Thor star Chris Hemsworth is bummed that Kenneth Branagh won't direct the sequel

Jul. 30, 2011by:

Kenneth Branagh certainly gave a touch of class to Marvel's grandiose mythology when delivering THOR to the big screen, a specific touch that will be absent when the sequel rolls without the stage and screen veteran directing the Thunder God's bombastic activities.

The hammer-swinger himself Chris Hemsworth is particularly dismayed by Branagh's decision to leave the franchise behind. "I’m really disappointed," Hemsworth told Hero Complex. "Ken built that character, and everything I know about the Thor world I learned while shoulder-to-shoulder with Ken. I learned so much from him."

"As long as he’s happy, that’s the thing," he continued. (Branagh reportedly decided the time and energy required for another big-budget epic was more than he wanted to deal with so soon after finishing the first movie.) "I learned so much from Ken while we built [the first film], so at least I had that time with someone like that. The start of anything creative is the most important period in a way. That’s when the most can go wrong, and Ken made sure we got it right."

Marvel is currently seeking a suitable replacement to direct THOR 2, which they want in theaters July 2013, two months after IRON MAN 3.

Thoughts on who could be a good choice to direct? And, more importantly, what kind of post-AVENGERS adventure the Thunder God might have in the sequel?

Kenneth Branagh is a class act. He knows his limitations and taking the family Shakespeare element out of play in the sequel makes it out of his comfort zone. I read he'll still be a producer. So, good move by a classy guy.

Nicolas Winding Refn

"Drive" is gonna be a hit with critics and audiences.
It's known he wants to do a Wonder Woman movie but that will never happen.

Alfonso Cuaron. Its been 5 years since this guy last directed a movie and his new ones sounds boring as fuck. Would much rather seem him do something like Thor.

As cool as Thor was, I kinda got sick of all the tilted camera angles for EVERY damn shot! Not sure if that was Branagh's doing, but it bothered me from the moment I saw the trailer.

Mel Gibson

I agree. It strangely makes a ton of sense.

One word:

HELA. Make Thor come back to find Jane has died, and he has to go to the Underworld and face Hela to get her back- the only catch- she can't go back to earth, she has to stay in Asgard. It'd be wicked- Asgard's version of Hell- Make it happen Marvel!

You know, Mel Gibson wouldn't be bad choice at all! Man sure know's how to direct an epic. And least give a guy a chance to redeem some of himself. And Joss Whedon is also a good choice.

But hey, as long as it is not Justin Lin, Jon Chu or someone like that!

Anyone think Portman won't be back?

Portman made Thor before winning her Oscar, and she recently had a kid and isn't attached to any future movies yet, as far as I know. I liked her as Jane, but I can see her not signing up for the sequel. I wonder if they'll recast or just introduce a new love interest (sorry, don't know much about Thor other than the movie).

Sam Jackson signed a contract with Marvel Studios to portray Nick Fury in 9 films. I'm fairly sure there was something similar in Portman's contract when she signed on for Thor.

Here's a suggestion that no producer would even consider, but how about Mel Gibson? I mean there aren't any Jews in Norse mythology, are there? Think about it, it could work.

I'd say if the Avengers does well, Joss Whedon. Or, if he's will Jon Favs. I also think David Yates might work.
