Time for another regeneration! Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who

06.03.2013

This weekend was a sad one for some Whovians when it was announced that the Eleventh Doctor-- Matt Smith was leaving DOCTOR WHO after the Christmas Special. As the series has become immensely popular within the last few years, many people have been introduced to Smith as their Doctor, though many fans will tell those new to the show to start with the Ninth Doctor (at least I do).

I remember being firmly against Smith after David Tennant departed, but after a long time without DOCTOR WHO I finally gave in. While Smith may not be Tennant, he brought something memorable to the role. As they say, you never forget your first Doctor.

Smith has accomplished many things in his time on the show reaching 30 million viewers in the UK alone and even the first to get a BAFTA nomination for the role. The actor released a statement on his exit to the BBC:

Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt."

Smith has been filming on the directorial debut of Ryan Gosling's HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER which tells the story of, "A single mother swept into a dark underworld, while her teenage son discovers a road that leads him to a secret underwater town." There are already tons of rumors on the next regeneration ranging from Helen Mirren to Ben Whishaw.

After four years, we are sad to hear of Smith's departure but are ready for a new adventure!

Matt Smith has been without question my favourite of the new-era Who. Sad to see him go.

Season Finale shocker

I did not realize he had done 4 seasons already. I won't spoil, but I was shocked at the new introduction. I like it though, and as sad as I am to see Smith go ... He did a great job, and it is time to take on new acting challenges. The only downside to playing Who, is you do not get to play other characters in small to large movies, perfect a performance in theater or develop a character over the course of a traditional series. Actually incredibly excited about next season.

Make it a woman to fit the story, right? Or are you against a woman Doctor in general?

They've already shown the next Doctor at the end of the last episode. The episode ends with the next Doctor making his appearance, with the caption; "Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor".

@psyonlikx:

I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be an incarnation of the Doctor that hasn't been shown on the show, not the next one. The Doctor doesn't know what he'll be in the future, but he seemed to know that one well and referred to him in the past tense. The theory I've seen is that he is the incarnation that fought in the Time War. He did say to Clara that one had done terrible things and wasn't worthy of the name Doctor.

Sad to see him go

I didn't like Matt Smith when they first introduced him as the doctor but he quickly grew on me. now it's strange to imagine another in his place, but I'm sure Steven Moffat will choose wisely.
