2 are in there because of having a lot of CGI characters.....

... shouldn't The Hobbit and about 20% of the blockbusters be in that list as well?

Go Japan!

Both "The Wind Rises" and "A Letter to Momo" put most other films on the list (that have been released yet obviously) to shame. It's an absurdity that any given year if Pixar doesn't put out a sizable effort that a film from Japan doesn't take the award. The sheer number of quality feature length animated films coming out of Japan every year is staggering in relation to the American market.

I just hope that the controversy surrounding "The Wind Rises" doesn't hurt it's chances too much

I just hope that the controversy surrounding "The Wind Rises" doesn't hurt it's chances too much because it is a truly remarkable and masterfully executed film that far exceeds what most audience members in the US would expect of even a live action period drama. Hopefully the weight of being Miyazaki's 'last film' (again) might help its chances. However, something tells me we'll have to settle again with something like Planes bumping quality work out of the running... :-(

Gotta agree with jojothewonderdo. This year has yet to give us a ParaNorman, a Wreck-It Ralph or a Rise of the Guardians.

I'm actually surprised that Puella Magi Madoka Magica Rebellion is in there. I read a review of this anime on Kotaku and the story is kind of dark. It would also be confusing to watch unless you've seen the original anime series.

"Animated" doesn't mean it has to be a children's movie.

Well Frozen isn't out yet, so obviously no one can give a valid opinion on it. But if it is as good as Tangled or Wreck-it Ralph, which was robbed last year, then I think Disney might be the one to beat this year.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2? Seriously?!?

I swear... If Monster's University wins I think I'm going to kill someone... in a video game. c|X^{D~
But seriously. The Wind Rises. Please Win. I loved that one. I believe it is definitely the best choice out of the nominations this year. Studio Ghibli Forever! c|:^{D~

Hell yeah...The Croods!

It was totally original and totally entertaining...pulled at the heart strings, too. Makes you think about human behavior, the family dynamic, evolution, father/daughter relationships, dealing with hardship, and even death....not to mention absolutely stunning visuals. Deserves it outright. A clever and hilarious offering from Dreamworks. In fact, it's the kind of movie that reaffirms one's faith in an animation studio. The Croods for the win!

The Croods

I agree with Cochise. The Croods should win best animated feature. It's definitely my favorite animated film of the year along with Despicable Me 2.

The Croods!

needs to win, definitely deserves it -- loved it! My favourite animated movie in years... Other than that I just want to see Despicable Me 2 get a nom and otherwise meh on the animated movie front this year. Cloudy 2 was alright but disappointing. Same with Monsters 2 (though liked that one even less myself).

Also yeahhhh... +1 to the WTF to the Smurfs 2 getting an animated nod... did Hop get an animated nod? whaaat... :S

The Smurfs 2? Aren't there live action characters? I thought that disqualifies them?

I know right...it should disqualify it, at least. No worries though. There's NO WAY it gets nominated.
