Tintin gets a new trailer full of action and...interesting CGI

Jul. 11, 2011by: Paul Tassi

You know, I want TINTIN to be amazing. I loved the books as a kid, and we really do need a new adventure/mystery type series that doesn't star Nicolas Cage. But will it live up to its potential?

You wouldn't imagine that Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg could team up to make a bad film, but that being said, I'm worried the visuals here might be too distracting. This second trailer shows a lot of new footage, and while the action looks cool, I can't say that I love these character animations.

The features are exaggerated to look like the comic characters, which I understand, but it doesn't quite translate into characters that are easy on the eyes, and they look downright weird at times. The movie looks good, but the CGI? I don't know...

LOL! I am doing CGI professionally for 10 years now and I never heard crap like that! MoCap is a tool for CGI!!

I'm loving all the comments about how this could have just been live action. It's SUPPOSED TO LOOK THIS WAY PEOPLE! It's an old french comic book and the characters are supposed to look a little surreal. This, people, is something new, and something fresh.

I have no complaints about the animation style. I just don't think it looks very interesting... I suppose I'll wait and see what the consensus is once it's released and decide then.

This looks awesome

Get over yourself, Pixar is not the only animation company that has the potential; to make good films. Get off your high horse, Tassi.

WTF?

I really don't understand the haters, especially saying the animation isn't good. How can you watch that and not be pumped about a visual feast through what looks to be a great adventure films. The world is becoming so cynical its unbelievable.

Hmmm. Their body movements look like as if they're wearing full body performance capture leotards.

Really looks like shit...

What's the point of using this technology if it only makes things look stiff, but especially considering the fact that nothing in that trailer looks like it couldn't have been achieved with a mix of live action and special effects.

I'm hyped, but...

it does look like it is stuck somewhere between realism and stylized, which leaves a kind of limbo feeling- I liked in The Incredibles when everyone was so cartoony they avoided the Uncanny Valley feeling. I'll still see it in the theatre, though, you bet. Just feels a bit middle ground style wise.

I think the film looks great. The action is fantastic and it seems very well written and voice acted. The animation does seem like a bit of a mix between the cartoonish and realistic, but it seems like it's purposefully done like that. I don't have a problem with it though. I think it's pretty unique and I dig that they are going for something a little different.

All the nitpicking about the CG clouds the fact that that was a great trailer. The Goonies meets Uncharted. A child's adventure tale told on a grand, action-packed scale. Perfect Holiday season release fare.

I'm less worried about the CGI than I am that Spielberg might replace all the guns and bazookas with walkie talkies prior to release.

Paul, either you lost your imagination a long time ago, you're a nitpicky fanboy, or you're just trying to stir up shit to make your article stand out. I'll bet on the latter. Do you guys get paid extra if you receive the most comments?

Honestly, I remember watching a bit of Tintin here and there when I was a child, but had forgotten all about it until about a year ago when I read something about this movie online. Just want to make it clear that I'm not a fanboy, and that I think this

Just want to make it clear that I'm not a fanboy, and that I think this trailer looks pretty damn cool. I didn't see a single "distracting" thing about it, because a) I'm not a moron, and b) I'm not getting paid to.

Most of you professional critics really do suck, man. You've got a quota to fill, and a desire/literal need to stay on the readers/listeners minds (whether it's through actual relevancy or not), so you just overspeak and nitpick to the point that you basically just start making shit up.

It can't seem to decide whether it wants to look photo-realistic (like Zemeckis attempted and failed at), or if it wants to look cartoony a la Pixar. It's a weird middle ground, but the result isn't that bad. But I still think Tin looks like Tilda Swinton, especially in that last shot.

Looks fine...

Looks pretty cool to me. I would have preferred a 2D animated film in the style of the books, which, to me, would look cooler and seems like it would be cheaper. Can't they do something like shade computer graphics to appear penciled in (like video games such as Valkyria Chronicles)? That would look impressive

It looks cool and all.

But I don't understand why this couldn't have been done in live action? Other than having the characters look like the comic, there isn't a real reason other than to just do it that way. The settings are all things that could exist in real life (and look damn good), so why spend all that extra effort?

I missed out

First of all loved this trailer it seems to be the tintin i wanted to watch as a kid, with action engaging characters, fun comic relief, thats what i wanted as a kid. This movie looks like its gonna satisfy my inner child, and the reason is because it like many motion captures, is a serious telling of a fantastic tale. beowulf, the polar express, and christmas carol, i enjoyed each of them for different reasons, but for the most part they are quite dry, with the exception of polar express which

Although the MoCap still looks creepy as hell and the british/scottish accents are a bit unsettling for someone who grew up with the original cartoons in french (Tintin is belgian after all), I can finally say I'm sold on the movie after this kickass trailer.

Just Stop!

I don't care who makes movies like this, and you can tell by my Avatar how I feel about PJ. This just looks terrible.

CGI is supposed to be CGI not Mo-Cap.

And I know Gollum looks great but that is a completely different thing, he is not supposed to look human, so your eye doesn't see the offness of the character.

They simply do not look right, they are stiff, dead, and out of proportion.

Plus seeing a tween with a gun was just unsettling, I mean this is not Kick Ass, its appears

Hopefully the whole Mo-Cap as realistic humans will die a terrible death in a fire along with 3D soon, but I fear the worst.

Blah...........
