Thor 2 will go on without Kenneth Branagh

Jun. 30, 2011by:

I really thought that if THOR 2 came around that Kenneth Branagh would be back to direct. Guess that isn't the case.

Marvel and Disney are going forward with THOR 2 and Chris Hemsworth will still be our titular hero. But why did Branagh decide to abandon the second installment?

The only information offered by Deadline is that the split was "mutual and amicable". Okay... Branagh will be involved in some sort of capacity but they've got to find someone else to helm.

THOR 2 will be released the summer of 2013. So right now they are quickly trying to find someone to replace Branagh.

I really hope that he comes out and says why he decided not to do this. I guess he just isn't a sequel directing kind of guy.

If they could get Gore Verbenski and Jerry Bruckhiemer on it, that could be epic.

Saw it coming...

Branagh is not really the type to get contracted down to sequels, he likes to do his own thing and move on. So not a surprise, to the same sense where Favs left.

The only thing they gotta do is be smart and hire someone with a theatrical background like they did wtih Branagh, i think that plays a bit importance when it comes to bringing Thor to the big screen.

Oh and DarkElfa is crazy.

It seems like everyone that works with Marvel has a problem with them. I'm starting to think that perhaps Marvel is the problem. They might be trying to get talent for free.

Agreed, seems like they think these movies are successful because of the characters, not because it's a well made movie.

OR the talent might be trying to get paid way more than a reasonable amount. That's probably the truth, not the other way around.

Darren Aronofsky. You can take this one since we no longer get Origins 2 from you. And screw Noah's Ark, everyone in the world knows that story.

I'm okay with this. His crooked establishing shots kind of made me crazy. And with those actors, I don't think he had much to do.

This news is that troubling to me because Thor was good, but of course could have been better. I think Marvel will pick a suitable replacement.

Doubt Natalie Portman will return too although you'd think she would be in avengers first.

He drank, he fought, did his ancestors proud. Brannagh delivered a fine superhero movie, directed a perfect performance from Hemsworth, and successfully connected the trickiest of Marvel heroes with mainstream audiences. He can sleep soundly with passing off the reins.

unfortunate, but it's alright

I'm sure he'll be a producer on it or something and still have some influence on it, which will be cool. Lookin forward to it!

@ttop33, you say: Seems like everyone that works with Marvel has a problem with them. I'm starting to think that perhaps Marvel is the problem.
By "everyone" I'm sure you mean Jon Favreau, Terrence Howard and Edward Norton...yeah, that's about everyone alright. Not!
What about all the ones who keep coming back like RDJ, Sam Jackon, Paltrow, Clark Gregg and all the others coming back for the Avengers? Doesn't it make MORE people who actually seem to stick around?
That said, I think it's easy

That said, I think it's easy for everyone to make assumptions as to why certain people don't come back when we really don't have a clue as to what really goes on.

On the news: Meh, I don't really care as long as the next guy is as good if not better. But Marvel seem to be picking all the right people for their movies. So far anyway.

Aren't most of these people contractually obligated to come back?

No big deal...

even though I loved Thor, I really don't mind Branagh not returning to direct the sequel, justhope they get a good director.

I'll just say it: Kenneth Branagh did a GREAT job with Thor. I mean, as far as heroes go, Thor is kinda lame, but Branagh made bold choices and really told a good story and did a fantastic job with Thor. Without him at the helm, my expectations are lowered.

So... no more random dutch angles?

But really, Branagh did fine work on "Thor"... it was in the editing room that it all got chopped up so much that each scene's oomph was castrated.

Branagh made one of the best films of the summer with the first. I hope he does come back!

However, if he doesn't, do hope it's because HE did not want to, and not some crazy shit like what was pulled with Faverau and "Iron Man 2".

I'm really worried that after the Norton fiasco, that Marvel Studios is a bit too cocky for their own good. This is just another thing that adds to that belief.
