Thoughts after seeing the six-minute Dark Knight Rises prologue!

Dec. 13, 2011by: Mike Sampson

Last night, Christopher Nolan brought together a handful of journalists and friends in New York City at the largest IMAX screen in North America to show off the much ballyhooed prologue for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. I was lucky enough to have been invited and....?

Prior to the footage, an impeccibly-scarfed Nolan calmly stepped before the audience to speak a little bit about what we were going to see. But, perhaps surprisingly, he spoke very little about the footage. As he explained it, what he was really excited about was the format. After shooting some sequences of THE DARK KNIGHT with IMAX cameras, Nolan was dedicated to using the 15 perf 65mm/70mm film even more for the film's follow-up. And as he did with THE DARK KNIGHT, Nolan wanted to give fans a sneak peek of what the format could bring to the final installment in his Batman trilogy.

After a few short words, Nolan stepped aside and let us soak up the opening six minutes of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. While he did specifically ask us to not reveal what happens in the scene, I don't think it's spoiling anything to mention, like the DARK KNIGHT prologue focused on The Joker, this DARK KNIGHT RISES prologue centers on Bane.

The scene is visually as impressive as you can imagine. With James Cameron making a big push for 3D, I hope Nolan continues to push for the IMAX format; an experience I far prefer to seeing something in 3D. I'd rather see more films even partially use the 70mm format than continue the unnecessary use of 3D. The only problem is the limited number of "true IMAX" theaters (the TDKR prologue is opening in only 100 theaters worldwide). But when a movie can look this good shot in IMAX, it's worth getting more filmmakers on board and Nolan is just the guy to push that agenda. When one of the biggest films of 2012 will have over 50-minutes of IMAX footage, it's time for the rest of Hollywood to join the fray.

What's particularly impressive is that Nolan has used the IMAX camera to shoot dialogue-heavy sequences, something traditionally not done because of the loud operating volume of the cameras. Nolan and his team had to ADR all the dialogue shot during these sequences, a cumbersome addition to the post-production schedule but absolutely worth it when you see the scope of the film. Speaking of dialogue and ADR...

Visual beauty aside, there is one problem with the footage and it's a big one: Bane's voice. As spoken by Tom Hardy behind the character's mask, his dialogue is almost entirely indecipherable. He has a significant amount of dialogue in this particular scene and I understood maybe five or six words he said. I caught something about "the fire rises" and "pain" and that was with much concentration.

This is not just me nitpicking. Bane's dialogue is a real problem and needs to be addressed. I've been told that the labored breathing and speech of Bane is very much a deliberate choice by Nolan and Hardy but that dramatic affect can be achieved without compromising the film and making an already complex plot more difficult to follow (as it was, it took a lot of post-footage contemplation just to figure out exactly what was going on).

After the six minutes, we were treated to a truncated look at the upcoming trailer, which will run before prints of SHERLOCK HOLMES: GAME OF SHADOWS (not sure yet when it will debut online). There's a lot to like in there including looks at all the major characters in action plus some impressive new additions to Batman's arsenal (OMG The Batwing).

I'm confident Nolan will address the Bane issue in post-production, either through ADR or perhaps even subtitles, and with that, save audiences a lot of trouble.

The prologue will be screening for fans across the United States, Canada and the UK tonight at 10:00pm. If you're one of the lucky ones who got into Operation Early Bird, leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Prologue

I couldn't help myself and checked out the leaked prologue. Couldn't make out much but Bane's dialogue I could for the most part. And this was from leaked footage! I'm thinking part of the problem is a lot of these IMAX theaters don't have the proper surround sound for films and dialogue yet. I went to the midnight show of Dark Knight at the Air and Space Museum IMAX back in 08' and the picture was amazing, but I remember thinking the dialogue scenes were "quiet" for a movie theater. That plus

That plus Bane's unique voice would add to the problem. I bet if they showed a dialogue scene in a regular theater a lot more people would understand him at least. Whether they'd still hate on the voice like the one batman uses is another matter entirely...

Is it possible...

