This thing is the poster for The Thing, the prequel to The Thing

Jul. 11, 2011by: Dave Davis

The prequel (or "companion piece") to John Carpenter's sci-fi masterpiece THE THING is finally getting thawed for release on October 14, and we've got a first look at the poster... which certainly has the familiar feel of the original (that is, the original remake of the original). Expect a similarly imitative trailer some time this summer.

Synopsis: Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller THE THING, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up.

When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

I love the poster, but still hate the idea of remaking/sequel (whatever) to That Thing.

I'm not giving my money for a shit remake disguised as a prequel. I'll catch this on streaming for free.

Dig it. simple, throwback(-ish), to the point. Hoping the movie does the same. trying to reserve judgement, and im not trying to sound mean, but having some college chick in the flick just dosent feel right to me. hope im wrong...

'From the producers of 'Dawn of the Dead' no, not that one, the Remake...Comes 'The Thing', no not that one, the prequel.

heh

"MacReady, I know Bennings, I've known him for ten years. He's my friend."

That's the only thing that goes through my mind when i look at this poster.

Why don't they just admit this is a straight up remake with a chic added? Oh yeah...because then no one will see it.

I really want to like this movie, since Carpenter's version is a chilling masterpiece. But so far everything looks and sounds too derivative. Take the promo shot of the white dude and black dude side-by-side. They look nearly identical to Kurt Russell and Keith David.

As for the producers not wanting to cheapen the movie? Why do the discoverers of the ship suddenly have to be "international"? Why couldn't they all be Norwegian? I get it, they have to make the film accessible to American

I get it, they have to make the film accessible to American audiences, but we're not fucking morons. LotR was packed with people using english accents, or doing their best impressions. The cast for this remake/prequel could've been Norwegian actors speaking English, but not hiding their Norwegian accents.

Also, in this day of flashcuts and CGI, I have serious doubts the gore will be even half as frightening as Carpenter's movie.

I gotta say, I kinda am looking forward to this one. The Thing is one of the very few horror movies that made a lasting impression on me, and it's a plus that this'll be more of a complimentary piece rather than a "replacement" of the 1982 one. I like the poster, it definitely feels eerie while being simple and elegant.

I know they keep saying this is a prequel, but this is seeming more and more like a remake each day. Why not change the title? I know they said they couldn't find a good "prequel title" but I really doubt that "The Thing" is the ONLY good title they could use.

According to the producers, they tried "The Thing: Origin", "The Thing: Alpha" and didn't like the way they fit and cheapened the title of the original. By calling it "The Thing" they're simply bumping it up against the original so they can be viewed as one film. I, for one, can't wait for it and I'm just thankful it's not a remake. Maybe call it "The Thing Before"?

Cool teaser poster, I love the alien hand. This has a lot of potential, so hopefully it doesn't disappoint!

Saw parts of this last year

The short amount of finished footage I saw last year was superb. Great visuals and great suspense. Can't wait to see the full movie.

This poster shows how LAZY producers are. Leeching off the classic to gain a buck.

Works for me

I'm trying to stay somewhat optimistic about this movie. I like Edgerton and Winstead.

That extra tidbit...

...just blew my mind right now. Green color of approval if only for the look of the poster. Hard to imagine this will ever resonate same as the original though.

Cool poster. Movie sounds unnecessary, but even so, cool poster.
