TMNT co-creator Peter Laird shares his thoughts on Michael Bay's recent statements

Mar. 21, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Peter Laird is speaking out on the recent statements made by Michael Bay.

The director did the ultimate no-no and told the fans to "chill". While that wasn't the smartest thing to do, it's also not cool to mess with the Turtles origin story. Laird shared his thoughts on his blog:

"I have had several requests from TMNT fans during this past week to comment on the idea of the Turtles being "reimagined" as aliens for the upcoming TMNT movie to be produced by Michael Bay. A few people -- who don't seem to understand that I am no longer in control of the property -- want me to stop this, somehow. Obviously, I can't do that, even if I wanted to."

"But I would actually encourage TMNT fans to swallow the "chill pill" Mr. Bay recently suggested they take, and wait and see what might come out of this seemingly ill-conceived plan. It's possible that with enough truly creative brainpower applied to this idea, it might actually work. I'm not saying it's probable, or even somewhat likely but it IS possible."

"However, as I have pondered this further, I have realized that in one way it IS truly a genius notion. Let me explain"

"Over the years, I have made no secret of my distaste for what I consider to be the weak, facile, creatively bankrupt idea which can be summed up like this:"

"If FOUR Ninja Turtles are good, then FIVE (or more) Ninja Turtles MUST be better!"

"It was in large part this brain-dead notion that led to the creation of the execrable "Venus de Milo" character in the blessedly short-lived live action TV series "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation". And I can't tell you how many times we got mail in the early years of the Turtles from people who thought it was simply an amazing idea to do a "fifth Turtle", and how many times those same people suggested that this fifth Turtle be named "Picasso". And many times, the brilliant idea to explain this extra Turtle was that, instead of there being just four pet shop turtles in that glass bowl in the origin story, there were really FIVE."

"Sigh."

Wait and see? It's not like this is a Fincher or Nolan adaptation, it is Michael "pew pew fuck sense" Bay, there is no fucking need to "wait and see" Everyone knows exactly how this is going to end up.

Non-fans aren't gonna care if the turtles are mutants or aliens. But the fans do care. Wouldn't it make sense to make everyone happy and just stick with the source material. To steal a cheesy line from X-Men First Class: "Mutant and Proud!"

GUYS! GUYS!

People tend to forget the god-awful Mr. Bay is not directing this! Only his company is producing it! In actuality, it is the director of...
Darkness Falls...
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Beginning...
Battle Los Angeles...
Ya, this movie is going to suck on every level, no waiting to see necessary.

And seriously though, this alien shit is literally the worst thing ever. I'm by no means a TMNT fan, but I just can't stand this type of completely unnecessary re-imaging of iconic

And with constant examples of comic book films fucking up costumes/looks tremendously (Amazing Spider-man, Man of Steel, X-men First Class, TDKR, just about everything),
I am really fucking scared to see how these Alien Ninja Turtles will look.

Toys Toys Toys!

Remember guys, at this point - this movie is only being made to sell all of the merchandise along with it. Fat suits are sitting in a room and thinking: Ok if we have them come from outer space - we can then have a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Spaceship that we can charge $89.99 for. We can add a level in the video game that takes place in space and rendering stars in the background is cheap, and ooze? Yea, lets make it a juice drink hyped up with caffeine.

Anyone who thinks that a new TMNT

Peter Laird...

I also completely disagree with this guy's analogy. He is missing the point. The addition of the 5th turtle, like it or not, was just that... an addition. She was simply a continuation of the previously established universe and mythology. If they wanted, she could have left any episode and things would be the same. No harm, no foul.

This is completely different. They are now rewriting the whole basis of the TMNT, and changing them from ground zero in a way that they can never be the

They will always have been aliens. It just doesn't make sense. And there is no point, artistically and financially. No kid would rather see this because they are aliens, not mutants. None. Fuck....

Wouldn't a movie about teenage mutant ninja turtles being from space just NOT make any sense? And I do realize that we're talking about anthropomorphic animals that speak and fight and stuff and that yes there are things in life more important, BUT it's 4am and what do I care, if they are from space then they couldn't be turtles to start with, no? They very most likely wouldn't have any knowledge of earth's martial arts too... Guess they could be teenagers, but that's about it. SO, the movie

SO, the movie should be called something like Teenage Alien Fighters From Space.

Maybe Bay could look into Biker Mice From Mars instead...

I get what he's saying. He makes a point. He shows clear disappointment with the creative direction people are going with the Turtles, while at the same time pointing out the hypocrisy of the fanbase (aliens, bad idea, fifth turtle, awesome, especially if it were named Picasso). However, I don't think there is a single person who isn't aware of Michael Bay and what he does. Transformers is one thing. But now TMNT? The franchise will end up being worse than the third film. What they need to do

What they need to do is stop messing with the origin story and stick to telling the darker, deeper story started by the CGI film. We need more tales about these turtles and Splinter as a family and less about cheesy one liners, comedic turns, and faux martial arts fights.

