This trailer for Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea will have you on edge

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by a whale of mammoth size and and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. Ron Howard's IN THE HEART OF THE SEA reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. While we had originally expected this film in the beginning of the year, it's almost time to take the action to the sea with this brand new trailer that is easily one of the most tense I've seen this year!

It's possible that this movie was pushed back to garner some more buzz around awards season, and it'll need it if it's going to compete with a whale of a movie opening one week later, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. Still, this looks to be a welcome maritime adventure of which I'd say we don't have enough of these days!

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA will open in theaters on December 11, 2015.

I loved the Nathaniel Philbrick book. Ron Howard does a good job adapting a book to film, historical (Apollo 13) or not (DaVinci Code). Looks like a solid cast and I know the story is moving.

Umm, if the movie was pushed to December for more buzz for the awards season, and presumably an Oscar push. I don't think Star Wars: The Force Awakens is it's competitor. No offense to Star Wars, but kind of a pointless comment in this article.

I am so there. Ron Howard is really one of the best directors working in Hollywood. "Rush" was incredible and I hope he, and Hemsworth, can create that sort of magic once again.

Definitely looks worth the extra wait. Looks like Howard has another upcoming hit on his hands.

Well at least the whale is not as big as in the poster and the ship is small. If it was a 1000 foot whale it would be stupid, just stupid.
And who knows maybe the ship sunk during a whaling expedition and they blamed it on a whale, its not like they could fact check that shit back then.

maybe it was all a lie, but they got a hell of a good story out of it. the movie isn't claiming that this is the truth (like a documentary). it's based on a true story. like how the Conjuring was based on a true story.

CG, CG and more CG... Jurassic World all over again, except this is supposed to be a true story... Too bad, this could have been great.

I'm not a huge fan of CG either, but how exactly do you make a film about a giant whale in the sea without a lot of CG? In this circumstance I'm ok with it if it feels and looks real.

hating on good CG is like hating on a practical effect because somewhere in the model...papier mache was used.

Well what about Jaws my friends? Or Waterworld, practically every shot in this movie was real and it still looks great 20 years later.

I'm not against some form of CG to enhance the whale (like the T-Rex in Jurassic Park), but having the boat, the sky and the sea in CG is just too much... Well like Life Of Pi actually. I'm not saying it's bad CG here, but why go that route when practical effects could do the trick in most cases (and no, CG isn't less expensive).

@Winddragon: I know 3

@Winddragon: I know 3 little movies set in space in which a knight has laser sword, some dude flies at the speed of light across the galaxy, entire planets blow up, a giant slug eats frogs and smokes a pipe, a little green critter makes a spaceship fly and guess what... not a single CG shot.

Unlike "Jurassic World" this will have depth and won't pander to the audience.
