These gun toting nuns are really creepy in this poster for The Town

Aug. 12, 2010by: Niki Stephens

THE TOWN looks like another flick that Ben Affleck will gain some praise for.

Even though it's only his second directorial effort, I'm thinking that it might top GONE BABY GONE. There's also a chance that I'll view it more than once, because GONE BABY GONE depressed the shit out of me. Just like MYSTIC RIVER did. Although MYSTIC was the winner in the "I'm sadder than shit" race. No, I take that back, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD takes that title.

I'm veering off-topic now. The point is, the movie looks great. +10 points for putting Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner in this film together. Today, Apple debuted a very eerie poster for THE TOWN. You'll recognize the costumes from the film, but in this poster, the effect of them seems to be stronger. "Welcome to the bank robbery capital of America." Thanks for giving me nightmares for two weeks.

Click on the poster to check it out in hi-res, and if you haven't seen the trailer yet, CLICK HERE.

Official Synopsis:

"Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang's latest job, when they briefly took a hostage--bank manager, Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name... and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug....not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path. "

Cool Poster

"+10 points for putting Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner in this film together."

This is what I'm looking forward to the most in this movie. The two are very good and very underrated.

First of all, all of the haters who keep knocking on Ben Affleck should go stuff themselves with some sort of phallic shaped object. Dude's cool.
Second, the trailer looks awesome and so does the poster. But the alligned shots of the actors ruins the impact of the heat packing nuns. I think a less busy, cleaner look would've made for a better poster.
But very much looking forward to it nonetheless.

I am greatly anticipating this film, but this poster is a really big case of "what were they thinking?!" for me. First of all, the Photoshop work is lame and obvious. Second of all, they picked an image that does not immediately evoke bank robbery. It evokes creepy nuns. Once you get past the initial impact, you realize they are holding automatic weapons. But honestly, this is just a silly looking poster, and it's a shame that they couldn't find a more appealing image from the film to use on

I'd prefer a floating head poster over this ridiculousness.

Look at Jon Hamm and tell me that man wasn't born to play Superman.

I'm sure it has promise

but everytime I see marketing for this one I think Point Break/Departed/Heat, and I end up wanting to watch those again instead.

Aww, I thought they were going to be *sexy* gun-toting nuns for some reason.

I have no idea what that says about me.

I'm also pretty stoked about Pete Postlethwaite being in this. Inception aside, I haven't seen the guy in forever.

Two Sublte Complaints

1. Wearing freaky masks/costumes during a robbery? Have we not gotten past this cliche? I made an exception for TDK, but still....knock this shit off (no pun intended).

2. Why oh why does Ben Affleck have to star? One of the things I appreciated most about Gone Baby Gone was that he DIDN'T cast himself, but here is in the lead role. C'mon now, you know Renner should have been lead....

That aside, definitely looks like it could be pretty good. It has my interest.

Well there is a saying that the cheapest actor a director can afford is himself.

Mystic River, Revolutionary Road, and Gone Baby Gone are all awesome. I'd like to add House of Sand and Fog, The Wrestler, Million Dollar Baby and Bridge to Terabithia to the list of Movies That Are Awesome Because They Have Such Dour Endings. Thats a favorite genre of mine.

Also, The Town is looking like a must-see movie. Who knew that Ben would show such a flair for directing, and Casey would be the awesome actor?

This looks amazing but as is the case with most trailers, it gives too much of the story away.

I felt the same way until I recently spoke to someone who saw it - they said much of what seems like major plot reveals in the trailer are from very early scenes in the movie.

I'm actually surprised when movies give away plot points and its all from the first half.
