Thomas Jane talks about The Lycan, getting fired from Headshot, and his western

Jun. 28, 2011by:

What I love about Tom Jane is how utterly f*cking random he is. During Comic-Con panels he sits barefooted, indian style on the table, loves comics, and dressed up as The Rocketeer to a 20th anniversary event. He never apologizes for his behavior and is rather blunt when speaking candidly. He's fun.

Collider got the lowdown on a few subjects including THE LYCAN, why he was fired from HEADSHOT, and gives details on a western he's written.

Let's begin with his newest project, THE LYCAN. Obviously it's a werewolf movie and Jane really digs it, "Im doing a werewolf movie called, The Lycan, which is a gothic werewolf romance set in the late 1700s. its f*ckin cool. Its basically Alien, set in a castle, with werewolves."

The deets on the HEADSHOT situation:

JANE: Well, Wayne Kramer brought me into the project and when Wayne left the project I suggested Walter Hill to Stallone and the next week they hired Walter Hill and I was very happy about that because Ive always wanted to work with him.

Collider: But then did the studio sort of

JANE: Well, Joel Silver came onboard the project and said that he has a quote-unquote formula for these quote-unquote buddy movies and it has to be a white guy and a quote-unquote ethnic guy. And they relieved me of duty and basically paid me off, which I was really upset about, you know? I didnt get a call from Stallone. I was a little upset about that. Maybe they didnt want anybody on the movie with a bigger dick than him.

Collider: Wayne Kramer was sort of abruptly fired from that film too. Was it over him being too violent? Because Ive been told that its still an R-rated movie and Stallones comment was that [Kramer had] made a [script] that was too violent and that they were doing something that was a little less extreme.

JANE: Well, Wayne Kramer is very dark, very extreme, which I personally like. But I know that Stallone is a bit more of a traditionalist. That doesnt make it worse it just makes it different. Walter Hill for my money was the man to fulfill both. He can do great with character and hes great with action. So he is the manI hope they can still make a great film without me.

Collider: Is there any chance they could find another role in the film for you?

JANE: I doubt it. Im kinda like the spurned loverlet em go shoot themselves.

Collider: In the head?

JANE: No, I meanshoot the film themselves. (laughter).

Jane's Western:

"Ive got a dream to do a big anamorphic, old John Ford style western. Everybody wants to do a deconstruction of a western. After Sergio Leone broke open the mold, that kind of became the mold, you know? So now the spaghetti western became the mold of the western. So, the question is, where do you go from there? I want to go back to the roots of the western and try to reconstruct a traditional western in a modern context, in a modern way. To bring all the values of what makes a western great into the modern world, which I havent seen yet. True Grit is a modern movie, but its not a new kind of western. This movie called Blueberry with Vincent Cassel, they tried to do a kind of surreal western which I thought was a really strong attempt at breakingbreak open the western genre. I want to do something different. I want to go back to John Ford, back to anamorphic widescreen, monument valley, that western."

Would have loved to see the Wayne Kramer version of this film. Don't know what I will do now, I want to boycot Headshot because they fired Jane, but this is still going to be an R-rated Stallone action flick so it's going to be hard...

Jane is awesome. HA Joel Silver what a joke. Ok in the 80s the man had his hot streak of epic action movies but after that not so much. How quickly we forget Mr. Silver that you produced Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds and Cradle 2 The Grave. 3 complete stinkers 2 of which were a complete waste and utter embarassment of Jet Li. The other had Steven Seagal...yeah...oh and all 3 had DMX yeah you're a genius Silver. And Mr. Silver, buddy movies have to be that white guy and an ethnic guy to

What about Bad Boys 2? 2 awesome brothers, no white guy. How about one of the best cop movies of all time that also has one of the greatest car chases ever filmed called The French Connection. 2 white cops Joel. The race does not matter it's the movie and the chemistry that make a buddy movie work period. Also cannot lie lost a bit of respect for a guy I love who is Sylvester Stallone. He should have fought to keep Jane because that partnership is action gold. Not even a fucking phone call?! Shame on you Sly. Good for you T-Jane, fuck em.

I love Thomas Jane. Like most others, I find it so incredibly depressing and infuriating that he was fired and for such a moronic reason. The movie may very well be D.O.A. unless they find someone who can bring the right elements. In my mind, since they want someone "ethnic" it will only work if they bring in someone older and more seasoned, but even then it depends on a lot.

I think Thomas Jane has been great in every thing he's been in. Especially the Punisher! And the Mist!

My Thomas Jane story...

I had the opportunity to meet Jane at a convention some years back while he was shooting The Mist and has just gotten done shooting The Tripper...

and lemme tell you...this guy is top-notch...he answered all of our questions...AND THEN SOME...and even hung out with us afterward just bullshitting with us and smoking cigarettes, and drinking a beer...real "guy's" stuff: just talkin' and bullshittin'...not like closed off super celeb bullshit attitude towards common folk...he was joking around

BUT THE BEST PART was during the Q/A which also featured David Arquette (Arquette did not stay after)there's Jane, sitting, answering all the questions while doodling on the desk with a sharpie marker- not on a piece of paper- but on the table itself...

low-and- behold after the Q/A he stands up and the desk doodles he drew were of this giant hippie dude smoking all surreal and trippy looking...the table was covered with one singular, almost a mural, of this scene he drew of the hippie guy smoking...it was hilarious, bc there he is answering all the questions and he's drawing this really ornate, really big mural of some character on the table at the same time...like he split his brain in 2...one half doing the Q/A the other half drawing this portrait of some guy...

so someone asks him what the doodle was, the guy working the event tilts the table so the audience can see it and Jane says: "It's of that guy there, sitting in the front row" as he points to some random dude and proceeds to walk out...

and yeah, once we saw the whole drawing, and saw the guy, it was like a surreal version of what the guy in the front row looked like...but all fucked up and weird looking...like borderline Dale Keown art style, but a bit messier.

That dick quote is hilarious, I am a fan of this guy, but I really hate his show Hung. "I Melt with You" looks interesting, and I have no idea why this guys next film is with Miley Cyrus. His IMDB page is full of movies I had no idea he was in (Scott Pilgrim WTF!!!!). But who could forget Deep Blue Sea, and The Mist so it's all forgiven.

Think the guy needed that, as a little wake up call. The guys always turning down movies. I was really pissed when I found out he didnt want to do Punisher 2. Something about him not believing in the flick. He had no problem doing the first one and that movie wasnt exactly the greatest. I think he also turned down Watchmen, (not totally sure though), but then he turns around and does shit like Mutant Chronicles. And now hes going to do a gothic werewolf romance flick???

But I dont

Actually JANE stayed in shape to do a second Punisher for a whole year if I remember correctly, while the studio did nothing. LAWYERED!

Tom Jane is the man, period. If the western falls through, he could always do Homeless Dad. "I just want my kids back!"
