This returning Jurassic Park character is sure to please fans

04.29.2015

I take it that if you're reading this, you WANT to know which character will be making a return trip in JURASSIC WORLD, but suffice it to say that this is a mild spoiler, at best. And no, I'm not talking about Dr. Wu. In the last trailer for JURASSIC WORLD, we caught a mild glimpse of a T-Rex gulping down some food. The Tyrannosaurus has been weirdly absent from the trailers and probably for good reason. It looks as though the same T-Rex who saved the day in the original JURASSIC PARK will also be featured in JURASSIC WORLD!

Writer/director Colin Trevorrow on the returning character:

The T. Rex in this movie is the same T. Rex from JURASSIC PARK. She’s been on the island for 22 years. She’s still alive. She’s a little older, and she’s angry. All of these animals to me are as important in the cast as the humans. It’s been fascinating to find kinds of behavior because they go through such an evolution over the course of the movie. If people see this movie and aren’t as blown away by these images as I am, I’ll be disappointed.

The T-Rex was given a raw deal in JURASSIC PARK III, but I'm hoping Trevorrow will rectify that transgression in WORLD. I know there a lot of folks who were unimpressed with the abundance of CGI in the last trailer, especially compared with the practical effects used in the original JURASSIC PARK. While it's hard to judge the performance of the dinosaurs without seeing the entire film, it may please some of you to know that Phil Tippett, who served as dinosaur supervisor on the original film, returned in that capacity to JURASSIC WORLD utilizing the latest tech. For example, each of Chris Pratt's raptors in the film were actually performance-captured (a la DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) in order to lend them distinct personalities. Now THAT'S a behind-the-scenes featurette I'd like to see!

JURASSIC WORLD hits theaters on June 12, 2015.

I found this out over a month ago, and this is what got me excited for Jurassic World. Why is this just now hitting Joblo?
They better not kill the T-Rex in Jurassic World the way they did in Jurassic Park 3.

Performance capture of what exactly? A dog? A cat? An iguana? Come on guys don't try and fool us with that BS! For performance capture to be relevant you need an actor that looks the part! Apes were close enough to humans for it to work in Planet, so were Gollum and the Na'vi. Remember the only character they didn't motion capture in Tintin was Snowy... You simply can't performance capture an animal, let alone one that got extinct 75 million years ago.

I was hoping that would be Jeff Goldblum playing Dr. Malcolm.

I feel like we already knew this. Didn't someone mention that the TRex in the trailer had the same scars as the TRex from JP1. I guess its nice they confirm that it is the same Dino.

Also, yes, practical effects do tend to be better than CGI. But that doesnt mean cgi is all bad. Lets wait until the movie comes out before we cast judgement on the effects.

Damn, from that screen shot I thought, holy shit they got Dr Grant in there after all. Oh well the T-Rex being older and pissed sounds good.

How?

They bred them lysine deficient so after so long without supplements, they would go in to a coma and die. The point of Lost World was that Site B had lysine heavy plant-life (which kept the Dinosaur ecosystem alive), but Isla Nublar didn't necessarily have those life-savings plants, even Dr. Satler pointed out that along with Dinosaurs, they brought back primitive flora as well - which could grow uncontrollably just as the Dinosaurs did having none of their natural checks & balances and wipe

So it's kinda unlikely they would survive through the same means. Why would they keep those Dinosaurs alive on Isla Nublar? Did Ingen hit up the island when they went and to capture Dinosaurs in Lost World?
Plus how many Dinosaurs were on Isla Nublar? Even with them breeding all willy-nilly, would that small of a population (on a considerably large island - remember how Dr. Grant and the kids went hours between Dinosaur sightings) be able to sustain a Super-Predator like Tyrannosaurus (this is further complicated by more recent evidence saying Tyrannosaurus was a scavenger and opportunist)?
Oh no, I've gone cross-eyed. Please excuse me while I go fuck myself.

They covered it in the novel. Plenty of plants are lysine rich, and the meat eaters are eating the plant-eaters. The lysine would have killed them all off within a week if they hadn't found a way to survive. The genetic trait might not be passed to their wild offspring, so within a generation or two it would be a non-issue.

I feel like she's gonna bite it, but I hope I'm wrong. I also get the feeling Indominus meets its demise with the Mosasaurus in the pool, why else would they always make it a point to show it? I want to get excited for this but I just don't see it working...

I think she's going to be the hero. The trailer has Howard opening a large door, and looking in holding a flare (that's familiar). I think they run out of human options to fight with, hence Pratt using the raptors to track and attack, and the T-Rex proving that mother nature is more of a badass than we could ever hope to be.

Let's hope the final product is as impressive as the original Jurassic Park.

Older, smarter more CGI than you can shake a stick at

Don't tell us it is the same dinosaur. It isn't. If it was, they should have used the same effects from the first movie instead of making everything look like horrible, cheap CGI cartoon characters.

Imagine how awesome Hollywood films would be if they didn't throw out practical effects and instead built upon them.

The first used practical effects because the dinosaur did virtually nothing but stand there menacingly. In a fight with another dinosaur, the ONLY way to pull it off is with CGI.

also they actually brought back Phil Tippet to make animatronic Trexs and do motion capture for the velociraptors. Once again the Masterdebator is hating on absolutely everything for nothing. Does this guy even like movies?

Cool. I wouldn't be surprised if the T-Rex from the original film saves the day again in this new entry.

Exactly! I have a feeling the real heroes of this movie are going to end up being the T-Rex and the Raptors. Mother Nature defeats the man-made menace... kind of.
