These are the 10 remaining contenders in the VFX Oscar race

01.05.2012

Do you think CAPTAIN AMERICA deserves a shot at the Best VFX Oscar this year for its fairly impressive depiction of a small and wimpy Chris Evans? Or will the rest of the film's pretty sub-par effects take it out of contention?

I guess similar questions could be lobbed at the rest of the remaining contenders for this year's VFX Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the following films, five of which will go on to be the official Oscar nominees for the year:

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - PART 2
HUGO
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES
REAL STEEL
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON
THE TREE OF LIFE
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

So who's out? Who are your faves and who do you just not give a shit about? My money's on RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES should Andy Serkis himself not get some sort of specific recognition, be it through a Supporting Actor nod or some special award.

'Apes' deserves it for just being so damn convincing. Some directors just really know how to use CGI effectively and in a timeless fashion.

Nostalgic aside, I wonder what would happen if someone put the money into building models and wire effects. Look at how well the effects in Empire Strikes Back hold up today. Can't help but wonder what you could do with modern technology and technique.

CGI is probably cheaper, faster and easier to do. But I agree, even some really cool classic stunts would never be retried today but instead be cgi. Thinking mainly on some bond stunts like the car flying over the bridge and twisting 360 degrees in man with golden gun. They did that for real.

My Picks

Captain America (wimpy Evans looked amazing)

ROTPOTA (Ceasar is a fantastic creation)

TF3 (Awful film, good effects though)

Real Steel (All the robots had weight and looked real)

Harry Potter 7, Part 2

IMO, 'X-Men: First Class' & 'POTC 4' had some really bad effects.

"Tintin" is considered an animated movie, and is thusly not eligible for consideration here.

No Muppets?

Just curious, but it seems like 'Best Visual Effects' has come to mean in the present day 'Best CGI' - I can't think why the puppetry work on The Muppets shouldn't be counted as a visual effect. Anyone?

(That said, I'm not saying it should win, ROTPOTA and The Tree of Life both had amazing effects work. But just reckon people only look at CGI work for the award these days).

Um, the muppets are just too obvious looking no matter how you look at them. VFX don't always have to dazzle you; they can also be the ones you barely notice.
Also VFX don't necessarily have to be done with CGI e.g. in LOTR: Fellowship; they used good ol' fashion camera perspective shots when Gandalf and Frodo were together in the same frame. No CGI was used to Shrink/Enlarge any of the characters. It was just a matter of spacing them apart to create the illusion.

So heres what I think.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER - good movie, but doesn't really deserve to be in the oscars.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - PART 2 - YAWNNNNNNNNNNNN, IDK why this is even here either.

HUGO - didn't see it, prob will check it out on DVD. But the effects looked decent. Only reason this is here is because it's a martin (however you spell his last name) film.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL -the effects and action in this movie were nuts I wouldn't mine seeing this win,

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES - yet again why would you pick this stupid movie, oh wait it has johnny depp. YAWNNNNNN.

REAL STEEL -oh this was that robot movie with hugh jackman. WHo gives a fuck. Why is this even here?????

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - This has to win in all honest truth. This just has win, the effects were amazing, the apes looked so real. And plus andy needs an oscar for this. For sure :)

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON - I wouldn't mine seeing this win either, the effects to me in this one were better then all two esp two LOL I liked two for what it was though.

THE TREE OF LIFE - I think this movie is on my Q in netflix I have to check and watch.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS - I deft wouldn't mine seeing this win either this was by far the best x-men movie made. PERIOD.

If I had to narrow it down to five, it would be:

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Captain America: The First Avenger
Tree of Life
Hugo

Either you never saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes, or its a testament to the quality of the work that you never noticed that every single ape in the movie is CGI. There was not a single shot of live action apes in that movie.

Looked like a bunch of CGI monkeys to me. But apparently that's just me, and that's ok.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes will win easily. There is no other film that relied on its visual effects so completely.

Joe Letteri at WETA had better upgrade his award cabinet after Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the two Hobbit films drop.

The Problem with "planet" is that while they seem to have perfected making CGI apes, thats all they did. Movies like Harry Potter and X-men used every trick in the book when it comes to special effects.

Even though I thought the job done to wimpify Evans in Captain America was impressive, I imagine it will be hard for anyone to compete against Harry Potter in this category.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
HUGO
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Though I was impressed of the style with REAL STEEL. As for TREE OF LIFE, that deserves best cinematography instead, hands down.

I still can't get over the fact that Tron: Legacy wasn't nominated last year. Bummer. Still, I hope Captain America win the award. The pre-super soldier Steve Rogers is very convincing.

I think the VFX in ANONYMOUS were really cool. Great London Shots!
Captain America had also great shots.

No Cowboys & Aliens???

Honestly, none of the big movies really had any spectacular effects. Or atleast none left an impact to where I could remember them...
