Sean Penn is truly a long lost member of The Cure in the clip and image from This Must Be the Place

4 years agoby:

Sean Penn looking a hell of a lot like Robert Smith from The Cure is certainly something to be intrigued by. The only thing we've really gotten out of his next film, THIS MUST BE THE PLACE is set pictures. Today an image (which is at the top) from the film as well as a clip has found its way online.

The film is directed by Paolo Sorrentino and stars Frances McDormand, Judd Hirsch, and Harry Dean Stanton. The plot of the film is pretty wild and actually something original-- unless there's another film about a retired rockstar going after a former Nazi officer that I don't know about. One of my favorite details about this film is that David Byrne and Will Oldham are in charge of the music. In the clip below, I'm fairly confident that Oldham's voice is the one you hear. The film will debut at Cannes next month.

"Cheyenne (Sean Penn) is a wealthy former rock star, now bored and jaded in his retirement in Dublin. He travels to New York to reconcile with his estranged father during his final hours, only to arrive too late. After learning the true extent of his father’s humiliation in Auschwitz at the hands of former SS Officer Aloise Lange, Cheyenne begins a journey across America to track down Lange, who is now hiding out in the US."

I've seen all of Sorrentino's films and Le Conseguenze Dell'Amore is even in my top 10. This man is a beast.

I prefer The Cure but I don't really get the comparison between the two.

Who do you like better, INXS or Metallica?

mid 80s to early 90s cure is the best around.

he's clearly channeling smith... and yet somehow he looks worse. i mean, anymore, smith looks like the bloated corpse of someone who died 4 years ago. it's incredible that penn could pull of looking worse and not actually be dead.

oh, and disintegration is the greatest album in the world. period.

I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

I think I'll go with Talking Heads. The Cure's good, but their songs tend to get stuck in my head in a bad way.

Both are great. The Cure have more songs that have stayed with me over the years though.

WTF?

Penn looks fucking ridiculous. It's like a SNL skit. The movie will probably be good, but Penn looks retarded. Then again so do many aging rock stars I guess.

Extra tidbit: Those bands couldn't be any more different but Talking Heads overall but The Cure has the best album in Disintegration.
