This description of a trailer for World War Z makes the movie sound downright disturbing

Oct. 16, 2012by:

World War Z book coverWhatever went down (artistically speaking) with WORLD WAR Z seems to have worked, because this description of the trailer shown at a Paramount preview event is downright disturbing and definitely on par with the state of terror I've to which I've always imagined society would descend should zombies ever become a reality.

"The presentation ended on a profoundly high note with a trailer for the adaptation of Max Brooks' zombie novel, WORLD WAR Z. It begins with Brad Pitt's character sitting in traffic with his family. They're busy playing a game when a cop bashes on their window in a panic. Standing near the driver side window, the cop begs Pitt to stay in his vehicle and, soon thereafter, is pummeled by a bus careening out of control.  An explosion erupts and a mass of people race down the city streets. Pitt and his family hop into an abandoned RV and we get a glimpse of the world in madness. Beyond an unusual pair of eyes, we don't get a good look at World War Z's zombies, but the measures the uninfected take to reach safety might further confirm what last year's set footage revealed - that these zombies can run. In the trailer, gigantic hordes of people are scrambling for dear life. They're not just pushing and shoving each other out of the way, rather climbing on top of each other and manically hanging onto a hovering helicopter. In one of the trailer's final shots, there's a mountain of people trying to climb over a wall that must be hundreds of wriggling bodies high. The material is dark and downright horrifying, not only showing what could happen should the undead invade on a physical level, but also reflecting the societal meltdown that would ensue, and the pure chaos we'd be left with. WORLD WAR Z was certainly the crown jewel of the presentation and, based on the footage, looks to be well worth the wait."

Well wow.  Color me impressed, because that does sound f**king fantastic.  Despite all of the behind-the-scenes hullabaloo I was still looking forward to this project, and I am all the more so now.  I'd love to see a harrowing adventure story complete with horror on a grand scale, and I know if anyone can pull that off, it's Brad Pitt.  Hopefully the reshoots are going well (if they aren't already done) and we'll soon get to check out a trailer for ourselves, though after having read that description I'm going to be rather grumpy if the first footage we see skimps on the more controversial imagery.

But what about you? Does the above description restore any confidence that you may have lost?

Angelina Jolie wearing plastic

Pitt is married to Jolie, and we haven't run a nice pic like this of her in a while.  Sigh.  It's a hard life out here on the internet...

Extra Tidbit: Hey Paramount - can you please release even a single promotional image so that I can stop running the same shit over and over (and over and over) again?

Running Zombies

Don't freak out about running zombies and say that its not like that in the book. Because in The Zombie Survival Guide Brooks does talk about how a zombies body once turned is just like its human counterpart. However, since zombies are dead, their muscles can not heal themselves once strained. Basically zombies can run fast at first, but as time goes on they are unable to because of muscle deterioration. I would guess this scene of the running zombies is the first time we see them and they are

Sounds good, but my question is who did you get the description from? There's no mention of that from what I can see in this article. A description is cool, but one that short doesn't do much for us until we see a trailer. Guess time will tell. Also, I'd rather have hordes of shambling walkers like The Walking Dead. There's nothing like masses of slow moving dead to really put a chill down your spine. I really enjoyed the Dawn of The Dead remake, 28 Days Later, and 28 Weeks Later but the dead

Hope this movie turns out epic!

Nothing in that description sounds any more disturbing than anything we get from most zombie movies. It's expected of zombie movies. In fact, it sounds pretty tame in a 'I Am Legend' (remake) kind of way.

Also, they run because these movies all want to be 28 Days Later (which wasn't really zombies to begin with).

Im actually happy the zombies can run. Walking zombies are fine in a small enclosed story where they can be terrifying but i can never ever buy them causing the apocalypse. Especially when every story has some hero taking out 20 of them by himself using a hammer or something yet im suppose to believe entire armies were defeated, it just takes me right out of the story.

yes I read the book and loved it but still thought it was a bit ridiculous.

Wait a minute.

So someone offers a DESCRIPTION of a trailer and suddenly faith in a project is restored? Anyone can cut a Brad Pitt preview trailer with a few minutes of footage and production value (Not to mention the imagery sounds so familiar for the genre.) As for whether the zombie's run or not, who cares. Just let me know if it has a competent script.

I'm hoping this turns out good. For me I'd rather have slow zombies then fast ones; I dont hate fast ones but I prefer slow. The whole style changes when they're fast and it takes the creepy and slow-burn away. One of the reasons the walking dead is awesome is because of the slow zombies.

"...but the measures the uninfected take to reach safety might further confirm what last year's set footage revealed - that these zombies can run."

This doesn't sound like proof positive to me. This person basically interperted the actions of the people trying to get away as somehow implying there were running zombies, but they didn't say they saw that specifically. Having read the book, I would also be disappointed in running zombies. Given that in the book--and a lot of zombie lore--the

Given that in the book--and a lot of zombie lore--the Z's are basically falling apart, and it doesn't take much for them to lose an arm or a leg, it really doesn't make much sense to have them running flat out or jumping about. They are just a mindless wave of creeping appetite and aggression. I hope they stay true to that in the movie, because it could be detrimental.

Fast or Slow?

While I like the sound of the absolute panic involved, since its an accurate portrayal of some of the scenes in the book (the chapter in India with the boats especially), the fast zombies weaken it considerably. Its like giving the Alien a gun. The shambling inevitability of it was what made the book so hopeless and cool. And this focus on Pitt will weaken the story as well. This book was a huge epic covering dozens of lives in all the corners of the globe. Like TDork said, youll miss alot of

Like TDork said, youll miss alot of cool battles and stories if they dont broaden this thing out. i feel sad for anyone who only sees the movie and thinks thats it. This would better be done as a series.

I hate to be a nerd but...

Lost me at fast zombies. I'm not against fast zombies (Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, Zombieland) but If you've read the book, you know it completely destroys half the narrative and much of what made both World War Z and 'Zombie Survival Guide' funny and cool. There will be no 'Raj Singh' formations, no K-teams, no 'lures' or ferals or Lobos or wheelchair bound patrolmen.

I might feel better if it was called anything other than World War Z.

I personally don't mind fast zombies, but I love this debate. My friend and I literally talked for hours about fast vs. slow zombies.

Again, fast zombies are perfectly fine, just not in a World War Z adaptation. Almost the entire Zombie Survival Guide (which World War Z is a direct expansion of) is predicated on the fact that the zedheads are slow, shambling husks you can outrun, lure, or take your time to aim and get a headshot against.

No one's taking on five rushing zombies with a crowbar and coming out on top. No phalanx of infantry grunts is going to land 20,000 headshots in 18 hours while taking zero casualties.

I am still looking forward to this and this reaffirms my faith although I am still a bit weary after all the shit it went through.

Sounds really good. and glad that the dispute didn't hurt the body of the film.

That's good news but lets hope the movie itself won't be an incoherent mess.

It definitely sounds very intriguing. To me it sounds like the movie Contagion but with zombie outbreak.
