This track from Hans Zimmer's score for Man of Steel might be the best 3 minutes of your day

2 years agoby:

If you're a movie score junkie this one's for you. Water Tower Music has released the first track from the MAN OF STEEL soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, which is the same one used in the most recent trailer. Following on the heels of John Williams, Zimmer has created a new, exciting theme that is boiling with thematic motifs and pulse pounding flair that fits the red-and-blue superhero to a tee. Some have lamented the loss of Williams iconic theme, but after more than 30 years I think it's just fine to move on to the next thing. Nothing will ever take away the brilliance that is Williams' score, so letting a master like Zimmer take on a theme for Superman's next evolution onscreen is a damn fine choice.

Have a listen:

The soundtrack, set for release on June 11th, will be available in regular and deluxe versions, which you can preorder here.

MAN OF STEEL, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Any Adams, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, and Laurence Fishburne is set to storm the box office on June 14, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: I've been soaking in Brian Tyler's score for Iron Man 3 the past few days and give it my seal of approval. It's the best score for any of the Iron Man films, in my opinion.

I honestly don't rate it and I loved the Batman music he and Newton Howard did. They should have went with someone like Thomas Newman, a more American classic approach, not sleepy rubbish and then wake everyone up.
It's just team Batman to me (the whole film) which is what the original Superman tried to with "team Godfather" with Puzzo and Brando as they were "hot" at the time but luckily that turned out alright and hopefully this will be watchable.

Still a DVD film for me and out of the

Seriously guys its 2013, not 1978. We all love the score from Williams, but let's move on with a fresh Superman for the next generation. This is a damn good piece of music. Let's move on together.

Nope

If you're going to replace the original theme, it better be something I want to hum when I leave the theatre, this does not do it. I do not expect it to be as good as what John Williams created but at least let it have the grandiose feel. I hope these reviews get back to Han and he decides to make some changes. Besides he was never a good theme composer.

I hope this isn't the best piece of the score cause it's not that good. Especially when compared to Williams. But I have faith in Zimmer. As for the Iron Man 3 score, I can't remember any of it but then, I was disappointed with the movie too.

I was the biggest Superman fan as a kid. I used to run around the house in my Superman pajamas humming the John Williams score. That theme has been the only Superman theme for the past 30+ years, so understandably people (myself included) are going to be leery of a new theme, especially by someone as bombastic as Hans Zimmer. I was so married to Danny Elfman's Batman theme that I hated Zimmer's Batman Begins score. I said there was no theme (there is; it's Molossus on the soundtrack), but I

I was so married to Danny Elfman's Batman theme that I hated Zimmer's Batman Begins score. I said there was no theme (there is; it's Molossus on the soundtrack), but I grew to love it. So now I'm really happy how this turned out. It's truly different from the Williams score in a great way. I got goosebumps when those strings came in at 1:20 playing C-B-C, and when it kicks in to full gear at 2:04, how can you not imagine Superman doing something incredibly heroic to that? Will it be as iconic as the Williams score? I highly doubt it. But based on te last trailer it matches the imagery of he film. And for those of you saying there's no theme, it's G-A♭-A-G-F-E♭. I heard it. And one last note, can we as a collective Internet stop using the word "meh"? It's incredibly douchey and implies that you can do better, which in most situations is doubtful. If you wrote a better score to Superman, by all means post in on Soundcloud and well let you know what we think.

I actually think the theme song posted here is a good companion piece to John WIlliams' Superman theme which is Classic and Timeless.

I wouldn't even put this on Zimmer's "best of" list. I guess I was expecting more. I love his Batman & Inception scores, but this seems more in line with his generic action movie scores that he sometimes does.

This one feels like a "for the paycheck only" kind of score.

Meh. Certainly wont be walking out of the theater humming this in my head.

Seriously, what happened to hero music being thematic, representative, and meaningful? This music could be in any superhero movie and I wouldn't notice. Zimmer took the safest route & the most boring route possible with this.

Yea I like it. I like the build up to the oomph. On the other hand, unlike the Williams score, it won't work as a ringtone.

The softer more dramatic parts sound good, but as soon as it tries to become a triumphant Superman score it just turns into noise. Seriously sounds like every instrument is playing at once, as loud as they can, with no real theme even there.

Typical Zimmer... MEH!

Zimmer has never been good at action scores. Let alone Superhero score and this is no exception. It's typical generic RCP music. Film scoring has become more homogenous for that reason.

Not bad, but not much of a theme.

I like it, but I can't help but think it's better suited for the ending scene of a baseball movie, where it's all down to that final pitch and they need a home run to win the game.

You know what? I can't help but think Zimmer was going for *exactly* that. Baseball and Superman do kind of go together in a sort of lateral way.

Picture it in your head. The slow build up as the underdog of a batter knows it's all on him, and steps up to the plate. The panning shots of the rest of the team, and the fans, watching in anticipation. The music builds. The pitcher eyes the catcher, and knuckles up the ball. There's an eerie stillness. He throws, and in dramatic slow motion the batter swings, and makes contact. The music bursts forth with horns and drum beats as he runs, not knowing if it'll clear the fence. The crowd stands

The crowd stands up, their heads following the ball as it soars, and the batter turning first base. The pitcher turns his headback hoping it's not going over. The batter is rounds second. The music reaches it's peak as the ball clears the stadium. The team runs out of the dugout, cheering, and crying tears of joy, as the once-a-nobody batter has become a hero, and runs down to home plate. Music fades along with the screen that turns to black. Drum beats continue into the darkness as we fade into a still frame 1930's front page news paper.

I'm sorry, but this is just yet another themeless Superhero score, like most superhero movies today. Doesn't hold a candle to Williams original Superman score.

Not that it is bad, but it is just typical Zimmer. Seems like he is stretched pretty thin these days,

I always thought...

That the original theme was Super cheesy - BUT it was exciting and fit the story perfectly.

This one I think fits (from what footage has been released) fits THIS story perfectly. PUMPED

I'll admit I'm not the biggest Hans Zimmer fan out there, what with his rampant reuse of motifs from his previous work, but this - this really, really works.

It may take time with the lose of Williams' theme, but it's Zimmer.

I will admit I didn't lose myself over the new Superman theme like some have. It sounds good, but just like when Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard did a whole new score for Batman with Batman Begins, it will take a showing or two of the film before I adapt to this new theme. However, the idea of replacing a classic John WIlliams theme is difficult, it's like going to see Episode VII with a new composer and with a new Star Wars main theme. The music of John Williams cannot be replaced, but I

Always have, always will. I agree with Paul Shirey, Iron Man 3 has the best score out of the Iron Man trilogy.
