Thor: The Dark World's Alan Taylor set to direct The Terminator reboot

Sep. 5, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Looks like director Alan Taylor is going from Westeros to Asgard to the future as the director is now being set to direct THE TERMINATOR reboot for Paramount, Anna Purna, and Skydance. Taylor has mostly worked in television, but is making his feature film debut with THOR: THE DARK WORLD this November.

From Variety:

The studio had targeted Ang Lee early on, but a deal could never be reached. Other early targets included Rian Johnson and Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve. In the end, Taylor won the job in helping reboot the iconic sci-fi franchise.

Story details are still under wraps, but it has been confirmed that it will be a reboot of the series and the first of a new trilogy. The original "Terminator" Arnold Schwarzenegger has been linked to the new trilogy as well, but to what capacity has yet to be disclosed. Either way, it appears that the wheels are definitely turning for the franchise and we'll be neck deep in silver exoskeletons, laser rifles, and time travelling soldiers come 2015.

THE TERMINATOR reboot is expected to arrive on June 26, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: I'd still like to see a Neill Blomkamp version of The Terminator, but since he's against franchises, I guess we never will...

I wait 20 flipping years for the movies to take place during the war, we get one and now its lets reboot this bitch. At this point, Id rather they end the franchise.

I agree. As much as people complained about Salvation I actually enjoyed that movie and I liked where they could take it from that point. I was really hoping to see another movie set during the war that would maybe introduce Arnie as a human that was used as the model for the T-800. But instead we get a reboot with Arnie attached. Not what I was hoping for at all.

So we finally get to the war aspect of the story and now we're going all the way back to page one?

What a waste of storyline and future potential.

Terminator Salvation already tried this.

I'd love to see Bale come back, I actually liked him in the role. It just needed a better script and director, frankly. It's sad to see they won't be following through with that. Soon there will be a John Connor Curse since all the actors attached to the role seemingly end up never playing him beyond a single film.

Say What........

In my opinion why would you reboot the franchise. Granted the 3rd installment needs to be forgotten about, the fourth installment was ok. But Terminator and Terminator 2 where brilliant in every aspect. So why not continue the franchise..set in the future let the fans see the great way lets start seeing stories that invovle Kyle Reece being sent back and how the resistance capture a Terminator and send that back. Why can't we have that maybe that can lead to a film set in the past (in the franchise timeline)) as surely skynet would have attempted to wipe out the resistance in numerous different years.

Now
I will be offended as a fan if they reboot the whole franchise. It would be like rebooting star wars for me. There is no logic or reason or way to reboot them.
Star Trek was different numerous possibilities in space. As time travel has been used before in that universe. Now I know Terminator is all about tine travel but there is no way you can reboot (like Star Trek) with causing catastrophic problems. Terminator uses tine as part of its story its concept its driving force. Star Trek used it once to reboot the franchise.

Looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table with Thor The Dark World, but come on, a fifth film as a continuation of the fourth seems so very, very natural. I actually would've like to have seen David Twohy direct a Terminator movie.

ooh this is just great, instead of going forward and taking off from T3...they are rebooting the franchise....WHAT ,
I thought Arnold's material was classic and remaking was a sick joke...well I guess the joke is on the movie fan...it makes me sick that we will never see the story continue in the manner it should have.
Proves that Hollywood is not valuing true classics at all.

I like this guy as a director. Not to keen on a reboot. It's a time travel movie, I am sure there are ways around this. Even bring back Michael Biehn.

I hate it when director announcements include the names of other directors who were considered for the job because those directors are always way more prestigious and/or interesting than the one who ultimately got the job.

I've always been a fan of Arnold's movies but you look forward seeing him play a Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 Terminator? Dude he just turned 66 this summer! It's time for a reality check pronto!

no no no. why reboot? why cant they do a "Band of Brothers" style of story set in the future. A assualt on Skynet which causes many of the resistence soldiers to be seperated and fighting to rejoin their squad, all leading up to a big final battle. nothing over the top. but a good solid war and showing the impacts of this war against a non stopping, hard to kill, emotionless enemy. introduce new characters that help define Reece and Connor. And Schwarzenegger, well i cant figure a way to

Man

I'm not dogging this guy directing (Ang Lee and Rian would have been great choices though and at least they are looking in the right area there), but like everyone else, a reboot. I remember the trailer for the last one had me pretty pumped and although it disappointed me (and I guess many more), I still would've lined up to see the next one. Terminator seems like one of those few franchises with that you can continue to do things with, but just rebooting? Although Anna Purna has a good

Although Anna Purna has a good track record of helping finance creative movies, but ppl should really be way more up in arms in this then ben Affleck as batman. Did any of you read that script from '02? Pretty bad.

Seriously? Ang Lee? Talk about dodging a bullet. He's a good director for drama and mild comedy, but The Hulk is a prime example that he doesn't really know how to make a fun action movie. Rian Johnson is a much sensible choice, but it could feel like a retread of his Looper theme.

Personally I don't see why it needs a reboot, if we could wipe the whole world's memory of the last two movies in the franchise.

I will say this. Strictly from a business perspective Alan Taylor makes more sense because he's already established as a journeyman director of TV and now film. Every other director on that list can be genuinely considered an auteur. Even though Ang Lee made The Hulk, I read it was only after people in his inner-circle convinced him it dealt with the same themes he was already interested in (and might be why so many didn't like it). Rian Johnson's movies are always pretty different, and he

This better not involve a handsome new Terminator using a time-phone to contact Schwarzenegger's denture-faced Terminator Prime, who's hanging out in a cave after fucking up the timeline.

I gave this thumbs down because I don't want it to be a pure reboot. However, maybe they're using the term loosely like the new Star Trek movies. Quasi sequel reboots. There's a lot of time travel involved in Terminator and that could be used as sort of a reset button. Having Arnold involved makes me hopeful. Like 40% hopeful.

I'd much rather if they'd just continued the story after T3 (which I actually really kind of like) with Arnie in leather and sunglasses holding a shotgun on a motorcycle.

Also...(sorry for posting twice) did anyone ever play the old Terminator game called Dawn of Fate? It had a really cool story, ending with Reese going back in time. That'd be neat too.

But I'm a bit confused, so this is a reboot, but it's also featuring Arnold? So is this going to be like GI Retaliation?
