These two new Skyfall trailers herald Bond's triumphant return to cinemas

07.31.2012

Skyfall 656 gold banner

Every time I see a piece of promotional material for SKYFALL, Bond's return to cinemas shoots straight to the top of my most anticipated list for the remainder of 2012.  Every singly bloody time.  Everyone involved, from the cinematographer to the writers to the director to the actors to the composer, seems to have well and truly nailed it.

Now these trailers hint strongly at some serious shakeups coming to the Bond universe.  I won't spoil it here, but the trailers very explicitly spell out some dramatic story events that will not only rattle every character you see but alter the course of possibility for any Bond films to follow.

How incredible would it to have SKYFALL become a Best Picture nominee? Do you think it's possible?

Of the two trailers you'll find below, the International is my favorite insofar as thematic/aesthetic/tonal structure goes, but at the end of the day they're both superb pieces of promotional cinema.

See you on November 9th, Bond.  I've said it before and I'll say it again - it's good to have you back.

Q: Less of a random killing spree, more of a personal statement.

Silva: Just look at you.  Chasing spies.  England.  MI6.  She sent you after me knowing you're not ready, knowing you would likely die.  Mommy was very bad... The two survivors. This is what she made us.

Bond: Everybody needs a hobby.
Silva: So what's yours?
Bond: Resurrection.

HOLY SHIT! The wait has been torturous and filled with uncertainty, but this looks to be the Bond film that we deserved!

Looks like a winner

Hopefully this will be a fitting film for the 50th Anniversary, although I do remember hoping for the same thing with Die Another Day for the 40th (Christ, has it really been 10 years?). This however, looks to be much more promising; I am hoping they'll finally go back to using a British artist for the theme song, though.

As for the Oscars, the die-hard Bond fan in me would like to think that after 50 years of making these flicks and still keeping folks interested, the Academy would throw them a bone and give the Bond filmmakers some kind of nomination (or even an honorary award) this time around, but my logic tells me that we'll be lucky to get a tribute montage at next year's ceremony, if that.

Action looks great, story seems really interesting, a great cast (including the hot looking Bond girl and menacing antagonist), the introduction of Q and moneypenny, what more can a Bond fan ask for?! I thought Hobbit and Django Unchained would be my most anticipated for the rest of 2012, but this might take the cake.

I join my fellow Schmoes in unanimous praise and excitement for Skyfall.

But being the old stickler that I am; has anyone else noticed the slight audio editing cock-up in the international trailer? Right around the 12 second mark, Ralph Fiennes says "...the identity of every agent...". The word agent comes out really odd, you can tell something was cut out after "every" and before "agent".

I know, I know, what a minute fucking detail to isolate and highlight. But it's a major

Making Quantum of Solace to look like a bad dream.
Is it too late for Sam Mendes to take over World War Z from Marc Forster?

Definitely looks like A+ James Bond entertainment. I'm guessing Bardem is maybe a former MI6 operative?
And what is it that Ralph Fiennes says "There's no shame in..."?

What else can I say...

Hell yes!
That cufflink adjust was indeed, so Bond! Can't wait to see this!
Looks like the end of 2012/2013 is going to be a good year for cinema!

This instantly got me extremely pumped - it's so good to have a slightly better idea of the story at large and to have a better look at all the incredibly stylish shots and action set pieces, as well as the villain, the Bond girls and the new Q! I like the "faking his death" angle - like You Only Live Twice, but probably will be more dramatic. Looking at all those shots of the action scenes, you'd have no idea Sam Mendes isn't a seasoned action director. The Bond movies always have great second

Silva

I'd love if he became a recurring villain. That's what this new Bond needs, someone for Daniel Craig to spar against multiple times. They tried to make Quantum into that, but given the poor reception of QoS, I think they will drop that story strand. Unless Silva turns out to be connected somehow to Quantum, but the producers have already denied that...

Per diems

If Bond was classified as dead, does he still get paid for this period? Will it affect his pension? Why does he never ask these questions?

ElderPredator is right. The Daily Mail would be all over this public service 'excess'. Bond would be named and shamed as a civil service overspend :)

HOLY SCHNIKES

Just epic.
And Bond readjusting his cuff-link after a stunt like that is the most James Bondy thing Daniel Craig has done in his 3 films. Flawless.

Wow, if the actual movie is as good as the trailer, Javier Bardem might be the coolest Bond villain since Sean Bean's Alec villain from GoldenEye.
