Three Xs plus three Ds equals a new Vin Diesel xXx in 3D

04.01.2010

While it pays to be wary of movie announcements on April 1st, this one seems pretty plausible: Vin Diesel and director Rob Cohen are re-teaming for a new xXx flick, in 3D.

It's been in the works for a while, and even got a script titled xXx: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE. But then Cohen departed to make his big-budget period action project MEDIEVAL (which has apparently crumbled) and Diesel revved up for another FAST AND FURIOUS.

Now Deadline says the xXxtreme superspy will be back from the seemingly dead, but has left Sony for a new home at Paramount, who must be desperate for a franchise. And naturally, it will be in 3D. As Cohen says: "I feel what we did in the beginning of the decade was bring a different attitude to the action movie and a different kind of hero. With the new 3D instrument and the techniques I can apply, we can create a different kind of cutting-edge experience in 3D by shooting it that way from the beginning the way James Cameron did AVATAR."

Deadline also says that most of the action will take place in Europe, and that Sam Jackson will be back as xXx's scarfaced handler.

The real question is: besides Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen, who else has actually been anxious for another xXx movie?

Extra Tidbit: Cohen's STEALTH and the hilariously terrible Ice Cube xXx sequel STATE OF THE UNION are both high on my list of guilty pleasures. Gotta appreciate a movie where a Special Forces guy unironically says "I thought of you every night I spent in prison!"

I'm down as long as Diesel, Sam Jackson, and Cohen are back. The first one was good and I'm pretending I didn't see the second one.

Excellent. This is how 3D needs to be done. With the director saying, yeah i want to do it the right way from the start just like Cameron did and he really feels like he can make it awesome using it. Unlike other films which studios are forcing to be made in 3D without the directors even having an input and other movies being converted into 3D post-production which looks like shit. And besides, I am excited to see the boundaries pushed with this new and really good 3D tech. Action movies like

this could be good, I'm glad they're bringing Sam Jackson back as well, hopefully the story will ignore that POS Ice Cube film altogether. I'm probably gonna watch it in good ol' 2D, though.

2 things; 1 - James Cameron didn't invent 3D and nor was he the first to utilize it. He just made the most money from it so I would hardly consider him a point of reference.

And 2 - I wish all these studios would just stop. 3D, like cupajoe said so well below, is going to be annoying and overblown tripe soon - VERY soon. Especially if they keep taking more and more money out of the pockets of the people that keep them in business. Fucking tripe. All of it.

I really do think with all these lame movies (I am not calling this movie lame already but you know what I mean)getting the 3D treatment, this 3D novelty will burn its self out within the next year or two.

Rob Cohen shouldn't even be allowed to say the words "James Cameron".

This series shouldn't even exist. It's awful. xXx was only watchable because of Asia Argento and xXx 2 was beyond excruciating.

But poor Vin has nowhere else to go in his career I guess.

I liked the second one a hell of a lot more than the original. Vin should stick with Riddick and just devote his time to doing it right and not shitting on it by making it PG-13 again.

Cohen has never impressed me. If I want a dumb action flick I'll go to Michael Bay. And Diesel deserves better than this. I can understand the fast & furious and Riddick films, since they are guilty pleasures, but XXX was forgettable.

Look...

I like Vin Diesel and I loved the first XXX movie and am glad that they are making another one, but doing this in 3D is so effin dumb. Do any directors have the balls to do any more movies in 2D anymore? Cause I am still a fan of 2D. Anyone else?
