Thomas Jane & John Cusack bring the action cheese in trailer for Drive Hard

02.13.2014

Now, before we start tearing this a new one, let's look at what we're dealing with here; John Cusack, who has had a mostly respectable career, until going the Steven Seagal route, and Thomas Jane, an actor we all dig as the kind of rough-around-the edges guy who should be in better movies, have teamed up to make a cheesy action comedy called DRIVE HARD. With all that laid out, you can't have high expectations and, fortunately (or unfortunately), the trailer for the film doesn't look like it wants to be anything more than what you expect; straight cheesy B-grade schlock. Is that a bad thing? Shiiiiit, you take a look and decide for yourself.

"What kind of stupid do you think I am?":

Here's the synposis:

American thief, Simon Keller (Cusack), arrives in a foreign country in need of a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the underworld, he takes a driving lesson from ex F-1 champion, Peter Roberts (Jane), now working as a driving instructor. After Keller robs a bank during the lesson, Roberts has no choice, but to use his driving talent to get away from pursuing police and mobsters.

If it were any other actors in this film, I wouldn't give it a second thought, but despite their lack of success of late, I still love Cusack and Jane. I have no reason to believe that DRIVE HARD will be anything more than a hot mess, but I do have reason to believe that it could be a FUN hot mess. Or, it could be a complete embarrassment. I don't know. It does serve as a reminder, more than anything, that I want to see both of these guys doing better work, but I can't begrudge someone trying to pay the bills.

DRIVE HARD races into theaters (okay, probably VOD) sometime in 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Let's get these guys back on track: What can we cast Thomas Jane and John Cusack in that would put them back in the game? I'd love to see Jane back as The Punisher (hello? Netflix?) and Cusack needs to put down the gun and lighten up a bit. Let's hear what you got...

To be honest....this looks like it could be dumb B-movie fun. Not a well put together trailer but I love both of the actors.

It seems like from what I've been seeing and hearing from them is that they're the type of actors who are kinda sick of the mainstream Hollywood bullshit. Which is why we keep seeing Cusack in cheap shit and not much of Jane (and if we do, it's smaller movies). I listened to Jane on a podcast a while ago and I feel like the whole shit with getting dicked around by the

Thomas Jane was my third favorite Punisher.

Drive hard. Hard.
Down life's rocky road.
Drive bold. Hard.
That's my creed, my code

Reminds me a good deal of that Jean-Claude Van Damme comedy "Welcome to the Jungle", for some reason.

Thomas Jane was actually a good Punisher. Love to see him as The Punisher again or his action noir in "Give Em Hell, Malone". John Cusack needs something like this movie or Grosse Point Blank.

Jane was phenomenal in Boogie Nights-- he plays a great unhinged wild card, just needs to be in the right hands.

Terribly cut trailer, but the movie looks like it'll be fun enough. I'm in.

Anything with Jane is worth a look

he's an underrated leading man although happy to see all us schmoes have much love for him. Tidbit: I think these two guys should be headling their own TV shows (although in all fairness Jane did 'Hung but it was short lived'), imagine Cusack in a similarly juicy role like Spacey in 'House of Cards' and Jane being one of the leads in "Sons of Anarchy",fingers crossed this is the wasy the go sooner than later.

Cusack needs to make another Gross Pont Blank

GPB and War Inc. are two of my favorite Cusack movies. They are so awesome and JC is just the best in them. Perfect mix of action/comedy and JC looks like he is having a blast.

Punisher: War Zone was so cheesy. At least Jane's film felt more realistic and gritty. The way the character should be.

Agreed. Ray Stevenston was much better in the role. Both the films had horrible villains.

Eh, now I love me some Ray but they had him weeping like a little bitch in that one. As a big fan of the Punisher from the comics they need to showcase him with less range. Make him the efficient killing machine that he is and showcase his cleverness...

I liked Dolph Lungren's "The Punisher". The Uncut version.

Punisher War zone, what a waste of time that was. Still think Lundgrens was the best. Although Thomas Jane could have been the best. Ray Stevenston is not a leading man, and never will be.

I agree that Stevenson fit Frank Castle the best, and he played the part great, but that script was simply awful (and cheesy), and the scenery chewing villians sucked ass. That said, the sequence of Frank clearing that apartment building was the closest we've seen so far of how the Punisher should be on film. And for those bitching about Frank crying at the grave of his family, you obviously know nothing about loss. It doesn't matter how tough someone is where pain like that is concerned.

Jane's Punisher was in no way "the way the character should be". He was an FBI agent. He used a fake fire hydrant. He snuck around and pitted people against one another. He was a big pussy compared to how the comics portray Castle. Read Punisher: The Cell for a bad ass Punisher story that should be put to film. Besides, Jane is just way too small and wussy looking.

This may not look like the greatest film in the world, but I'm a HUGE fan of Cusack and Jane and think they're both great actors to make this at least a fun little film.

And what Thunderdome said below, I'm still disappointed we didn't get another Punisher film with Jane (Dirty Laundry was great) and that his show Hung got canceled. If he were to play another comic book character I would love to see him do a Jonah Hex film.

Yes, it looks cheap, it IS cheesy, but they both look like they're having fun. Thomas Jane pops in this role. It's the least stoic he's been…ever? I love it. Bring it on!

Maybe Hot tub 2 is not bad enough from Cusack to return lol considering his latest movies, thatīs a possibility! I canīt believe him working in this movies. Collin Farrell stars in a lot of big studios movies, and mostly are flops. But he is still out there in Hollywood. Cusack never was the leading man in a big Hollywood flop, so I donīt get why is he fallin so low doing this kind of movies. Heīs a solid actor, and he worked with great directors. Wow...

...I really want to know why Cusack didn't return for Hot Tub Time Machine 2. It won't feel the same without him. And I'd love another Punisher with Jane, still disappointed HBO cancelled Hung.
