UPDATED: Thor arrives on set! Thor: The Dark World set pics reveal Sif on horseback, explosions, monsters and armor

Sep. 11, 2012by: Paul Shirey

UPDATED: Thor has joined the fight!  Chris Hemsworth has arrived on set to join Lady Sif in the village beatdown, showing off some modified armor and much longer hair, which again likens the film to it's more Conan-esque look.  Scroll down to get in on the battle!

Filming is currently underway in the Bourne Woods of Surrey, England, where a veritable force of extras, props, and live-action set pieces are abound for the Marvel Phase Two sequel, THOR: THE DARK WORLD.  And through the smoke emerged none other than Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, the female warrior and often lover of the God of Thunder, riding on horseback, sword in hand, bloodied and ready for battle.

The set has been under construction for some time now and it appears to be in full use.  No sightings of Chris Hemsworth as Thor just yet, but you can expect plenty of sneak peeks as this film gets deep into production.  Although there's no explanation as to what scene is being shot, the appearance of a monster-like creature and the horned-armor of the Asgardian warriors is enough to denote a battle (unless the explosion didn't give it away) in the village-like setting.

Take a visit:

Directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), the pic stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Ray Stevenson, Jaimie Alexander, Zachary Levi, Natalie Portman, Christopher Eccleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD opens on November 8, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: I'm digging the fact that Taylor is directing and the emphasis on having a grittier, more "Earthy" tone to the sets this time out. Feels more Conan than Sci-Fi, which I prefer. What do you think?

Not that i was checking him out...

Looks awesome. his hair/wig/extensions?? look different, and his hair is parted the opposite direction as the previous movies. I'm excited to see more of the other realms in this movie. Is Natalie Portman back for this one??

Okay, you've had your fun...

...now stop changing Thor's costume. This one's fine, let's just leave it where it is. And leave the hair alone too. Any longer and he's going to need a pointy 80s guitar instead of a hammer.

However, very much looking forward to this. Diggin' the grit.

Thor's hair is getting longer & longer in each movie. By the time they get to Avengers 2 he's going to be not only throwing down with Mjölnir, but he'll be whipping baddies with his hair back and fourth Rapunzel style! Just jokes, looks awesome though!

I like how it looks like this movie is taking place only in Asgard and the other realms and not Earth. The first movie was good, but the Earth scenes were slow, although I know they were necessary for the story. I really like the idea of making a Thor movie more like a fantasy story and comic book hero, and I think that is what they're going for here.

But where's the helmet!!?? Just kiddin'!
I'm digging the "new" look for Thor. I'm loving everything I'm seeing in those pics!
I hope we get a little tease of Surtur though, as he seems like a no brainer for a 3rd Thor movie!

Now, seriously, where's the helmet?? The one that had a partial visor when Thor used to rock a beard in the comics would be bad ass for at least one fight scene!

So far, so good. Great choice of director. Marvel seems to be doing everything right these days.

Keep in mind- only one set

This does look awesome, but keep in mind that this might be a pre-credits sequence, or a flash-sideways- it could be any number of things in relation to the whole story.

Totally agree about the Earthly feel.

That was my only real issue about the first movie. I always pictured Asgard looking more "Conan than sci-fi" as you stated. And it wasn't even really that much of an issue. Glad they're moving towards that though I hope it's not so different as to be distracting.

You can definitely tell that one of the directors behind "Game Of Thrones" is involved in this film based on those pics lol.

Really digging the use of practical effects/sets vs all the green screen of the original
