Things get crazy in the international trailer for the new Spongebob movie

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

I was late to the Spongebob party as I am about a decade older than the target audience for the show. But, in recent years, I have come to appreciate the completely insane nature of the animated series as well as the hidden jokes that only an adult would understand.

When the first trailer for the new feature film THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER hit a couple of months ago, it looked like everything about the series was going to get bigger, wackier, and CGI for the big screen. I wasn’t sure if it was a good move for fans of Spongebob or another cash grab for the 3D ticket prices. Still, it looked moderately funny. Now, this new international trailer arrives packed with more of the comedy we are accustomed to from the series and more not so subtle drug references.

Again, the superhero element to the film seems to be a big selling point in the trailer and posters for the movie, but I really hope it doesn’t take up the bulk of the screen time. Even the scenes set in “our world” look a little desperate compared to the traditional 2D animated scenes. Either way, I am sure this movie is going to do well when it hits screen during the typically slow winter release of February 6, 2015.
