Updated: Great Odin's raven! Thor: The Dark World to get early IMAX 3D release

Aug. 15, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Correction: Apparently this is for international release only. Strange choice, but there it is. So, those of you outside the states that have an IMAX may be in luck.

Well, it looks like those who are seriously jonesin' for their next Marvel fix will get to have it a week earlier, as long as they're down for the IMAX 3D treatment. The sequel to 2011's THOR is now getting the full-scale conversion treatment into the IMAX 3D format and will bow one week earlier than it's standard release. Just in time for Halloween, you can catch THOR: THE DARK WORLD on October 30, 2013 in IMAX 3D.

Here's the press release:

“Like all the dynamic Marvel characters, Thor has developed a massive global following, and we look forward to moviegoers experiencing this highly anticipated next chapter in IMAX 3D,” said Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment and Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. “We’re excited to continue to build on our flourishing partnership with Marvel and Disney with this iconic property.”

“All the nine realms will be stunningly displayed when 'Thor: The Dark World' arrives in IMAX 3D,” said Dave Hollis, Executive Vice President, Theatrical Exhibition Sales and Distribution, The Walt Disney Studios. “We continue to have great success with IMAX and are thrilled to once again work with them to bring the Marvel Universe to life in this premium format.”

The IMAX release of Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX 3D Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

I certainly don't need to see THOR: THE DARK WORLD in 3D, but I've come to appreciate the IMAX format more so than I have in the past. It really is superior in terms of picture and sound, so for the bigger releases that can really capitalize on the format, you can count me in. Perhaps the biggest drawback is the upcharge, but thankfully there is almost always an option to not see it in IMAX if it doesn't fit your budget.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD hits IMAX 3D on October 30, 2013 and opens on standard screens starting November 8, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Will you catch Thor: The Dark World earlier now or are you sticking it out for the standard release?

great post scene

I saw this on Tuesday night in London, coincidentally in Greenwich where a good chunk of the film is based. IT's not about the mid-credits scene, it's about the POST-credits scene, which is split into two sections, and the second bit is brilliant. Also an epic cameo in the film..

Attention Marvel Studios, some good advice.

If Marvel was so smart and really cared about there films they'd stop with this post 3D conversion crap by now and film the damn films in 3D or with IMAX cameras.

It would be great if every 3D IMAX release had at least one 2D IMAX showing a day, like Man of Steel did.

"on October 30, 2013 in IMAX 3D."

Should have been October 31. That is a THORsday.

I'm not a fan of post-conversion 3D, but perhaps the IMAX DMR is cut above the usual stuff? Anyone know first-hand?

IMAX is fantastic.. especially films that utilize it's larger format with taller aspect ratios (The Dark Knight, TDK Rises Skyfall). I find these much more enjoyable than IMAX 3D.

Marvel tends to be really poor with their 3D releases. The 3D usually has maybe 1 or 2 moments that make you go "wow, what cool 3D" but I learned to stopped paying extra for non-existent 3D.

At this point, They certainly can afford to actually shoot in 3D, that's for sure, instead of the usual post conversion

Not sure how they got their release date for this movie, but I don't think it's going to help it at the Box Office. I know everyone on this site is looking forward to this movie, but I don't think it will turn out as good as everyone hopes for. Thor is a cool character, but I have a bad feeling about this one.

That's cool. It will probably look great on IMAX 3D and I'm sure some of the 3D will be when Thor throws the hammer.

Seeing Iron Man 3 in IMAX 3D was an experience all by itself and I'm expecting no different from this film.
