Strike Back below!

If you pressed me to make a list of my favorite movies from the 1980s, I'd have to think that John Carpenter's THEY LIVE would be very close to the top. It's just genius on a lot of levels from the classic "I've come here to chew bubblegum" line to the equally classic extended fight scene (that was recreated shot-for-shot in this "South Park"). You knew with a movie this iconic it would eventually get the remake treatment and that day is here. Universal and Strike Entertainment have acquired the remake rights to the film though no writer or director are attached at this point. Universal and Strike are also working on a remake of John Carpenter's THE THING. While you might be skeptical that a film of THEY LIVE's status is being remade, remember that Universal and Strike previously remade another horror classic, DAWN OF THE DEAD, that turned out quite well and launched the career of Zack Snyder.

So all this begs the question, who could possibly fill the shoes of Rowdy Roddy Piper??

Another great movie that will lose all of its appeal with a flashy overdone remake.

We've all seen how Carpenter remakes can generally go. I actually kinda dug Assault on Precinct 13 but I don't like what they did with the story, The Fog is best not mentioned. Then you have a Thing remake and I hope to god this project has been binned but as for this I'm really not sure if this is such a good idea. My money's on a Big Trouble remake, seems stupid right now but give it time....the bastards

You guys need to stop posting news about remakes. It is making me ill.

For all of "They Live"'s explosions and gunshots and kickassery (and its lack of bubblegum), it was almost subtle in its critique of the American government. That is something that our generation is incapable of (see "W"), and so if the remake attempts to be anything more than an action film, it will be...

As far as The Thing goes...oh man.

Carpenter took the skeleton of the already tension-filled original and made something bold and new and truly horrifying. Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" was cool because it really made the thing new. He started with "zombies in a mall" and took it places.

Can you see anyone starting with "shapeshifting alien infiltrates antarctic research base" and taking it anywhere? Anywhere cooler and more exciting than Carpenter did?

Neither can I.

Bad Idea!
'They Live' was an anti-Republican movie in a Republican decade. It would be a shame to ruin the premise with a crappy remake.

Leave it alone and try to make something original!

I think the remake is unnecessary but I agree with TBag that Gerard Butler would be a great choice.

Never seen They Live but The Thing is one of my favorite sci fi-horror movies and it will never be better remade. Why not remake shitty movies like Doom and make those better, they did the same thing with The Hulk.

Remake They Live = good idea

Remake The Thing = blasphemy

The Thing is one my top three favorite sci-fi movies of all time. The only reason to remake a film is to improve on the original. I have showed The Thing to some friends for whatever reason had never seen it and they loved it. I hope I'm wrong but I see this just bein bad.

Bring it on!
No one can replace the Piper, but I'd like to see Gerard Butler in this. I remember this flick and you're right, there was something about it that I really liked. Then again I'm a Carpenter fan, speaking of which what happened to the remake of Escape from NY? Anyone?

I agree that if they must remake this then The Rock is a great choice. Although, I rather they left it alone.

I'm a huge fan of THEY LIVE, so much so I named my action movie website after that line. My amigo and I have thought about a remake for years and even tho he is into doing Pussy-Ass Disney flicks right now, we've always said the ROCK would be a great choice, and they would just have to bring back KEITH DAVID. As for a re-make of THE THING, please don't...

I'm happy they're remaking They Live. I'd rather a sequel to The Thing instead of a remake.

Wow remaking "The Thing"? How many times has a remake been remade?

And no one, I mean no one can fill Hot Rod's shoes. Come to think of it you can't fill Keith David's shoes either.

"You, your fine...her formaldehyde face!"

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand I think it'd be pretty cool, but on the other I think, why do it again? (Which is my point of view for all re-makes). I'm going to shift into "wait and see" mode for now. Although I do like the idea of casting Josh Holloway in the lead.

And THE THING???? They're going to re-make a re-make????? C'mon!

I could see "They Live" getting a decent update, though I still think it's a bad idea. Rock or Josh Holloway are pretty good ideas, maybe the Rock a bit more in keeping with the wrestler/actor thing. Although "The Thing" getting remade?!? Horrible idea, someone needs to get shot in the face for that one....

Such an 80s "off its time" movie - don't think a remake will necessarily translate as well today. That said, here's who should play the lead: Josh "Sawyer" Holloway.

I love this film. Always have since it first came out. I will hold out hope since Carpenter's producing. But if it blows...at least we still have the origina. Ya know, like Halloween.

Why not grab Dwayne Johnson.....he could do it easily.....even Vin Desiel, he needs a hit.

WHAT!?!
i cant say that i think this is totally a bad thing, They Live is one of my all time favorite movies. Todays consumer driven culture is perfect for a remake like this. The biggest and hardest issue would be who to cast, my vote is for Stone Cold Steve Austin, hes a former wrestler like Piper and hes got just enough acting skills to make it (the Condemned wasnt completely terrible). Of course...

Of course Keith David and Roddy Piper would have to have cameos or this thing would be a complete failure.