...that he is only really hard to understand because of the plane engines and other background noise (not to give much away) in this particular scene?...I thought it was a great scene...and honestly, I am not one of Nolan's loyal...I still can't see how this movie can be as great as the devotees are clammering...but, the scene was great

saw it in toronto

even got a t-shirt which was cool. it was a visually amazing taste of what is to come from this movie, possably one of the best stunt/action scene i can remeber seeing. but i agree Bane is 95% incoherent, I COULD NOT MAKE OUT MORE THEN 2 WORDS TOTAL, so i really hope they go back and fix the worst of it, if not all of his lines

I just watched the bootleg version of it and thought it was pretty good...got me excited. I was expected to not understand banes voice at all but I understood it quite clearly actually eexcept for one part where it really does sound like jibberish. I doubt they are gonna fix it tho.

Transcript of Banes lines:
{CIAguy has one of the hooded goons at gunpoint & hung out the plane window}
CIAguy: Tell me about Bane! Why does he wear the mask!...A lot of loyalty for a hired gun.
Bane (still hooded): Well perhaps hes wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
CIAguy: At least you can talk. Who are you?
Bane (still hooded): It doesnt matter who we are, what matters is our plan.

Bane: No one cared who I was

Everything's been said anyway...

Bane's voice should def remain indistinct - it's Nolan's batman ... always ahead of the curve. Cutting edge if you ask me.

I'll be honest...

I really dug the prologue...just like with TDK, I'm pumped to see this movie. However, I unlike so many other people didn't have issues hearing or understanding Bane. Not sure why a lot of others are saying that did. Hmm....

First off, I didn't read this article because... well, I'm not an idiot.
What I wondered about was why no film has ever been entirely shot with IMAX cameras. Now I know and fully understand:
"the cameras are much larger and heavier than standard cameras and as they are noisier it makes dialogue recording difficult."
Update: I can't believe 18 of you muppets misunderstood my post. I didn't mean I'm not interested in TDKR, I didn't read the article because I knew it would be rife with spoilers.

I dug the prologue, AND the free bat tshirt they gave us on the way into the theater here in San Francisco. Was Bane a little hard to hear? Honestly, he was much more articulate and easier to understand than Sylvester Stallone has been in any of his movies. Also, the din from the airplane and rushing wind didn't help matters either, but I still understood what he said.
All in all, it was a nice bit of action that was beautifully shot in a format that is far superior to that shitty 3D gimmicky

I definitely want to see it again, but I can wait until June or July to see the whole thing properly....in IMAX of course.

The Bane voice thing...maybe that was on purpose? We'll see. It can't have slipped by all the filmmakers and actors.

Just came back from the theater and I want to explain why I'm giving this one the "red"!
As mentioned above and below already. Bane. I REALLY REALLY hope they do something about it. You can't understand a word of what the guy is saying!!! At first most people thought it was a problem with the audio but 2 seconds after you get that it's the way it's supposed to be. And it's a big FAIL. It's not bitching for the sake of bitching. And I can tell you there will be a LOT of bitching if they don't

Subtitles would work...but then you would still wonder how the hell anybody else in the movie is supposed to understand the little guy when he speaks. Oh, and did I just say little guy? Yeah, Bane's not nearly as big as he should be either.

Good...but

The footage was pretty astounding, especially that they seemed to have achieved most of that practiaclly (when you see it, youll know what I mean). The major problem is Bane's voice, and I have a feeling that it wont change unless the studio forces to. That is the way it works most of the time. I work in the industry and things rarely change unless an Exec pushes for it.

I personally would like to understand the main character when he speaks, but that's just me.

Still have absolutely no

I just came back from seeing the trailer in Montreal and since I signed no non-disclosure agreements, I'm gonna guess I can speak of it freely.

Of course, ***SPOILER ALERT***

The prologue starts with Gordon talking of how Harvey Dent had been an influence on him and the city at Dent's funeral.

We immediatly cut to Dr. Leonid Pavel (the one from all the promo stuff) being escorted in a small plane in what seems to be a South American country. With him are three hooded mercenaries who

The prologue starts with Gordon talking of how Harvey Dent had been an influence on him and the city at Dent's funeral.

We immediatly cut to Dr. Leonid Pavel (the one from all the promo stuff) being escorted in a small plane in what seems to be a South American country. With him are three hooded mercenaries who were captured for helping Bane.