Did Anyone Read The Actual Blog?

Peter Laird hates this idea. This was obviously a sarcastic response to a terrible idea. I can't believe how many post I read below that think he is endorsing this idiotic idea. Even Entertainment Weekly has an article stating he endorsed when he clearly doesn't. All you have to do is read his responses in the comments section of the blog if you need it spelled out to you. I'm surprised anyone who reads JoBlo did not see that blog post for what it really was.

Michael Bay is doing this for another investment, not for the nostalgia. He is not even a fan of the turtles, just like he wasn't a fan of Transformers. He is just starting up a new franchise so he can line his toilet paper roll with $1000 bills. He might make a fun, darker and more exciting film, but I just wish these "suits" start understanding that you can change the style, but you can't change the characters. WAKE UP BAY!

Bay had some left over alien crash landing footage from Transformers 1 and figured, "what the hell, might as well save a few bucks." Haha. I'm kidding. He would never try to save a few bucks. His Platinum Dunes remake of 'Clerks' will cost 180 million.

Platinum Dunes will do a great job since they've done so well with their other remakes... Not.

I'll get started on my "Down with Alien Turtles" protest banner.

I have another great idea for the Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles! Put in Krang as a human, make Dimension X the name of his evil Company and name "Technodrome" his headquarter building!

PS: Is Splinter also supposed to be an Alien Rat!? Cool, but please give him a motorcycle because I always wanted to see a live action Biker Mice from Mars movie and this way we can have 2 in 1!

Sigh...

Loving The Turtle Support!

Im not sure how to take this article, the blog clearly indicates his distaste for this alien idea. This article puts a different spin on it. Not sure why Niki wouldn't post Peters comments from the blog.

In any case, TMNT should defiantly not be Aliens, and Bay should go home, lay down, get real comfortable, take one of those chill pills and fuck himself

How sad it is to see a huge part of not only my childhood but that of many others just completely ripped to shreds. The biggest question here is WHY??? How does changing the origin so drastically improve the story? It's absolutely ludicrous.

You'd think, seeing as how they're all interested in making the big bucks, they would focus on the best ideas for doing so. How about taking the original source material (the comics), maintaining their gritty nature and starting with, say the first

If done right, it could be epic. We're all going to be in our 70s by the time someone makes a legitimate TMNT film.

who cares

If I was still a child I would give a shit.

Bay hasn't made a good movie in years... Even if he wasn't going to make the turtles aliens or drag queens or whatever the hell he wants to do he'd still f*ck it up royally... why anyone expects anything even remotely decent regardless of the plot is beyond me.

Screw Bay and screw this guy. Who cares if he is the co-creator? History has shown that the creator of a franchise can fuck it up just as bad as (or even far more worse than) anyone else can. Case in point - George Lucas.

There's your first mistake, Lucas controlled it all along and steered it into shitty territory. If, anything, Lucas would benefit from letting other people play in his sandbox. 'This guy', Peter Laird, simply made a mistake thinking people would care about TMNT 20 years later.

Meh, we'll live.

While yes, the alien thing is stupid, it's not like it's the first time TMNT will be tarnished. The aforementioned Venus for sure, but c'mon...I want somebody to honestly say that Turtles III wasn't crap. ADMIT IT!
Side note: Bebop and Rocksteady should be re-imagined as psychic human hipsters played by Vin Diesel and Channing Tatum.

As long as Michael Bay isn't directing, we will be fine. I really hope the alien thing is something just to explain what they are and how they developed, but other than that, I think it won't be a big deal. The film is going to end up as fun as the classics were.

what the hell people?

I seriously don't get all the hate. I mean I realize that people get their rocks off by hating on Bay and jumping on that bandwagon but come on, think about it. While he is a part of the project yes if anything he's just a producer on it and much more likely he's just an Executive Producer on it so come on... all I really see him doing is SUPPORTING the movie he's attached to, telling people to give it a chance. Sure people are upset with the change ok, but where did it ever state that it was

Sure people are upset with the change ok, but where did it ever state that it was HIS idea? Like I said he's probably just an Exec Producer, so while some of the hate can be directed to him, you would think that people would be smart enough to realize that the guys who came up with this outer-space idea are probably the ones who actually wrote the script, or how about the director, etc. there are tons of people to blame before and more than Bay, but I guess he's the big name so attack! I mean generally people loved Super 8... but who did they credit for making it good, the director and the writers... or the Executive Producer Steven Spielberg?

The ooze that turns them into the TMNT actually comes from an alien base so I dont understand what the big deal is by just making them come from space.
