Thorin Oakenshield is our thirteenth and final dwarf from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit!

Jul. 18, 2011by:

Unless you've been living in a hole in the ground, then you've likely been catching the awesome looks at the rather diverse Company of Dwarves from Peter Jackson's much-anticipated THE HOBBIT.

Last of the bunch but certainly not least is Richard Armitage as the dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield, depicted in the image here wielding the Elven blade 'Orcrist'.

As a young Dwarf prince, Thorin witnessed the destruction and terror wrought when a great fire-breathing Dragon attacked the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. After slaughtering many of Thorins kin, the great serpent, Smaug, entered The Lonely Mountain and took possession of its vast store of gold and jewels. No-one came to the aid of the surviving Dwarves, and thus, a once proud and noble race was forced into exile. Through long years of hardship, Thorin grew to be a strong and fearless fighter and revered leader. In his heart a fierce desire grew; a desire to reclaim his homeland and destroy the beast that had brought such misery upon his people. So when fate offers him an unusual ally, he seizes the chance for revenge.

Check out Thorin below (click for BIG), along with the entire bearded gang! THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY opens December 14, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: You'll be able to see Armitage this week in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.

Are all these pictures heavily photoshopped? Everyone's face looks like cheap rubber make-up.

Digging the diversity

In the book, JRRT rarely gave insight into what made the dwarves different. You knew Bombur was fat, and Kili and Fili were young and Oin and Gloin happened to be good with making fire, but that was about it. With a cast of 13 dwarves, it is easy in the book to see them as just a non-descript crowd, so I really like how PJ is going out of his way to do what he can to make each one a bit distinct from the others.

Thorin looks incredibly like a Klingon! But otherwise I'm real pleased with the look of the whole gang.

I was never really that interested in seeing an adaptation of the Hobbit, as it's such a kid friendly fairytale compared to LOTR, but what I have seen so far has turned me around.

I always pictured Thorin as older

for some reason, about the same age as Oin. Richard Armitage has definitely captured Thorin Oakenshield's fire but we'll have to wait on his pomposity and avarice. I'll be interested to see how Peter Jackson and Armitage handle the character.

Middle Girth!

As in my rather sizable boner. Very happy with this lot.
The two young, thin, brutes were a bit of a departure from what I had conceived in my head, but now they are my favorite. That smirk is priceless! Bring it.

AWESOME.

Thorin looks incredible. They all do. A diverse, fantastic-looking bunch. So glad this film went into the right hands. I know we're going to be in for something truly great here.

I liked all the Dwarves till Thorin. Maybe it's his extreme closeup instead of full body shot, or maybe its his gigantic forehead, lack of long beard or youth.

I'm just not sure but something doesn't sit well with me about him. Still, I'll reserve judgement.

I think all the dwarves look awesome. I like the variety and how each look has a lot of personality in it. I am very much looking forward to this film, it's just too bad that it's so far off.

From the few scenes in lord of the rings involving dwarfs (the prolouge and the council of elrond), they all pretty muched looked like variations of gimli. Glad they added more variety to the appearance.

I am really digging all the different looks but I am a bit surprised by Thorin. He really doesn't look very Dwarf like at all.

I think they did a great job making the cast look different but they still need to look like Dwarves and Thorin just looks more Klingon than Dwarf.

But hell I will wait until I see more before I cry foul.

Really wonder if JRD is regretting turning down the chance to play his Dad especially since it looks like the makeup appliances are much improved and much

The most swashbuckling of all the Dwarves. I suspected they might go that way with that actor, which is ok, but the majestic Thorin really needs to have a big beard. And they should have made him a bit older too.
