Titanic set for 3D re-release next year on the 100th anniversary of the ship setting sail
TITANIC is one of those movies that seemed good when it came up but after the hype dies down and you revisit it a few years later...well, not so good. In fact, I've never watched TITANIC again since the first time I saw it in theaters in 1997. But Paramount, Fox and James Cameron are hoping that I'm in the minority.
Today the trio announced that TITANIC will be re-released in theaters on April 6, 2012 in 3D. Remember that tragic scene when all the people on the ship fell to their death as the ship sank into the ocean? Now they'll be falling right...in...your...LAP! (That was my attempt at a voiceover for the commercial.)
The release will mark the 100th anniversary of the Titanic setting sail, which took place on April 10th, 1912. Cameron first announced the news back at the 2009 Comic-Con and has been working on the 3D conversion since.
Says Cameron of the re-release: "There's a whole generation that's never seen TITANIC as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be TITANIC as you've never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike."
The only upside I see to this is that Cameron doesn't fuck around when it comes to his 3D so at least you know you'll be getting a top quality product. But still... Would you pay to go see TITANIC in 3D?

2-D to 3-D conversion can't work
Any conversion is guess work and approximations, which is why all post-production 2-D to 3-D conversions suck.
Cameron's reputation for good 3-D rides on Avatar which was filmed in 3-D. His reputation can't fix the fact this Titanic wasn't filmed with enough camera angles to make 3-D work right.

It will sink
So you cant really talk about how bad it is when you revisit it since you only saw it once...

Aww, heck naw!
One more thing.
EPIC FAIl.
Yawn
I'm a unashamed fan of Titanic (Haven't watched it since 98 though)... James Cameron is an absolute machine. The real big flaw of the whole Titanic thing, IMO, was Celine Dion.
That being said James Cameron has two chances of me seeing this in post conversion 3D... none and fuck all.

I loved the movie and I still do. I'll be glad to see it again in theater and I know Cameron won't fuck the conversion!
I'd like a IMAX 3D release as well, but the movie might be to long for that...

No amount of "immersion" can compensate for the dimness in picture. Never understood the insane popularity of watching cinema with sunglasses on.

Cameron doeesn't fuck around when it comes to shooting 3D, true, but this was a post conversion from 2D material and we all know how those go (they don't...) I don't care how long they spent on it. Still a conversion. Epic marketing win for Jim Cameron because maybe 1% of movie goers know the difference between real and post conversion 3D.

tidbit:
Congratulations, you win the 'should be put to sleep my a vet' award.
BTW: Titanic was pretty awesome when it came out and still is.
