Tim Burton may direct a live-action Pinocchio starring Robert Downey Jr.

Jan. 9, 2012by:

When you think of Pinocchio, you obviously think of the dark, twisted, and macabre stylings of Tim Burton, yes?

Well, if you don't, you may have to open your mind a little since according to THR, Burton is in talks to direct a live-action version of the classic Italian children's book by Carlo Collodi. Even weirder I think, Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly very interested in taking on the role of 'Geppetto', the woodcarver who creates Pinocchio. Isn't RDJ a little young for the part? This is just a hunch, but I smell a "daddy issues" re-interpretation, a la Burton's CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. But hey, while we're ignoring age, maybe they can shrink Johnny Depp down Hobbit style to play the titular wooden liar himself! (Shit... that's actually not too far-fetched.)

Neither Burton nor Downey are locked down, though Warner Bros. is eager to get a commitment from both parties in order to fast-track the project. Meanwhiile, Burton is finishing up work on his 1960s gothic soap adaptation DARK SHADOWS while Downey can currently be seen in the sadly mediocre SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS.
Extra Tidbit: Guillermo del Toro is currently overseeing the development of a stop-motion animated version of Pinocchio.

The saddest part of the article is the last line about "Game of Shadows" being mediocre. Since the website gave it a great review, and called iot better than the first. Just goes to show how much this site has gone down hill.

Johnny Depp will play the fox with the top hat because if there's a character in a Tim Burton movie that has the potential to wear a top hat, Johnny Depp is going to play it.

There are a ton of original ideas from his LACMA exhibit. Why not any one of those?

Sigh

I'm just surprised Helena Bonham Carter isn't playing Geppetto.

NO!

Nothing Tim Burton ever does is dark or twisted. I hate that people always think just cause hes going to be handling an old story or fairy tale thats its going to be all dark and twisted and weird! He never does that to anything he just makes it bad and wastes Deep's talent! Ed wood was the only good thing Burtons ever done but my whole point is wether you like him or not you can admit hes not dark and twisted with all the crap he does.

He was perfect to direct the first two Batman films with Keaton. And Beetlejuice and Sweeney Todd were great films as well.

Something original this time?

No, let's take a story that's already creepy and make it a shit load creepier!
Look up "Tim Burton's Secret Formula" if you haven't already seen it.

Burton hasn't made anything remotely creepy since Beetlejuice. Don't kid yourself.

UGH!!

I've kind of lost faith in Tim Burton. Charlie & The Chocolate Factory was awful, Alice In Wonderland was terrible and I have no interest in a live-action Pinocchio.

...

I like how everyone pretty much hates TIm Burton and he keeps reminding people why. And RDJ is a good addition to any film, so that's the other little motif Burton has going, uninspired casting.

Hopefully this is his chance to turn it around. I think RDJ would make a good Geppetto. I personally think that Ed Wood is Tim Burtons best film. It's amazing, one of Depps best too.

Uggh one of the most over rated directors in the biz. Going to turn this into a creepfest featuring his usual crew and of course his homeless chic wife. I love RDJ and hope he stays far away from this future mess.

This could be pretty cool. Burton has a pretty decent catalog of material, prolific and stylistic, like him or hate him, all his films are memorable. RDJ would be a great addition to a Burton film.

The pairing of Downey Jr and Burton would be great to see. Could see Depp playing or voicing(?) Pinocchio.

My imagined version of Pinocchio always turns into a struggle between the Disney animated film and the Fables comic.

I would love to see Burton make this, and RDJ is always great! I've actually recently read the original Pinoccio and it is a rather bizarre tale, would be a nice fit!

I'm a huge Tim Burton fan. Love his creepy art style. There, I've said it. Now that I got this off my chest I could buy this whole idea. Maybe they're getting younger actors to play older roles for sequel purposes.
Now...looking at this Tim Burton picture I can't help but wonder if he's taking a huge dump on someone elses garden.

I always thought Pinocchio was a little creepy particularly the part where the children get taken to Pleasure Island and then they turn into donkeys.

This may prove interesting. I do still want to see more original projects from Burton though, not just 'his vision' of classic tales. Beetlejuice 2 would be great though.