As the plane takes off, they try to interrogate the three mercennaries, saying that only the one that will talk will get to stay on the flying plane. After a few tries on the first two, the third man speaks. The man is revealed to be Bane.

Afterwards, all shit break loose. I could try to describe the scene, but I doubt it would do it any favor. I'll just say this : the plane gets hi-jacked by another plane and gets pretty much torn to pieces by some of Bane's men.

Now, there was a lot of exposition going on through Bane, but as it was stated in this article, Bane's voice is ABSOLUTELY INDECIPHERABLE. Actually, a lot of people around me in the thater were a bit pissed to have missed what Bane said last before leaving the crashing plane, because it seemed important.

Two other things I didn't quite get. At some point, Bane receives a body bag from the other plane containing what seems to be either a man in a coma or a corpse and proceeds to transfer some blood from Dr Pavel to the bodybag guy. Why? No clue.

Other thing I didn't quite get (mainly because of Bane's dialogue) was that one of Bane's men actually stays on the crashing lane. Another thing I didn't get.

All in all, it was still pretty impressive to see that scene in IMAX and people (even though being a bit confused at the end) cheered before leaving the theater.

Well worth it, but if you're gonna go see the thing before Mission Impossible, pay ultra close attention to what Bane says, cause you might miss it.

Chills

Aside from a few moments towards the end, I didn't think Bane's voice was too bad. Yes it was a little difficult to make things out, but I'm sure it will be adjusted before the movie is released. That sizzle reel at the end gave me goosebumps. It's going to be a long wait until July.

meh

I thought to myself, "self, he can't be right. No way Nolan would purposefully make someone impossible to understand." I couldn't understand a bloddy word he said, even preparing to have to work hard to understand. Also, the prologue lacked the epicness of The Dark Night. I didn't find Bane threatening in the least bit. Perhaps it was because he sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher...

Oh man... always had the feeling Bane's voice was going to be a problem. Ever since we saw that spy video in the stadium. I was like... WTF? I truly hope this will be fixed, but my concern is: why would he show the prologue in such a state (unfinished voice for Bane)... unless he intends on using it like this? This would suck major ass.

I think it is intended to be this way. Because NO WAY would they show unfinished IMAX footage. It's to hype (even more?) the movie. This? This I think hurts it... But then again, do Nolan fanboys care?

Bane's indecipherable dialogue is definitely an easy fix (his mouth IS covered after all) but I'm not so sure that Nolan will change it. There was certainly plenty of people who disapproved of Batman's voice in Batman Begins and he didn't change that for The Dark Knight. In any case, the movie will undoubtedly be impressive.

It's already been pointed out many times but there's absolutely no reason to be concerned about Bane's voice. Nolan can do anything he wants to clean it up if he chooses to do so.

If Bane's voice is really that big of a problem, then the inevitable Batman-Bane conversation is going to be hilarious.

Still pumped for the movie though.

Totally spoil something!

While I am glad to hear a positive review about this, Sampson totally gave away The Batwing! I had no idea that it was going to be in this film. I've tried to avoid any news about this film as possible, so here I thought you were just going to give a brief synopsis of what Nolan said. I had no idea you were going to spoil something that's kind of a big deal!

So waitaminute. He spoiled you by mentioning that the Batwing was going to be.....in the trailer?

I assume you would have gotten just as mad at Nolan and Warner Bros once you saw said trailer, am I right? Because that would be equally as "spoilerish" if you hadn't heard of it here.

People like you are a nuissance to the internet. He didn't ruin a major plot point, he didn't give away a death, he didn't spoil the ending, he mentioned the BATWING. Yeah, the image you'll see in a week when the prologue is online and the images are out.. the stuff that will be floating around in the trailer in 2 months. Come on man, get over it.. that's not a spoiler.

Now I'm not saying the writer of this spoiled anything, or that Nolan spoiled anything. They can do what they want to promote their film. At the same time, I think it would have been a very explosive opening night moment to be completely surprised by the coolest of Batman's arsenal. I'll agree with you on that.

You call that a Batwing? It's almost as bad as the Batmobile...

I have my passes but as the time approaches, I'm feeling a little silly about making a 30 minute drive and standing in line for an hour to ensure I get a seat. I may just wait for it to leak online which will most likely be at about 10:10pm.
