This poster for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit tells us to trust no one

12.31.2013

JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT may look like it's going to be an awesome ride but this poster is a little less than stellar.

Maybe one of my New Year's resolutions should be a more positive frame of mind when dissecting the quality of a poster. I think of the reasons I do this aside from seeing the same boring, vanilla crap over and over again is that ever since I was younger I had movie posters all over my walls. I constantly went to our small town video store to place dibs on the good prints they would receive. Also, my middle school drama teacher would hand his over after keeping them on the classroom walls for so long. Sadly, the majority of them were lost, damaged, or given to other people. I would have an impressive collection if it wasn't for those factors.

That said, I wouldn't mind having a poster that included Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley, and Kenneth Branagh on my wall. This one is my favorite of the bunch so far. My only real gripe is this poster is exactly like the one that was released at the beginning of the month. The only difference is the background and tiny supporting/main character.

Poster released early this month:

JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT hits theaters on January 17, 2014.

"Hey Bill, we need some posters!" "What kind of movie Phil?" "Political action thriller." "Gotcha, how about generic posters 517 and 227-B?" "Those are great! Now slap a couple movie stars on them, preferably ones from the movie, and have them on my assistant's assistant's desk by Tuesday."

I see they've decided to stick with the Star Trek font.

The earlier poster with the maze-like Cherevin emblem was better, but not by much. I like the decision to incorporate that motif into the design but it still does seem generic as all heck to look at. I'm happy to report though that the movie is pretty good. Nothing we haven't seen before, but it is very solid entertainment.

That's very close to (one of) the Star Trek Into Darkness posters.
And for me, the tag line 'Trust No One' will always be associated with The X-Files.

Someone got paid for this?

Seriously? This has to be one of the laziest jobs I've seen from a major studio. It looks like something you'd find fan-made on the internet when the movie and cast were initially announced - not weeks before release.

This is gonna be hilarious

It's like the slow person's version of Bourne. At least Bourne had AMNESIA. This guy is just a regular dude working as an analyst (like Snowden) and he's suddenly given a pistol as if that makes him Super Agent then they cut to what is clearly a rip off of Casino Royale.

The film shows Jack Ryan serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is recruited to be an analyst after an injury in the field.
