Three How to Train Your Dragons, Four Madagascars and Six Kung Fu Pandas

Dec. 3, 2010by:

Dreamworks Animation has a creative plan for the next decade or so:

GET PAID.

If it made money once, it'll make money two, three or six times, right? Emprie caught up with Jeffrey Katzenberg who laid out just how many sequels we'll see from the three tentpole properties of the studio, which is three Dragons, four Madagascars and six, count 'em six Pandas.

"So today I can tell you pretty succinctly where Madagascar goes. Ultimately they will come back to New York, and they will come to terms with that, which they will do in this next chapter. Because of the way that movie concludes there’s probably one more for them…"

"Yeah, there’s probably a fourth there. Kung Fu Panda actually has 6 chapters to it, and we’ve mapped that out over the years. How To Train Your Dragon is at least three: maybe more, but we know there are a least three chapters to that story. There are actually 8 books."

Lord almighty, SIX Kung Fu Panda movies? It's like the animated version of SAW. And do people actually like MADAGASCAR? I see they keep making them, yet I'm never quite sure why. This makes two HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON sequels seem reasonable, though I have trouble imagining the quality will be maintained from the first one.

Are you pumped for over a half dozen more Dreamworks sequels? Think of all those raised eyebrow movie posters!

Extra Tidbit: What, no OVER THE HEDGE chapters 2-8?

Christ all Mighty!!!! 4 MADAGASCAR??? OMG!!!! the 1st one was awesome, but the 2nd one was awfull. i only watched the 2nd one because of the penguins :P
now, as far as How to train your dragon is concerned, i can see another movie, but 4??? 4 is a bit much isnt it?
kung fu panda is another story all together, i can see a few more, since its kind of a super hero thing, so panda can fight a few different villains in each movie, and as long as they make it fun and fresh, its all good in the

Is this all Tassi can come up with?

Ever notice how there's an awful lot of Disney advertisements on Joblo.com? Let's be real. Dreamworks isn't so stupid. They don't typically pursue endeavors that are not lucrative. That being said, I cannot wait for Leo DiCaprio's Dreamworks debut.

ummm.. this news is straight from Dreamworks. You're out of your mind delirious man. You trash Disney for making a Cars sequel and being "money-hungry" but when Dreamworks maps out 4 sequels for 3 franchises it's Dreamworks bashing?!?!?!

Ridiculous..

Kung Fu Panda getting a few sequels? All right. It's logical, considering Shrek seems to be done with, and Kung Fu Panda is on-par to be as popular as the Shrek series. All right, no big deal. It wasn't all that much of a masterpiece before, and I think it's okay for them to continue with a couple more, if not just for the fans of the original. It could be a fun series.

What's "ridiculous", though, is the supposed sequels to How to Train Your Dragon. I might look back on this comment

What's "ridiculous", though, is the supposed sequels to How to Train Your Dragon. I might look back on this comment in a few years and say "Wow, I had no faith in them. The sequels were so amazing, how could I be so silly?", but let's be real: That's not happening.

How to Train Your Dragon was the closest Dreamworks has ever come to making a Pixar-level film. A true animated masterpiece. In fact, I would almost put it on-par with Toy Story 3. I'm a little torn on that one.

I just can't believe they'd ruin such a masterpiece with unnecessary sequels. If it made money once, it will make money again, indeed. But if it's a masterpiece the first time... they'll have to reach for a miracle if the second one, and let alone the third, will live up to their first film's masterpiece quality.

As for Madagascar: What. Ever. I couldn't care less either way about that one.

This is why Pixar is kicking their ass, they're going to over saturate their characters. Pixar may do sequels but all of them have been years past their originals/other sequels. Still, I really dig Kung-Fu Panda and How to train your dragon so I guess I'd like to see those characters again. Whatever happened to a good ol' fashioned trilogy?

Animation or not, no story needs more than three movies!!!

Except Harry Potter or James Bond.

Oh, and "Think of all those raised eyebrow movie posters!" LOL!

first its ok

just when you think Dreamworks is catching up to Pixar in quality with movies like "Kung Fu Panda" and "How To Train Your Dragon" they do a bunch of sequels which are sub-par. Sure Toy Story did 2 and 3 and Cars 2 is coming but they were all as good as the first. Shrek 3 and 4, and Madagascar 2 were only mediocre

Good for dreamworks

Like an 8 year old will complain about the quality. Kids will watch the same damn movie 50 times, give em some new fresh movie with the same characters they love. Keep the sequels coming to kids movies.

Wow... really? Why did the Dragon one function, because it was fresh no? As well as Kung Fu Panda. Dreamworks has a terrible track record with sequels

Dreamworks is a fucking joke, Pixar puts soo much detail and creativity into their movies that they can only make one a year and they blow everybody away every time.

Disney makes more than one a year and I don't remember the last time I was "blown away" by a Pixar movie. Maybe if I was a 65 year old woman seeing Up, but oops, I'm not.

'Kung Fu Panda' and 'How to Train Your Dragon' are great movies, and I'm excited about sequels for both franchises, but Madagascar is a terrible franchise and needs to quit while it's sucking.

Calm down

That number of sequels needs some context. While they are planning on making lots of sequels, they're only making one per year. And the goal is three movies per year. So original movies will outweigh sequels.

Holy shit. I don't know what to say. I just don't what to say. And here I thought that Dreamworks might actually become a better studio than Pixar, what with Pixar's lineup consisting of nothing but unnecessary sequels but this, this is just stunningly stupid. Congrats Pixar, I guess your position as the best animation studio is safe.

I really do hope he's joking or exaggerating. Six fucking Kung Fu Panda movies! Did they not learn from Shrek, which was a bigger franchise than KFP, and that

How To Train Your Dragon I understand because I believe it was based on a series of books so they'll just adapt another one but the other two are just ridiculous.

This goes without saying, Dreamworks is less original than Pixar

It's sad that Dreamworks' plan for the next decade is sequels of its "popular" franchises. Did they not learn anything from the Shreks? I didn't even bother seeing Madagascar 2, so I won't even bother with the next 2. And I never got a chance to see How to Train Your Dragon, but I heard good things. I assume we'll be getting a Megamind sequel report any day now...

Apparently we posted similar comments at the same time. To be fair though, as I stated in my post, Pixars lineup for the next couple of years is also sequels, mighty unnecessary ones at that.

Don't act like you know about Dreamworks lineup, because you've already proven you don't. Go research their upcoming original movies (that we know about) then come back to the table with something worthwhile to say
